Particular objects of the invention areto'provide a wrapper construction which can be readily opened to expose contents of the package.

More especially it is a purposeof the invention to enablethe entire top portion'ofa"package to be removed in a simple, duickfitearing action which will expose the entire 'endportion of the contained articles and willleave the remainder of the article fully covered and protected.

Special objects of the invention are tpjas'sure the wrapper tearin'g'cleanl yjand smoothly and without varying from a predetermined line of severance.

Important objects of the invention are to accomplish all these and other desirable results without having to resort to tearing threads, cords, strips or the like and, in fact, without adding any extra parts of any character.

Other special objects of the invention are to provide a wrapper with a readily removable upper section without destroying or impairing the sealing and confining characteristics of the wrapper.

Further special objects of the invention are to obtain the results indicated without adding to the cost and without complicating the manufacture of the wrapper or the application of the wrapper to the article.

Other desirable objects and the novel features through which the various purposes of the invention are attained are set forth or will appear in the course of the following specification.

The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates certain present preferred embodiments of the invention. Structure, however, may be modified and changed in certain respects, all within the true intent and broad scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.

Fig. 1 in the drawing is a perspective view of the wrapper applied to a candy bar or the like;

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the top section removed;

Fig. 3 is an edge view and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the formed blank for the wrapper;

Fig. 5 is a broken perspective detail showing the wrapper applied to a difierent, fiat shape of package and the top section partly torn away;

Fig. 6 is a plan view illustrating a modified form of the blank.

The invention resides in forming a wrapper such as represented at 1, with an outward embody of the candy bar or other edible material'l'l. To facilitate starting the separation of the wrapper on this line of cleavage, there'is provided in the illustrationa small tab t2 projecting from the outermost,---starting edge, I3 of the wrapper and joined to the body of the wrapper by 'an edge It aligned with or leading inwardly into alignment with line o f severance 8.

In practice the "severance line B' iiiay be "termed by scoring, creasing, foldiii" or bossing the inner surface of the wrapper outwardly to "form at the inside a groove andattheoutsideanoutwardly extended, sharply pointed ridge, as shown in somewhat exaggerated form at 8 in the edge view, Fig. 3.

Then, when the wrapper is secured in the enclosing package constituting form shown in Figs. 1 and 5, there will be a line of incipient weakness extending entirely about the upper end of the package, which can be instantly and easily started by grasping and lifting the tab [2 with the fingers of one hand, while holding the outer edge 13 of the wrapper at approximately the point indicated at I5 in Fig. 1, with the thumb or other finger of the other hand.

The angularly projecting edge I of the tab leads the strain directly inward to the start of the angled ridge 8 which, being weakened or at least sharply defined by the scoring or embossment, gives way and guides and confines the severance to this particular line surrounding the package.

Thus, without the addition of a severing thread, tape or other applied element, the wrapper material will give way and cut, tear or sever along the line of the outwardly inclined, sharp, scored or embossed ridge 8.

The removal of the upper section fully exposes the whole upper end of the contained artiole, leaving the body of the latter entirely enclosed and protected within the main, lower section of the wrapper, as indicated in Fig. 2. The upper edge, as shown in this View, is sharply and cleanly out without jagged or broken edges such as might interfere with the consumption. or use of the projecting, exposed portion of the article.

The invention may be applied to single, double or multiple layers of wrapper.

In the example a. double layer wrapper has been indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. These may be,

the creasedyscored or weaken ed for example, an inner layer 16 of metal foil and an outer, protective layer ll of paper or the like.

The scoring or embossment of the inside of the wrapper may be effected before or after cutting the wrapper to the required size and shape, and by any suitable means such as a scoring roller or knife, folding blade or the like.

To avoid waste, the Wrapper material may be slit in strips of the required width, with the finger tab extensions l2 of one strip cut out of the edges of the adjoining strips, leaving these strips with notches l8 in one edge where material for the finger tabs has been removed for the adjoining strips. This construction is of further advantage in the severance of the top sections 9, enabling these sections to be torn away more quickly since the line of tear is reduced by the amount of extension of the finger tabs [2.

The finger tabs may be left projecting free and clear from the outer edges of the completed wrappers or be tacked down by adhesive or the like, which will yield readily to the pull of the fingers.

The invention adds no bulk to the package and no expense other than what may be the slight cost of effecting the embossment and the provision of the tearing tab. The latter provides also an indicator showing how the package is to be opened.

By conforming in a general way to the accepted practice, the wrapper may be folded and secured in the usual way and with conventional machinery and be sealed by adhesive, wax or in any other suitable way.

What is claimed is:

A package comprising a confection and a wrapper enclosing said confection, said wrapper comprising a substantially rectangular sheet of readily tearable material, said wrapper being scored on the inner face in the form of a sharply angled, outwardly extended groove appearing on the outer face of the wrapper as an outwardly embossed, sharply pointed ridge extending entirely across the face of the wrapper from one side edge to the opposite side edge and defining a readily removable end section of the wrapper which will extend completely around a package to which said wrapper may be applied, and a finger tab projecting transversely from one side edge of said removable end section of the wrapper, said finger tab having a straight edge which is innermost from the end edge of the removable end section in line with and constituting an extension of said scored portion of the'wrapper and forming a projecting grip by which said removable end section may be torn off along said score line.
