My present invention relates to shaving apparatus and particularly to safety razors of the type having a frame with a blade-receiving head equipped with a guard disposed in front of the blade.

The particular object of this invention is the provision of a razor of the safety type having a guard bar that is curved slightly away from the blade in the generally central portion of the razor. This provides a smoother shave inasmuch as the curved section of the guard bar follows more nearly the contour of the face. Another object of this invention is the provision of a safety razor having a curved guard which, at its end portions is unattached to the razor head;

a further object is the provision of a curved guard in which the end portions are brought closely adjacent the ends of the blade; and such additional objects, advantages, and capabilities as will hereafter appear and as are inherent in the construction disclosed herein. My invention further resides in the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and, while I have shown therein what is now regarded as the preferred embodiment of this invention, I desire the same to be understood as illustrative only and not to be interpreted in a limiting sense.

In the drawings annexed hereto and forming a part hereof,

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the upper or head portion of a safety razor in which the principles of the present invention have been incorporated;

Fig. 2 is a front view of the razor shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the razor shown in Fig. 1.

Reference will now be made in greater detail to the annexed drawings for a more complete description of this invention. In Fig. 1, the frame of the razor is indicated by the numeral l and includes a handle 2 and a head 3, the latter having a base 4 over which a cover 5 is swingable for the purpose of clamping a blade 6 between the base 4 and the cover 5, with the cutting edge I of the blade 6 extending just beyond the adjacent edge of the cover.

According to the present invention, I provide a guard bar 8 which is curved at its central portion away from the plane of the blade 6, as indicated at 9 in Fig. 2, but the end portions ll of the bar are curved toward the plane of the blade 6 until the extremities of the bar liesubstantially in the plane of the blade. The bar 9 is connected supportingly with the base 4 by a pair of spaced-apart lugs 12, and the ends of the bar 8 clear the end posts M of the head, which normally receive the front corners of the blade 6 so as to properly position the blade in the head. The space between the ends of the guard bar 8 and the posts or stops [4 of the head is indicated at [6.

In operation, the razor is drawn over the face with the guard bar 8 thereof held against the skin of the face. The inwardly curved portions ll of the guard bar prevent the end portions of the blade from cutting too closely against the skin while the central outwardly curved portion 9 of the guard bar permits the blade to shave the skin between the ends of the guard bar closely, yet smoothly, and without danger of cutting the skin.

While I have shown a style of razor provided with two lugs l2 between the ends of the razor blade, it will of course be understood that this is merely illustrative of the invention and is not to be construed in a limiting sense. Also, the guard bar 8, while shown as disconnected at its ends from the posts l4, may be made integral therewith. This invention may be applied to any type or kind of razor, either single or double edge, or electric. Further, it is of course understood that the specific description of structure set forth above may be departed from without departing from the spirit of this invention as disclosed herein and as defined in the appended claims.

Having now described my invention, I claim:

1. In a razor having a straight blade and a support therefor so as to hold the blade in position, a guard bar carried by said support adjacent the cutting edge of the blade and having its central part bent so as to lie farther away from the edge of the blade at the central portion thereof than at the end portions of the blade.

2. In a razor having a straight blade and a support for the blade so as to hold the latter in position, a guard bar adapted to be carried by said support and comprising a curved member adapted to be arranged with its central portion curved away from the general plane of the blade and with its end portions curved toward said plane so asto lie substantially in said plane.
