1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to electrical transformers, and has particular reference to a secondary winding for a transformer and the method of making it.
An object of the invention is to provide a secondary winding for a transformer which has at least two complete turns but is formed of a one piece casting.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two turn secondary winding for a transformer which is economical to manufacture because of the time, labor, and machine work saved in its fabrication.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two turn secondary winding for a transformer, which is constructed and arranged so that the primary winding may be substantially enclosed by it.
Another object of the invention is to provide a unitary secondary winding of more than one turn, which is provided with inbuilt cooling elements.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawings forming part of the within disclosure, in which drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device, with parts broken away, embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the device illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be understood that in the embodiment herein disclosed, the invention comprises a unitary casting of copper, or other electrically conductive material. The casting is formed with comparatively thick walls I defining a hollow rectangle having a rectangular opening 8. The walls I have outward extensions 9 and H], which form a comparatively deep peripheral channel about the casting.
The casting is also formed with comparatively thick extension wall sections H and I2, which may be drilled and threaded, as at l3, to act as terminal connections.
After the unitary casting is removed from its mold it is sawed beginning at the point I4 in the upper wall and continuing along the lines [5, l6, ll, l8 and I9 and terminating at point 20 in the lower wall so that a unitary structure results having two complete turns. The casting may also be formed with water tubes 2| and 22 cast therein, or the casting may be formed with slots in which the tubes 2| and 22 may be inserted after the casing operation is completed.
A structure formed as hereinabove described provides a secondary winding for a transformer with two complete turns, which may be fabricated at a minimum of cost and with great economies in time, labor, and machining operations.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A two-turn secondary winding comprising a hollow rectangular body, the periphery of which is channel shaped in cross section, the bottom wall of the channel being comparatively thicker than the side walls and the bottom wall of the channel having a, cut therein extending along its median line from a point on said median line to a second point on said line spaced from said first point, and a cut extending outwardly from each end of said median line out, each of said last named cuts extending in an opposite direction through one of the side walls of said channel.
