PANTALEIT Filed Nov. 5, 1946 I 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 efa cob 6. 578272 Patented May 15, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFHCE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to pantalets, drawers or similar under-garments for women and children, and has as its general object the provision of a garment of the above recited character in which the crotch thereof is formed with an opening or 'slot which is fitted with the Talon or zipper type of fastener.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a construction in the crotch of pantalets which will adapt it to the practical embodiment of the conventional Talon or zipper type of fastener as a closure for a slit or opening extending through the crotch and upward at its ends on the front and back of the garment,
whereby opening and closing of the crotch of fastener of the Talon or zipper type such as to afford sufficient fullness in the crotch of the garment as to space the fastener from the crotch of the wearer and thus insure against the. fastener occasioning discomfort.
' With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention resides in the parts and in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated by way of example inthe accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a view of the garment in a flattened condition showing the front thereof,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the back of the garment,
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the side and leg portions of the garment, showing them as separated and depicting the special contour imparted to the crotch portion thereof for reception of a slide fastener,
Fig. 4 is a view elevation of one of the side and leg portions of the garment as seen from the inner side thereof, showing the formation of the crotch,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary inverted plan view of the crotch portion of the garment showing the fastener in a partially opened position,
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the garment showing the inner side of the crotch with the fastener in its closed position,
Fig. '7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the fastener in its opened position,
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the garment seen from the front and one side thereof showing it as applied, and
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the garment as seen from the rear and one side thereof showing it as applied.
Referring to the drawings more specifically A and B indicate respectively the right and left side and leg portions of the garment, each of which embodies front and. back portions It and H and i2 and I3 respectively united throughout the lengths of their outer edges as by seams l4 and i5 and united at the lower portion on their inner edges as by seams l6 and ll to form the leg portions. The front portions l9 and it are united for a portion of the lengths thereof down wardly from their upper margins by a seam I8 and the back portions II and I3. are likewise joined together for a portion of their lengths extending downwardly from their upper margins as by a seam is. The seams l8 and iii are of substantially corresponding lengths. A slit 28 is thus provided in the garment extending be tween the lower ends of the opposed seams l8 and it which leads through the crotch formed between the joined side and leg members A and B and leads upwardly on the front of the garment between the portions ID and I2 and upwardly on the back of the garment between the portions II and I3.
In carrying out the invention the inner margins 2i and 22 of the portions l8 and H and'the complementary margins 23 and 2 1 of the portions I2 and I3 extend straight in perpendicular relation to the upper margin of the garment throughout a portion of the lengths thereof, which when united form the seams l8 and Hi; the edges or margins 2! and 23 being joined to form the seam l8 and the margins 22 and 2-4 being joined to form the seam l 9. The seams l3 and [9 are thus straight and extend opposite to and in parallel relation with each other at the front and rear of the garment. The inner margins of the side and legs portions A and 13 extending between the lower ends of the seams l3 and i9 and the upper ends of the seams it and i1 and comprising the margins of the slit 2c are formed on a convex curvature as particularly shown in Fig. 3, being curved outwardly and downwardly from the margins 2i and 22 to their intersection with the upper end of the seam 16 as indicated at 25 and 26, and being curved downwardly and outwardly from the straight margins 23 and 24 to their intersection with the upper end of the seam H as indicated at 21 and 28. The opposed margins of the slit 25 thus normally extending in overlapping relation to each other throughout at least the major portion of the lengths thereof with the intermediate portions constituting the crotch of the garment protruding past and overlying each other. A
length of conventional slide fastener C of the Talon or zipper type is secured at its margins throughout the length of the convex margins 2526 and 27-28, thus'uniting the margins 2526 and margins 2l28 edge to edge when the fastener is closed. The fastener will then extend in alignment with the seams i8 and 19. When the margins of the slit are united edge to edge by the fastener the material flanking the margins will be displaced on opposite sides of the slit, being crowded outwardly and back into the side and leg portions of the garment. The inner edges of the lower portions of the side and leg portions united by the seams i i and I! to form the leg portions are of corresponding lengths and are arranged so that when the convex margins 25-29 and 27-48 of the slit are united by the fastener the upper ends of the seams; and I? will be disposed midway between the front and back of the garment and will intersect the outermost portion of the convex margins 2526 and 2l-23 whereby the crotch of the garment is formed at the juncture of the leg seams l6 and I? with the slit margins. By this arrangement the crotch portion of the garment is formed with a bulge or bag so which when the fastener is closed hangs down below the crotch of the wearer when standing with the intermediate portion of the fastener depending well below the crotch. The wall portions 3i and 32 of the bulge afford such slack in the crotch portion of the garment as to permit ready spreading of the margins of the slit 2% on opening the fastener as particularly shown in Fig. 7.
The fastener C embodies the usual lengths of tape '33 and 34 carrying interengaging teeth 35 and 36 adapted to be positioned in and out of interlocking engagement with each other by a slide 37. The fastener may be covered on either or both sides thereof as by a fiap 38 in a customary manner, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
The garment herein set forth is especially designed for use as an under-garment, but manifestly the recited crotch construction may also be applicable to an outer garment. When used as an under-garment the leg portions may be equipped with hose supporters 39.
The application and operation of the invention is apparent from the foregoing; it being manifest that when the garment is applied as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 with the fastener C closed, the slit in the crotch of the garment will be effectively closed and by the provision of the bag or bulge 30 the intermediate portion of the fastener will hang down below the crotch of the wearer when standing thus affording free bodily movement without the fastener occasioning discomfort.
While the invention has been described as applied to pantalets manifestly formed of fabric sheets connected together by seams it will be understood that the invention is also applicable to one-piece garments, since the slitted bulge 30 equipped with a slide fastener C may be embodied in such garments without departing from the invention herein set forth.
While I have shown and described a specific embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction set forth, and the invention embraces such changes, modifications and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claim.
I claim:
In a pantalet embodying an upper portion designed to encompass the portions of the body of the wearer extending from the region of the Waist to the region of the crotch of the wearer, said upper portion having a waist band constituting theupper margin thereof, a pair of leg portions integral with said upper portion and depending therefrom designed to encompass the thighs of the wearer; there being a crotch on said upper portion formed between said leg portions at the juncture of said leg portions with said upper portion; said upper portion having a front and a back and including side portions each having vertical straight front and back margins extending downward from the waist band at the center of the front and back of said upper portion and each having convex margins connecting their respective front and back margins through the crotch, unyielding seams connecting the straightfront margins of said side portions, unyielding seams connecting the straight back margins of said side portions, there being an elongated slit extending between the front and back seams defined by said convex margins, said convex margins normally extending in overlapped relation to each other, and a slide controlled toothed fastener affixed to said convex margins for detachably uniting same; said convex margins when united being designed to depend intermediate the ends thereof from the crotch of the pantalet in spaced relation to the crotch of the wearer.
