SEALING RIM FOR KITCHEN SINKS Budd H. Ross, Tillamook, and'Alfred C. Jensen, Portland, Oreg.
Application February 6, 1952, Serial No. 270,156
5 Claims.
This invention relates generally to the laying of linoleum and particularly to a sealing strip to be placed around a sink recessed into a linoleum covered surface.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved form of sealing strip which will be efiective in sealing the joint between the sink and the linoleum and which can be applied in a frac-- tion of the time ordinarily required for such operations.
The second objejct is to so construct the rim that it will be easy to manufacture and in which there are no parts which may be easily rendered inoperative by severe usage.
A further object is to avoid the use of slow operating screws for clamping and also to avoid the necessity of bending stresses in the clamping parts or in the rim itself.
We accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a perspective view of a sink mounted on a drainboard with the rim in place.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section taken along the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a section of the rim.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken along the line 44 in Fig. 2.
Like numbers of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown a common form of table top I with a supporting apron II. with linoleum or other material I2, the front edge having a decorative trim I3. A sink I4 is to be mounted in the top I0 within an opening I5 provided therefor, there being a space I6 between the sides of the opening I5 and the outer edge I! of the sink I 4.
Referring particularly to our invention, it consists of a T-shaped rim I8 having the vertical tongue I9 and a somewhat sloping convex bead 20, whose narrower edge 2I rests upon the linoleum I2 while its longer edge 22 rests upon the top surface of the sink I4.
The tongue I9 is provided with groups of holes 23, the holes in each group being spaced differently from the edge 24 of the tongue I9. At each group of holes 23 is disposed a clamping disk 25, whose knurled edge 26 engages the under edge of the sink rim 21. Each disk 25 is provided with an eccentric shaft 28 which can pass freely into any of the holes 23 which happen The table I0 is covered to be below the lower side 29 of the table top Ill. The disk 25 is provided with a plurality of radial holes 30 into which may be inserted an operating pin 3|.
In the operation of the device it is only necessary to position the sink in place within the opening I5 and insert the rim I8 with its tongue I9 foremost into: the space IS. The clamping disks 25 are then put into place with their pins 28 in the hole 23 nearest the under side 29 of the top I0. Pins 3| are inserted into the holes 39 and the clamping disks 25 revolved to force the sink rim 21 against the longer edge 22 of the rim I8 and drawing the edge 2I of the rim I8 down upon the linoleum I2.
In actual practice, the final portion of the tightening should be gradual. It can be seen from the foregoing that the tongue I9 has no bending stresses whatsoever but supports the sink I4 by direct downpull. When the installation is complete, the pins 3| are removed as they are of no further use.
We are aware that numerous forms of bead mounting devices have been constructed in the past. It is, therefore, not our intention to cover such devices broadly, but we do intend to cover all such forms and modifications of the device as fall fairly within the appended claims.
We claim:
l. A rim for sealing kitchen sinks comprising a rectangular band of T-shaped cross section having a vertical tongue adapted to be inserted into the space between a kitchen sink and the opening provided therefor, the lower portion of said tongue having a hole therein, an eccentric clamping disk having a shaft extending loosely through said hole and means for rotating said disk.
2. A sealing bead for kitchen sinks comprising a rectangular tongue of T-shaped cross section, the upright portion of the T being vertical and the head portion of the T extending on both sides thereof, the lower portion of said tongue having holes formed therein, eccentric disks each of which has a shaft journalling in one of said holes and a pin removably mounted in said disks for imparting rotation thereto.
3. The rim as described in claim 2 characterized by having the rim of said disk knurled and the side of said disk adjacent to said tongue in engagement therewith.
4. A sealing band for kitchen sinks comprising a vertical tongue extending around the periphery of a sink and below the bottom of the surface on which it is mounted, the upper edge of said tongue having a sloping T head, the higher portion of which rests upon a supporting table structure and the lower portion of which rests upon the sink, and an eccentric clamp between the under side of the sink flange and the lower edge of the tongue.
5. The combination of a T-shaped rim with an eccentric clamping disk journalling along the lower edge of the main stem of the T, said clamping diskhaving a knurled exterior and having pin holes formed in the knurled surface, and an operating pin insertable in said pin hole for imparting limited rotation to said disk.
