Description
J- BALMER Feb. 19, 1952 NIGGERHEAD Filed Aug. 24, 1949 John Ba/mer IN VEN TOR.
Patented Feb. 19, 1952 UNITED STATES NIGGERHEAD J'ohnBa'lmer, St. Louis, Mo.
Application August 24, 1949, SerialNo. 112,127
3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet markers for printing presses, especially, although not necessarily, flatbed rotary cylinder presses.
As: is .well known, the: sheet is fed in such presses to guides including right and left side edge guides on the press which are used selectivelyfor properly positioning the work over the printing form for. printing, and unless the work is being fed properly relative to the side edge guide being used, much damage, loss of time, labor and money may occur if the situation is not promptly corrected.
With the foregoing in mind, the primary object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive sheet marker adapted to be easily and quickly locked in the printing form to mark during prin ting, the side edge of the sheet on the same side as the side edge guide so as to indicate that the sheet is being properly fed relative to the guide.
Another object is to provide a marker of the character and for the purpose of above said forth which may be used to mark the work so as to identify the particular pressman responsible for proper operation of the press, for checking purposes.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating my improved sheet marker locked in the form of a fiat bed printing press;
Figure 2 is a View in perspective of the side edge marker detached and drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 3 is a view in longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 and drawn to a still larger scale; and,
Figure 4 is a view in plan of the sheet marker illustrating by the full and broken lines the different set angular positions of the marker bar.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the marker of my invention comprises a right angled attaching bracket plate I providing when attached, a vertical leg 2 and. a horizontal leg 3.
An elongated rectangular marker bar 4 longer than the horizontal leg 3 and lying flat on top of said leg is pivotally and slidably secured thereon by means of a screw 5 threaded into said leg 3. in the longitudinal center of the bracket plate I and passing through a longitudinal slot 6 in said bar 4.
A series of screw holes I in the horizontal leg 3 spaced apart laterally thereof at one side of the screw '5, and a set screw 8 in the slot 6 for turning into said holes I selectively provide for pivotally adjusting the marker bar 4 into different set angular positions around the screw 5, for a purpose presently seen. In one of said positions thereof, the marker bar 4 is longitudinally aligned with the horizontal leg 3, which is to say the bracketplate I.
Apair of front corner, marker lugs, 9, III are provided on top of the marker bar 4 for the purpose presently explained.
In using the described sheet marker, it is locked in the printing chase II of the printing form I2 by interposing the vertical leg 2, in locked position between one side of the chase I I and one of the slugs I3 comprising part of the usual furniture in the chase and with the horizontal leg extending outwardly of the chase I I and marker bar d extending inwardly under the edge of the sheet, not shown. In this connection, it is explained that the marker bar 4, with the exception presently noted, is longitudinally aligned with the attaching bracket plate I, the horizontal leg 3 is adapted to rest on the chase I I to dispose said marker lugs 9, I0 type high so that the marker lugs 9, III will be inked with the type I4, and said marker bar 4 is adapted to be slidably adjusted on said leg 3 to print on the edge of the sheet in the exact position of the side edge guide, not shown, relative to said sheet, if the sheet is properly positioned relative to said edge guide.
/ In certain form set ups, the described marker cannot belocked in the form I2 with the marker bar 4 aligned with the attaching bracket plate I and to bring the marker lugs 9, III into the position relative to the edge of the sheet described in the above. Under such conditions, the marker bar 4 may be set into opposite angular positions, for instance as shown in Figure 4, as occasion may require to properly position the marker lugs 9, I0.
As will be obvious, if, with the described marker properly positioned, the edge of the sheet is not marked it will be manifest that the sheet has not been fed in proper relation to the side edge guide so that the situation may be rectified before damage is done. Also, this may indicate other adverse conditions in the press, for instance sticking of the sheet, loose quoins in the form, sheets being crowded and the like. Also, under certain conditions, the edge of the sheet may be marked too far inwardly if said sheet is not being fed in proper relation to the edge guide and such marking will indicate those conditions.
A particular feature of my invention is that the marker lugs 9, ill may be differently characterized, as shown, or bear type initials, or the like, not shown, to identify the pressman responsible for proper operation of the press, and for the purpose previously set forth.
When the sheet is marked, the marks can be used in stacking sheets in vertical alignment.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A sheet marker for use in a printing form of a printing press having a guide for one edge of a sheet being printed on the form, said marker comprising a marker bar having marking means thereon, a mounting for said bar locked in the form and supporting said bar at said edge of the sheet with the marking means type high for inking and printing with said form, said bar being pivotally and slidably supported on said mounting for adjustment transversely and longitudinally of said edge of the sheet to position said marking means for printing at a predetermined distance from said edge of the sheet when said sheet and edge guide are in proper relation during printing.
2. A sheet marker according to claim 1 wherein said mounting comprises a right angled bracket having a vertical leg locked in said form and a horizontal leg on which said bar is pivotally and slidably supported, said horizontal le engaging the form to position said marking means type high.
3. A sheet marker according to claim 1 wherein said marking means comprises a pair of differently characterized corner lugs on one end of said bar for marking the sheet to identify the person responsible for operation of the press.
