Description
Aug. 18, 1953 J. T. CROWDER 2,648,847
NOVELTY CAP Filed May 10 1951 H INVENTOR.
Patented Aug. 18, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to caps, more particularly to a novelty type cap for children.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a cap, normal in outward appearance, but having a visor portion which may be raised to disclose an entertaining and unique design.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cap embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the cap shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front view illustrating a difierent aspect of the cap shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a partial front view further illustrating the cap.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a section taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the figures, it will be seen that the cap is a conventional type cap having a head piece I and a visor II. The cap may be constructed of suitable cloth, plastic or other material. The visor preferably contains some stifiening material such as paper board or the like so that it will hold its form either in the vertical position shown in the figures or in the normal extended position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The novel feature of the cap is that the underside of the visor is impressed with a drawing such as a human face of comical appearance, so that when the visor I I of the cap is raised, this face will appear. In addition, over the eyes of the face are disposed movable eyelids [2 which may be formed of any type of flexible material, such as cloth. The eyelids I2 are rendered movable by being attached to a suitably shaped shaft I3 which is journaled in a pair of brackets [4 which in turn are secured to the visor II. The shaft l3 and the brackets M are made sufficiently close fitting that the friction between the two will maintain the shaft [3 in any desired position. A knob I is provided to adjust the position of the shaft. Thus, the user by lifting the visor portion H of the cap may present the unique and entertaining face appearing on the visor and wink the eyes of the face by adjusting the knobs l5.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the eyelids [2 for each eye are made independently adjustable. If desired, a simpler construction may be employed wherein but a single shaft I3 is employed to which both eyelids l2 are attached so that the eyelids will move in unison.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a cap of the type having a head piece and a visor adapted to assume an extended or an upright position, the combination with said visor of: a face including eyes, nose, and mouth, impressed upon the underside of said visor whereby when the said visor is placed in the upright position the said face becomes apparent, brackets attached to the underside of said visor above the eyes of said face, a rotatable shaft journaled in said brackets and an eyelid attached to said shaft between said brackets.
2. In a cap of the type having a head piece and a visor adapted to assume an extended or an upright position, the combination with said visor of: a face impressed upon the underside of said visor whereby when the said visor is placed in the upright position the said face becomes apparent, two eyes included in said face, moveable eyelids, pivotal means attached to said eyelids, cooperating means attached to the underside of said visor and carrying said pivotal means, said pivotal means being adapted to raise and lower said eyelids.
' JOHN T. CROWDER.
