BUTTON FASTENING. No. 253,636. Patented Feb. 14,1882;
WITNESSES. nwrcivron mm wwmmm. ;N%\ 33 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR., OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE HEATON BUTTON FASTENER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 253,636, dated February 14, 1882.
7 Application filed December 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH,
J r., a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in 10 the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. My invention relates to improvements in that class of button-fastenings which provide a retaining base or plate, and curved or hooked jaws for holding the eye or shank of a button and attaching the same to wearing-apparel; and it consists of a metallic plate provided with side wings or projections having a terminal shoulder or spur at their extreme ends facing toward each other, so that when the wings are bent upward and over the plate in a curved shape these spurs interlock within the curved portion of said wings to provide a more efficient and stronger fastening than those heretofore employed for the same purpose.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved fastener connected to'the shank of a button; Fig. 2, an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the blank from which the complete fastener is formed.
Similarletters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
The blank A, from which my complete fastener is formed, is preferably of an oval shape, and provided on each side with a projecting 4o arm or wing, B, having a shoulder or spur, a,
at their extreme outer ends and facing toward each other, as fully shown in the drawings. These Wings or projections B are bent upwardly at right angles to the plate and over 4 5 the same in a curved manner, the inside edges of the same resting against each other, and
the shoulder or spur aof each wing projecting into the curved portion of its opposite wing, as fully shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The button is attached to my improved faststraight, or in such a manner as to release the shank of the button.
The device is readily attached to any article of wearing-apparel by pushing the curved wings or arms up through an opening in the fabric, the plate A resting upon the under surface of the same, and the wings or arms connected to the shank of. the button in amanner already described.
I am aware that a fastener formed of a plate provided with curved side wings which are adapted to be bent up laterally together to receive and hold the shank of a button is not 7 new with me, nor do I desire to claim such a construction, broadly; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the plate A, provided with the curved arms or wings B,' having spurs a, adapted to interlock within the said wings or arms, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 8
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN AUGUSTUS SMITH, JR.
