1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to: a dispensing apparatus and .more especially to an apparatus of this type which is adapted to be associated with a collapsible tube containing tooth paste and the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and efficient dispensing mechanism which has means associated therewith for squeezing acollapsible tube containing paste and forcing desired quantities onto a brush or other article upon which the paste is adapted to be used. y It is a further object of this invention to provide a dispensing apparatus of the class described comprising a collapsible tube with means for resiliently pressing said tube to force the paste therein, from the same, and means for automatically opening'the port of said tube upon the operation ofthe squeezing mechanism. Also means are provided whereby the port of the tube will be automatically closed when the operation of the squeezing mechanism ceases.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top plan view of a form of the inventionV with the top cover removed;

l?"igure 10 is a top plan View of the upper left hand portion of Figure 8 but showing the handle Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 15 indicates a casing while 18 indicates a suitable cover which is snapped in position by means o1 a spring dog 11 disposed on the rear end wall of the casing 15 and engaging a suitable cavity on the interior surface of cover 16. The casing 15 has a block 18 secured therein on which is secured the rear end of a piece of spring steel 19. The front end wall of the casing 15 has a cavity 80 therein in which the screw-threaded neck 8| of a tube of paste 82 is adapted to t.
The discharge end of cavity is closed by a metallic plate 88 having overhanging lips 83 and r 84 in which a gate member 85 is slidably mounted.
The gate member has an opening 86 therein adapted at times to coincide with an opening 81 in plate B8 and communicating with the cavity 80 and into which the screw-threaded neck of the tube 82 is adapted to t. The bottom of the casing 15 hassecured therein a metallic plate 89 to which the member 18 is attached.
Rising upwardly from the rear end of the casing 15 is a pair of projections 90 and 9i which have sprocket wheels l92 and 93 rotatably mounted on the proximate sides thereof on suitable screws 94 on which sprocket chains 95 and 9B are mounted. A U-shaped member 91 is adapted to slide on the plate 89 and it has a pair of rollers 98' and 99 rotatably mounted therein and adapted to engage the spring steel plate 19. Adapted to rest on top of the tube 82 is a second spring steel member |00 provided with an upturned rear` portion |0I. Adapted to rest on the spring steel member |00 is a roller |02 rotatably mounted on a shaft |03 ilxedly secured in outstanding lugs |04 appearing on each of the vertical legs of the U-shaped member 91.
Suitable screws |05 penetrate the lower layers of the sprocket chains 95 and 96 and are threadably received in lugs |04 to thereby cause the lower layer of the sprocket chains 95 and 96 to move the U-shaped member along with .rollers 98, 99, and |02 to the left in Figures 1 and 2 to press `the spring steel members 19 and |00 ggwards each other to force paste from the tube The plate member 88 having the opening 81 therein and having the outwardly and inwardly turned lip portions 83 and 84 forms a. guideway in which closure member is slidably mounted. This closure member has an uprising projection |05 which is engaged by a cam |06 on a cylindrical member |01,` the interior structure of which will be presently described.

Loosely mounted around the hub portion of member H5 is a torsion spring H8 which.' is hooked around a pin projecting from one side of the casing member l5 and the other leg of the spring H3 is anchored to a portion l'i' which is integral with the cylindrical member it?. The cylindrical member ll has a handle portion extending therefrom so` that when the cylindrical lmember is given a part rotation, the torsion spring |58 will return it to the posi tion shown in Figures 1, 2, and 6. Secured on the endof shaft |69 by means of a screw 2i is a ratchet wheel 22 which is also keyed on the shaft iliiy by means of a keyway i223. Method of operation With the parts in the position .shown inA Fig ures i, 2', 6, and S, and with the cover in posi! tion as shown in Figure 2, the handle 35 is' moved in a clockwise 'manner in Figure 2 to theV position shown in Figure 11. As movement is rst imparted to the handle, the cam HES on cylindrical member le? proceeds to open the gate 85 to where openings 86 and will coincide; and, when this point hasy been reached, pin it wili occupy a position as shown in Figure l1, pin being nxed to the lower casing l5. At lthis point. the radial distance of pin I2@ from the pivot point E25 oi pawl E21 will allow the tooth |28 to engage the ratchet wheel |22 which willl then begin to rotate shaft its which will advanceroller lei. If desired, the base of covery 15 may have one or more suitable bayonet slots having an enlarged portion and a restricted portion |31 which can be slid over and moved downwardly over a suitable pin, not shown, in a wall which will hold the dispenser in position.
In the drawings and specication there has been set forth a .preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specic terms are emv ployed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being dened in the claim.
.What is claimed is:
;..A pparatus for dispensing paste from a tube comprising a casing having means for receiving a tube of paste, the front end of the casing having a cavity therein for reception of the open end of the tube.,` the iront end of the casing having' an opening extending from the cavity to the exte-Y rior of the casing, a sliding closure for the opening, a spring steel plate having its rear end mounted in the rear end of the casing in spaced relation from the bottom of the casing and on which a tube of paste is adapted to rest, a second springsteel member adapted to rest on top of the tube, a U-shaped member having alower rollerad-apted to travel along the lower surface or" the iirst spring. steel member and having an upper roller adapted to travel along the top surface of the second spring steel member, to there# by compress the tube disposed between the two spring steel members. a pair of endless chains mounted at each end of .the casingV for rotation and having their lower portions secured to the U-shaped member, the .mounting of the chains at the iront end of the casing comprising. a transversely disposed shaft rotatably .mounted in the casing and having aA pair of sprocket wheels thereon on which the chains are mounted-a ratchet wheel fixed on one end of the shaft, oscillatable means on said shaft having a dog for engaging the ratchet wheel after the oscillatable means have been moved a predetermined amount for, imparting rotation to the shaftA and a connection between the oscillatable means and the closure means for moving the closure from over said opening, before rotation is imparted to the shaft.
