Description
O 10, 1950 E. e. BROWNAWELL 2,525,091
' I GRAVE MARKER AND BASE Filed May 25,. 1948 v INVENTOR.
12 12. i ZH VJWZZZ Patented Oct. 10, 1950 GRAVE MARKER AND BASE Edgar G. Brownawell, Gary, Ind.
Application May 25, 1948, Serial No. 28,983
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to grave markers.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a grave marker which is made of light material and can be easily transported and handled and which will have the appearance of a heavy stone and wherein the assembly is made of parts,
one of which forms a bas and adapted to contain cement and the other of which forms the top tion with the accompanyin drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the top part of the marker.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the bottom of the top part of the marker and looking into the interior thereof and on the bottom and in full perspective upon the base of the marker, and the parts being collected but spaced from one another.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, in elevation, of the marker.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the base.
Referring now to the figures, it represents a base formed of metal, preferably stainless steel which will not readily corrode, and having a top III with elongated hole [2 therein throughwhich a hand may be extended and bolt holes it. In the sides and ends of the base 10 are openings i-t and i5 through which cement it ma be poured to fill the base;
Adapted to rest on the top of the base is a, top part ll likewise made of metal or stainless steel and which has a bottom 18 with a hand opening it thereon and bolt holes 2|.
Before the cement i6 is poured into base Hi, the base part and the top part are assembled and fixed together by bolts 22 and nuts 23. The bottom of the base i0 is opened and hands can be extended through the same and through the hand holes 12 and I9 to extend the bolts 22 through the bolt holes in the bottom of the top part and in the top of the base. The nuts 23 are tightened thereon and the top part ll, becomes rigid with the base.
Thereafter, a bottom 25 may be welded as indicated at 26 to close the base so that it may receive the cement It. The cement It will be poured through the openings l4 and I5 and as soon as the same has dried, these openings can be closed with a plug as indicated at 21. The marker then may be set in the ground and the cement it will serve as ballast to hold the-marker upright. The marker may be surrounded if necessary with cement.
The top part i'l may be of any desired shape or configuration. In the present form, one face has a depression therein indicated at 21 in which is fixed a name plate 23.
Preferably the bottom, as indicated in Fig. 4 at St, is removable from grooves in the side walls of the base so that the base need not be welded at the place where the marker is to be installed. By having the bottom is! removable, the top part can be assembled upon the base it and thereafter the base put in place and the cement poured into the base. Accordingly, the assembly Will not have to be made until parts are located at the place of installation. The base thus will not have to be connected by welding. I
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
A grave marker comprising a hollow boxshaped base member having a top portion with a hand opening therein and with bolt holes spaced from the hand opening, but accessible therefrom,
a hollow box-shaped top member having closed top and side portions and a bottom portion with a hand opening therein and with bolt holes spaced therefrom but accessible from the hand opening, said hollow top member bearing external indicia on one of its side portions, said hollow base member having a bottom which is removable to permit access through the base member to the hand openings in the base member and in the top member whereby the bolt holes of the respective members can be reached through the base member and without need for access through the top and side portions of the top member, bolt means extended through the bolt holes of the top and base members to secure the members together, said base member havin a side portion with an opening therein and through which ballast material can be passed when the bottom of the base member is in place, and ballast material within the base member and lying on the base member bottom.
