Description
(No Model.) S. E. DARNE.
COMBINED CRADLE AND NURSERY. No. 246,729. Patented Sept. 6,1881.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PA ENT OFrIcE.
SAMUEL E. DARNE, OF FAIR PLAY, COLORADO.
COMBINED CRADLE AND NURSERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,729, dated September Application filed February 19, 1881. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. DARNE, of Fair Play, in the county of Park and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Combined Cradle and Nursery, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this device is to provide an improved article for household purposes that can be used either as a combined cradle and crib or as a separate cradle and separate nursery for children.
Theinvention consistsin constructing the era dle with a detachable top frame or crib so made and applied that when theframeis used upon the cradle it forms an efl'ective crib to protect and keep the child within the cradle, and when the crib is removed and placed upon the floor it forms an efi'ective nursery, in which the child may be placed and protected, taught to walk,
amused, &c.
Figure l is a perspective view of the nursery portion of the device. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the rockers and bed-frame, with parts broken away to exhibit other parts. Fig.3 is a sectional elevation of the combined cradle and nursery.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Arepresents the cradle, and A the bed-frame of the cradle, with the outer end and side strips, a, fashioned in some ornamental design and higher than the inner strips, I); and between the strips (0 b is formed a groove, 0, extending all around the bed-frame A.
B are the legs of the cradle; C, the crossbars or rungs; D, the rocker, and F the crossslats to support a bed.
E represents the nursery or crib, consisting of top and bottom rectangular open frames, df, respectively, that are connected by vertical bars or slats g g,- and on the bottom frame,f, are fastened casters h, that facilitate the rolling or moving about of said nursery E upon a floor when it is removed from the cradle.
When the combined cradle and nursery is made of fine wood it forms an ornamental article for the household, while at the same time it possesses several very useful qualities.
When the nursery E is applied upon the cradle, as shown in Fig. 3, it forms'an effective crib, in which the child is protected from falling from the cradle or other accident. WVhe-n the nursery E is removed from the cradle the latter may still be used for all the ordinary purposes of a cradle, while the nursery E, if placed upon the floor, forms an inclosure in which a young child may be placed to amuse itself, yet be protected from accident. The bottom part of the nurseryE is intended to be provided with casters h, on which the nursery may easily roll or be propelled, the object being to enable the child to creep and push the nursery about and finally learn to walk.
The use of this invention in the household is calculated to promote the health and safety of children, and to save time, labor, and care on the part of attendants.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and-desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A combined cradle and nursery constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a cradle, A, and detachable nursery E, as set forth.
2. In a combined cradle and nursery, the bed-frame A, provided with groove 0 to receive the nursery E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
SAMUEL E. DARNE.
