Application August 11, 1947, Serial No. 767,866
3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful irnprovements in mittens and more particularly to wash mittens.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a mitten constructed from a single sheet of material and so designed as to provide folds of multiple layers one of which forms a soap pocket.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a wash mitten including an elastic band that engages a Wrist for holding the mitten in a convenient position to the users hand.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a Wash mitten that is extremely strong and durable in use.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a wash mitten that is simple and practical in construction, efficient and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, `wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the present Wash mitten;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a plan View of the blank forming the present mitten.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral lll represents a substantially rectangular sheet of absorbent material such as terry cloth, cotton, chamois or the like.
This material is first folded upon itself along parallel transverse fold lines I2 and I4 to provide multiple layers of material or tucks I6, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. Having thus been folded to form the multiple layers, the material is then folded upon itself along longitudinal medial line I8 to provide a palm section 20 and a back section 22 of the mitten 24. The free side edges 26 and forward free edges 28 of the material are then secured to each other by stitching or the like to provide a hand stall 30.
` It should be noted, that at least one of said folds is provided with an open edge to form a soap pocket 32.
A long slit 34 is provided adjacent each free side edge of the material to form a front side 36 and rear side 38 of a thumb stall 40 having their edges secured to each other.
To retain the mitten in position to a hand inserted therein, there is provided an elastic band 42 secured to the rear face of the material adjacent the inner end thereof.
Also, a suitable tab or tag 44 is secured to the mitten adjacent its free end to receive suitable indicia such as the users name whereby the mitten will not be accidentally lost or be used by others than for Whom it is intended.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction With the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device Will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however. that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A wash mitten comprising an elongated sheet of material folded upon itself along parallel transverse fold lines to provide multiple layers of material forming a pocket, said material being folded along a longitudinal line upon itself to provide a palm section and a back section, said material having free forward edges and free side edges, and means securing the free side edges of said material together and the free forward edges of said material together.
2. The combination of claim 1 and a longitudinal slit provided in said palm section and said back section adjacent the free side edges thereof to provide a pair of thumb stall forming elements, and means securing the edges of said thumb stall forming elements together.
3. A wash mitten formed from a single sheet of material and including elongated palm and back sections, each of said sections having a free longitudinal side edge and rear and forward transverse end edges, said sections being folded transversely upon themselves along parallel transverse fold lines to provide multiple layers of material, means securing the free side edges of said sections together and the forward free end edges of said sections together, longitudinal slits provided in said sections to provide a pair of thumb stall "forming elements.1means securing the edges of saidthumb stall forming elements l5 Number together, and an elastic band carried by said sections adjacent the rear end edges thereof.
