The invention relates to a hat for women or children and aims to provide a very attractive piece of attire which requires a minimum of work in its production.

The invention consists in a hat comprising an originally fiat piece of fabric and a gathering means passed back and forth through the fabric along three sides of a rectangle the fourth side of which coincides with one edge of the fabric. The invention also consists in a blank for a hat of the mentioned type wherein the blank is a flat piece of fabric with a number of holes arranged on three sides of a rectangle, through which holes a gathering means may be passed.

Other details and objects of the invention will be apparent from the description given hereinafter and the accompanying drawing illustrating embodiments thereof by way of example. In the drawing:

Figs, 1, 3, and are a perspective view, a rear view, and a perspective view respectively, of three different embodiments of the invention. Figs. 2, 4, and 6 are top plan views of the pieces of fabric of which the hats of Figs. 1, 3, and 5 are made, and Fig. '1 is a similar view of a piece of fabric for a modified hat.

Referring now to the drawing,`Figs. 1 and 2, the hat in general denoted by I, consists of a piece of fabric 2 and a gathering means 3 which may be flexible or rigid. The piece of fabric shown in Fig. 2 is rectangular, so that its edges 4, 5 and 6, 1 are pair-wise parallel to each other. However, this is by no means necessary, but it is preferable that the edges of one of the pairs are substantially parallel to each other. A number of holes 8 are provided in the fabric and arranged along three sides 9, IIJ, I I Vof a rectangle I2, the fourth of which coincides with the edge Il of the fabric. A gathering means, in the embodiment of Fig. 1, a pin 3 having a head I4 is passed through the holes 8, one after the other, beginning with one of the holes close to edge 4, i. e. for instance hole 8, following the sides 9, Ill, and II of the rectangle I2 and ending with the hole 8" which is close to the same edge 4. A nut I5 or other securing means, then, put on the free end of the pin holds the gathered folds on the latter, and the so-formed hat comprises a hollow cap portion I6 and a ruffle-like portion I1 depending from the gathering means 3. It will be clear that the portion I6 is formed of the material bordered by the rectangle I2 whereas the portion I1 consists of the material between the edges 5, 6, and 'I and the rectangle I2. In order to make a hat according to the invention it is, of course, not necessary to provide the holes 8 in the fabric 2 before the gathering means is applied. If such means consists of a pointed pin, it is sufficient to pass the pin back and forth through the fabric along the three sides 9, I0, and II of the rectangle I2.

Hats of a similar type but different appearance will be obtained depending on the location of the rectangle I2 in relation to the edges of the fabric, and on the original shape of the latter. In Fig. 4 the piece of fabric or hat blank 22 has short edges 24 and 25 and longer edges 26 and 21 and the sides 9, I0, and Il of the rectangle I2 are so arranged that the fourth side coincides with the short edge 24. The hat will, then, have an appearance as shown in Fig. 3 where the part depending from the gathering means 23 comprises a long trailing :middle portion 28 between two shorter side portions 29 and 3B. It will be noted that in Fig. 3 the gathering means is a safety pin. Such pin is particularly well suited for the purpose of the present invention because, on the one hand, it excludes the danger of an injury to the wearer or other person, on the other hand the free bar of the safety pin may be adorned as desired, for instance in the manner of costume jewelry.

If, as in the case of Fig. 6, the rectangle I2 of the holes 8 is arranged with its side II close to the short side 36 of the fabric 32, whereas there is a considerable length of material between its side I I and the edge 31, then the hat will have a shawl 38 depending sideways from the gathering means shown in Fig. 5 in the form of a ribbon 33. The end of the shawl is slantingly cut according to the edge 31 of the fabric in Fig. 6, whereasthe remainder 39 of the part depending from the gathering means is of substantially uniform length owing to approximately equal distances of the sides 9 and IU from the edges 316 and 35 respectively. From the foregoing it will be clear that a hat with two depending shawls can be made by using a long piece 42 of fabric and arranging the rectangle I2 substantially in the middle between the two short edges 46 and 41 as shown in Fig. '7.

It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many modifications and alterations of the embodiments shown and described are possible without departure from the spirit and essence of my invention which for this reason, shall be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A hat comprising a four-edged piece of fabric, a rectangular portion of which is adapted the fourth side of said rectangular portion form- 5 ing the major part of the head encircling portion.

2. A hat as claimed in claim 1, said gathering means having a portion bearing upon the outside of said gathered unit, so as to have the effect of a piece of costume jewelry.

3. A hat as claimed in claim 1 wherein a portion of said piece of fabric suspends at least from one of said gathered sides at a greater length, than a portion suspends from another one of said gathered sides, so as to form a shawlor veil-like integral appendix of the hat. Y
