1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an anchor adapted to expand into the earth for holding guys of light, telephone, or other poles.
It is among the objects of my invention to provide an expanding anchor for pole guys which may be more easily installed and removed, which is more positive in its anchoring action, more lasting in wear, and more economical in construction. My invention also contemplates such other objects, advantages, and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the top blades in spread position; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the top blades; Fig. 3 is a side view of a pair of top blades; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the lower blades; Fig. 5 is a side view of the lower blades; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the scroll plate; Fig. '7 is a top plan view of the base plate; Fig. 8 is a side view of the base plate; Fig. 9 is a detailed sectional view of the scroll plate cut through the spiral to show operation of the spreading blades; Figs. 10-13 are detailed sectional views of the scroll plate showing the blades projected by quarter turns; and Fig. 14 is a detailed broken view of the anchor in position showing the manner of installing before filling in the hole.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a base H] having a rib l I extending across the upper face l2. Said rib H is substantially centrally positioned, with one portion I3 slightly to the right of center, with a recessed portion M on its left hand side, and the corresponding opposite portion [5 slightl to the left of center with a recessed portion IE on its right hand side. A pair of raised portions I1 positioned at right angles to said rib H extend from the outer edge of the face [2 of base In, but end short of rib l I, each leaving a space 18 therebetween. A pair of spaced rounded depressions IS in face [2 extend under tongues 20 of portions l3and l5 of rib II.
On face [2 between raised portions I! and depressions l9 are flat central surfaces 2! and between depressions l9 and the outer edges of face [2 are flat end portions 22.
A pair of lower blades 23 are provided. Each of said lower blades 23 has spaced outer flat end portions 24, spaced depressions 25, inner flat portions 26, and a round central portion 21, with a knob 28 adjacent its inner end. The depressions 25 extend inwardly beyond the inner ends of the outer portions of blades 23. The outer edges of the said parts of blades 23 are slightly curved to conform to the curved outer contour of base I0.
The lower blades are positioned with end portions 24 resting on end portions 22 of base If], depressions 25 within depressions l9, inner fiat portions 26 on flat surfaces 2i and raised portions 2! on raised portions l7. Depressions 25 overlap with corresponding depressions in opposite lower blades 23 with the depression of one blade on top of one side and on the bottom on the other side.
A pair of upper blades 29 are provided. Each of said upper blades 29 has spaced flat outer end portions 30, spaced raised portions 3|, spaced intermediate portions 32 and a-centl'al raised portion 33 having a knob 34 at its inner portion and a curved extension 35.
The upper plates are positioned so that flat end portions 30 rest on top of inner flat portions 26 of lower blades 23, and intermediate portions 32 rest on portions 24 and 23 of said lower plate. Raised portions 33 are positioned above portions l3, l4, l5 and iii of rib H, and extensions 35 extend within spaces I8. Extension 35 of one upper blade is on top and its curved inner edge rests against the curved edge of raised portion 33. The extension 35 of the corresponding upper blade is likewise on top on the opposite side, in a corresponding position.
A guy rod 35 is screwed, or otherwise suitably attached to the base [0 at the center thereof. A nut 31 is provided to prevent displacement. The guy rod 36 extends upwardly past the blades 23 and 29 and receives hole 38 in scroll member 39.
Scroll member 39 has on its inner face a continuous spiral groove 4| and on its outer face 42 four spaced ribs 43, each rib substantially at right angles to the adjacent rib.
A set screw collar 44 is locked in place on said guy rod 36 just above said scroll member 39.
In field operation. a hole of the proper size is dug. The whole assembly is lowered into the hole. Then a piece of pipe with four slots cut in the end is lowered over the guy rod. A pipe wrench is used on the pipe and a crowbar inserted into the eye of the guy to hold it stationary while the scroll is rotated with the pipe wrench. The rotation of the scroll feeds out the plates of the anchor into the earth. Please note that the: clockwise rotation of the scroll feeds out the blades of the anchor into the earth. A quarter turn of the scroll member 39 feeds out one of the blades 23 as in Fig. 10. In the next quarter turn, one of the blades 29 is fed out as in Fig. 11. A third quarter turn feeds out the other blade 23 as in Fig. 12, while in the last quarter turn, the second blade 29 is fed out as in Fig. 13, completing the spreading of the anchor in the soil. The scroll terminates so that the anchor may be removed if desired by turning the scroll in the opposite direction.
It will be noted that the small diameter of the spiral is concentric for three quarters of the turn, allowing the knobs 28 and 34 to be equidistant from center at the start. Each quarter turn advances a knob outwardly as explained heretofore.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
An expanding anchor for guy poles comprising a base, a pair of lower blades on said base, a pair of upper blades at substantially right angles to said lower blades on said lower blades, each of said blades having a knob exposed at its inner portion, a scroll member having a spiral pathway on its inner surface, said knobs positioned within said spiral pathway, a. guy rod extending through said scroll member and said blades, and attached to said base, a collar positioned on said guy rod above said scroll, means for locking said collar, said scroll member having spaced ribs on its outer surface, said ribs adapted to be engaged by a wrench to turn said scroll member and move said blades outwardly into surrounding soil for anchoring, said ribs also adapted to be engaged by a wrench to turn said scroll member in the opposite direction to move the blades inwardly away from anchoring position.
