iatented Mai". '19243 The present invention relates to such hand grenades as areiprovided with asafety device cornprising a throwsafety lever for holding the striker ofthe hand grenade cocked against its spring, and a, ght'safety memberlfor holding the throw safety-lever'in safety position.
vThe chiefobject of the invention is to provide a hand grenade of' this type, in which the fight safety member'isoperable by the throwing hand.
Further ebjects `of th 'invention win be apparent froniV thefollowing description of an embodimentfthereofiHustrated by wayof example in the accompanying drawings Vin which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinalfsfection of the hand grenade -iri vsafety positiomthe section being substantially onthe line`I-I in Fig. 2.
Figs. 2- and 3V aresideand top views, respectively, of the head of the handgrenade with the safety device in'safe'ty position.`
4 is ay longitudinal `section of the hand grenade with thefght and throw safety device in the positionfoccupied at the moment when the hand grenade has just left the throwing hand'of the thrower. i
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a somewhat modied embodiment of the throw and iight safetydevice.
In the drawings, I indicates the cylinder-or body ofthe hand grenade adapted to be filled with explosive. YIn the upper part of the grenade body there is provided an opening 2, in which there is inserted a metal tube 3 the upper edge of which is bent about a flange 4 provided around the opening 2 of the grenade body. That part ofthe tube which iis situated in the opening 2 is provided with tapped threads 5 for a screwthreaded holder 6 containing the. igniter set of the handgrenade. Y l
The holder 6 is in the form of la tube which outsidev the 4grenade body I has a flange 1 which,
after the tubehas been screwed home, pressesV against a packing 8 provided on 'top of the ange 4 of the grenade body I, thereby preventing dirt, moisture andthe like from penetrating into the interior of the grenade body.
L In the tubular holder Slis mounted the `striker 9 and its spring I 0,'one end ofwhich bears on a flange I Iprovided on the upper part of the holder, and the other end of which bears on a flange I 2 provided at the lower end of the striker. Whenreleased the striker strikes a percussion cap or the like (notshownkwhich is placed at` the` top 0fa nipp1e lascrewed into the 1pwer`end or :use inserted altubeffl-sri.screwed into the nipfsrATEs PATENT jj `'Application January 21, 1946, seria1No.642,51s i' u `f j 'f In Sweden July 3, 1944 Y v uf. ple I3 and leading to a detonator On either side of the projecting outer part`V of the striker 9, there is provided on top of; the
'-iiange1 a substantially semi-circular lug I5`and,
safety position'this lever has. one arm 2I e111`I gaging in a transverse recess 23 in the projecte ing outer .part `of the striker 9. and the other arm 22 is lying against, or almost against, thegrenade body I, asshown in Fig. l. r, f' j When the thrower is about to throw the hand grenade, he shall grip the lever arm 22`and hold it securely against the grenade body I against the action of the spring IIJ. At the moment when 1 the throw has just been carried out and the 'grenade 'has thus left the throwing Vhand'of the thrower, the lever 2I, 22 will swing to the position shown in Fig. 4 in which the lever is released from its engagement with the recessed projectingA part of the striker 9, which thus is released and strikes the percussion cap (not shown) on the g top of the nipple I3. Y
All the parts described above are previously known and thus do not form part of the invention but only ofthe setting thereof. They mayV be varied in'several different manners. The Vinventi'on consists in the first place inthe provision of .a fight safety member operable by the throwing hand .and in the second place in the combi-y nation of said iight safety member with a carriage safety pin.
-In the embodiments shown by way of example in the drawings the said iight safety member, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 5, consists of a metalA wire bent to form a rectangular loop provided 4with a spring eye 24. The free ends 25, 26 ofV the loop whenplacing it onto the head ofthe 1` grenade for bringing it into its safety position,
the flange 1 of the holder 6 should project some what beyond the outsides of the lugs I5 and I6,
as shown in1Figs.2and-f3. For the purpose of preventing the free ends of:
,fthe loop from sliding upwardly from `the safety4 rit adapted to 'cause the blasting charge to explode.
tangular loop at the end thereof engaged with the throw safety lever.
3. A hand grenade of the character described, comprising, in combination, a grenade body having an opening, a head screwed into said opening and having, on top of it, two spaced approximately semi-circular projecting lugs, said lugs having double inclined surfaces thereon converging to a high point intermediate the top and bottom of said lugs, a spring-pressed striker mounted in said head and having a notched end projecting into the spaces between saidlugs, a throw safety lever pivoted on said lugs and, when in its safety position, having one end engaged with the notched end of the striker to hold the latter in cocked position against its spring and a iight safety member in the form of a resiliently expansible, .approximately rectangular wire loop swingably secured at one end thereof to said throw safety lever and which, when in its safety position, embraces the projecting lugs on the head of the grenade and holds the throw safety lever in its safety position, the other end of said ght safety member being closed and adapted to abut the said head at the side opposite from said throw safety lever, said loop being swingable about said throw safety lever out of its safety position by the thumb of the throwing hand.
4. A hand grenade as claimed in claim 3, in which a. withdrawable carriage safety pin penetrating the lugs and the projecting end of the striker is disposed immediately above the side branches of the approximately rectangular loop, 'when this is in its safety position, to lock the loop in this position.
