Sept. 9, 1947. w. J. BILODEAU 2,427,134
INSULATING BUSHING Filed Sept. 11, 1945 Figl.
In vehtori Wilfred J.B'ilodeau,
His Attorney.
Patented Sept. 9, 1947 INSULATING BUSHING Wilfred. JuBilodeau; Windsor, Mass., assignor to General- Electric Company, a corporation of New York Application September 11, 1945, Serial No. 615.670
3 Claims. 1
This invention relatesto electrical apparatus and more. particularly to; improvementsin high voltage electrical apparatus.
The terminal equipment .for high voltage electrical apparatusmust be spaced sufficiently from the normally grounded parts of the apparatus, such' as its enclosing. metal casing, that arcs or fiash-oversacross said distance are prevented. However, this spacing materially increases the over-all dimensions of the apparatus so that it sometimes will not pass through clearance distances on highways or railways during transportation or shipment of'the apparatus.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a novel-and simple arrangement for extending the high voltage terminal equipment for electrical apparatus when the apparatus is in operation and for retracting it when the apparatus is de-energized for transportation or shipment. The invention is characterized by mounting the terminal equipment or element on the end of an angle member, the other end of which is rotatably mounted on the. apparatus, the axis of rotation being inclined to. the apparatus.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved electrical apparatus.
Another" object. of the invention is to provide new and improved retractable high voltage terminal equipment for electrical apparatus.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel high voltage bushing construction for electrical apparatus.
The invention will be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portable transformer provided with preferred embodiments of the invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation, partly in section, of one of the units of my invention in its extended position, and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the apparatus in its retracted position.
Referring now to the drawing and more particularly to Fig. 1, there is shown therein a portable transformer having a pair of high voltage bushings 2 and 3. The bushing 2 is shown in its extended or normally operative position and the bushing 3 is shown in its retracted position, to which position it is moved when the transformer is to be moved. In addition, the transformer is shown as being provided with a low voltage bushing 4 and a similar low voltage bushing which is not visible is beneath a slidable cover 5. A similar cover 5 is associated with the bushing 4 and,
likewise, generally. similar but proportionately larger covers 6- are associated with the high voltagebushings 2 and 3'. It will be understood. that when the transformer is in operation all of the bushings are in their extended positions, as shown by the bushings 2 and- 4, whereas when the unit is de-energiaed all of the bushings will normally be in their retracted positions corresponding to the position of bushing 3 and all of them will be covered by their covers which are slid in place like the cover 5.. On. the outer end of eachbushing is a terminal I.
The structural features of the bushing 2 are shownin Fig. 2 and it will be seen that the bushing consists of a central or intermediate member 8, extending from opposite ends of which are conventional petticoated ceramic insulating members 9 and Ill. The parts 8 and 10 are shown in axial alignment and the axis of the part 9 is shown inclined to the axis of the parts 8 and H1 at a suitable angle.
The bushing is passed through an openingin a part II of the casing 12 of the transformer. A hollow cylindrical member [3 is attached to the rim of the opening in the part H, such as by welding which is indicated at [4. The axis of the hollow cylindrical member I3 is also-shown inclined at an angle to the perpendicular to the part I I.
For holding the bushing in any desired position the member I3 is provided with a flange [5 and the intermediate part 8 of the bushing is provided with a flange l5 and these parts are provided with a plurality of registering holes through which locking bolts l1 may be passed. In addition, suitable gasketing material may be employed between the flanges for sealing the casing of the apparatus.
Fig. 3 shows the details of the duplicate high voltage bushing 3 in its retracted position. In order to put the bushing 2 in the position in which the bushing 3 is shown, or vice versa, the bolts I! are removed and the bushing is rotated half a turn more or less in the sleeve or cylindrical member I3. This causes the outer part 9 to go from a position perpendicular to the part i! to a position parallel to the part II, or vice versa. After the bushing has been lowered to the position shown in Fig. 3 the bolts I! are reinserted and the cover 6 slid into place, as shown in Fig. 3, thus protecting the bushing from dirt, dust and breakage and providing an attractive streamlined appearance.
The inner end of the part It (not shown) is of course provided with another electrical ter- 3 minal for making electrical connection to the apparatus inside the casing in any well known manner, such as by means of a cable which will flex sufiiciently to permit rotation of the bushing through half a turn more or less about the axis of the sleeve l3.
While there have been shown and described particular embodiments of this invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the invention and, therefore, it is aimed in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In combination, an enclosing casing for electrical apparatus, an opening in a part of said casing, a hollow cylindrical member passing through said opening, means for fastening said member to said casing with the axis of said member at a suitable angle with the perpendicular to said part of said casing, and an insulating bushing having two end members separated by a cylindrical intermediate member, said intermediate member and one end member being coaxially aligned, the other end member having an axis inclined at a suitable angle with the axis of said intermediate member, said intermediate member being mounted for rotation in said hollow cylindrical member with the aligned end member in said casing and the inclined end member outside said casing whereby rotation of said intermediate member about its axis through half a turn more or less will vary the inclination of said outer member relative to said part of the casing from approximately parallel thereto to perpendicular thereto.
2. In combination, an enclosing casing for electrical apparatus mounted on wheels for highway transportation, a depression in the top of said casing, a circular opening in the top of said casing at one end of said depression, said opening having an axis inclined to the vertical, and a high voltage insulating bushing having a central cylindrical portion mounted for axial rotation in said opening, said bushing having an insulating portion which extends into said casing and which is coaxial with the central por tion of said bushing, said bushing having another insulating portion which extends outside of said casing and which is inclined at an angle to the axis of said central portion whereby axial rotation of said central portion through one-half turn moves the portion of said bushing which extends outside of said casing between a vertical position and a horizontal position in said depression.
3. In combination, an enclosed casing for electrical apparatus mounted on wheels for high way transportation, a depression in the top of said casing, a circular opening in the top of said casing at one end of said depression, said opening having an axis inclined substantially 45 to the vertical, a high voltage insulating bushing having a central cylindrical portion mounted for axial rotation in said opening, said bushing having an insulating portion extending into said casing which is coaxial with its central portion, said bushing having an insulating portion extending outside of said casing and inclined at an angle of substantially 45 to the axis of said central portion whereby axial rotation of said central portion through one-half turn moves the insulating portion of said bushing which is outside of said casing between a vertical position and a horizontal position in said depression, and a movable cover for said depression.
