Application March 15, 1951, Serial N 0. 215,673
This invention relates to improvements in upholstered seat structure.
Themain objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an upholstered seat structure which is well adapted for office and store chairs, stools and the like, which is simple and economical in its parts, has a finished. attractive appearance and permits a wide selection of covering, both in the original upholstery and for recovering as occasion may require or render desirable.
Second, to provide an upholstered seat structure in which the upholstery may be applied by unskilled workmen and with the aid of simple tools or appliances.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which may be very economically produced and at the same time is very durable.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the inventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which:
Fig. l is a fragmentary elevational view partially in section on a line corresponding to the broken line l-l in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary inverted view of the seat removed from the pedestal.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view partially in section.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view mainly in section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the upholstery clamping members disassembled.
'The base plate 3 is provided with a "pair of spaced parallel ribs 66 to which the upwardly facing U-shaped bars 1 are fixedly secured as by spot welding at 8. Attaching bolts 9 are 9 Claims. (01. 155-180) secured to these reinforced ribs 6, these being adapted to receive the arms of the supporting bracket 2 which are secured on bolts by means of the nuts Ill. The base plate 3 has parallel reinforcing ribs ll disposed transversely of the ribs 6. It is also provided with radial ribs I2 radiating from the o t a c; annular rib is. This permits the base plate being formed of relatively light sheet metal stock but is rigid in all directions and capable of carrying heavy loads. Air vent holes I4 are provided. The upholstery in the embodiment illustrated comprises a rubber cushion 15 disposed on the base plate, an adhesive I6 being preferably applied over the base and around the flanges thereof. The upholstery cover I! is provided with a skirt portion I8 surrounding the edge of the cushion and folded inwardly around the lower edge of the rim against the inner side thereof and lapped upon the underside of the base. The upholstery is clamped. in position by means of the U-shaped clamping members l9 and 20. The clamping member I9 is of U shape, the arms 2| thereof being springable and provided with inwardly ofiset end portions 22 terminating in lugs 23 engaged with holes 24 in the clamping strip 20.
With the upholstery draped or folded around the rim, the clamping members are inserted into clamping engagement with the inturned part of the upholstery as is illustrated in the drawings, and the arms of the U-shaped member spring to engage in the holes of the member 20. Desirably the clamping members are of such width that they lie above the inturned flange 5 and snubbingly engage the upholstery covering between the lower edges of the clamping member and the flange and between the upper edges of the clamping member and the base plate. To further secure the clamping members, the base plate is provided with bendable tongues 25 which are folded downwardly into retaining engagement with the clamping members. This provides means for very securely retaining the upholstery while enabling the assembly thereof by relatively inexperienced workmen and permitting the assembly of the upholstery by a dealer to meet the requirements of a particular customer, or to permit reupholstery and recovering as occasion may require.
I have illustratedand described a highly practical embodiment ofmy invention. I have not attempted to illustrate. or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an upholstered seat structure, the combination of a metal base plate having a downturned rim terminating at its lower edge in an inwardly directed flange, an upholstery covering embracing said rim and folded upwardly around the said rim flange and against the inner side thereof and lapping upon the underside of the base plate, a U-shaped upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim upon the upturned upholstery covering and having springable arms, said arms being ofiset inwardly at their ends and terminating in lugs, and a second upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim in opposed relation to said U-shaped clamping member and having holes therein with which the lugs of said springable arms are retainingly engaged, said clamping members being of such width as to snubbingly engage the upholstery covering between the inner side of the rim flange and the base plate, said base plate having bendable tongues engaging the inner sides of said clamping members.
2. In an upholstered seat structure, the combination of a metal base plate having a downturned rim, an upholstery covering embracing said rim said rim in opposed relation to said U-shaped clamping member and having holes therein with. which the lugs of said springable arms are retainingly engaged, said base plate having bendable tongues engaging the inner sides of said clamping members,
3.- In an upholstered seat structurethe combination of a metal base plate having a downturned rim terminating at its lower edge in an inwardly directed flange, an upholstery covering embracing said rim and folded upwardly around the said rim flange and against the inner side thereof and lapping upon the underside of the base plate, a U-shaped upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim upon the upturned upholstery covering and having springable arms, said arms being offset inwardly at their ends and terminating in lugs, and a second upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim in opposed relation to said U-shaped clamping member and having holes therein with which the lugs of said springable arms are retainingly engaged, said clamping members being of such width as to snubbingly engage the upholstery covering between the inner side of the rim flange and the base plate.
4. In an upholstered seat structure, the combination of a metal base plate having a downturned rim, an upholstery covering embracing said rim and folded upwardly around and against the inner side thereof, a U-shaped upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim upon the upturned upholstery covering and having springable arms, said arms being ofifset inwardly at their ends and terminating in lugs, and aseconcl upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim in opposed relation to said U-shaped clamping member and having holes therein with which the lugs of said springable arms are retainingly engaged.
5. In a seat structure, the combination of a base plate having a downturned rim terminating at its lower edge in an inwardly directed flange, a U-shaped upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim and having springable arms, said arms being offset inwardly at their ends and terminating in lugs, and a second upholstery clamping member disposed within said rim in opposed relation to said U-shaped clamping member and having holes therein with which the lugs of said springable arms are retainingly engaged, said base plate having bendable tongues engaging the inner sides of said clamping members.
