TOBACCO PIPE Filed July 14, 1945 ATTOlNEY Patented Apr. 12, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOBACCO PIPE Samuel Lawrence Atkins, New York, N. Y.
Application July 14, 1945, Serial No. 605,137
Claims. (01. 131 19s) This invention comprises an improved tobacco pipe.
Among the objects of the invention are: To provide a pipe having a multi-section bowl and lead-out portion which can be readily taken apart to permit cleaning, repair or replacement of the parts; to provide a pipe having a bowl composed of upper and lower chambers separated by a removable grate for holding the tobacco particles in suspension, the grate (by virtue of its construction) afiording complete combustion of the particles and permitting fresh air to be drawn into the lower chamber for mixing with the smoke, thereby reducing the temperature within the lower chamber; and to provide, for use in a pipe bowl, a removable grate having integrally arranged air inlets designed to fit into apertures in thebowl.
A more complete description of the invention follows in conjunction with a drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a pipe constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bowl and lead-out portion of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 2 along the line 3-3; h
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a pipe bowl and lead-out portion of another embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the removable grate which is utilized in the bowls of Figs. 1 to 5.
Throughout the figures of the drawing, the same parts are designated by the same reference numerals.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 in more detail, there is shown a tobacco pipe having a bowl or cup, a lead-out portion I4, I6, and a mouthpiece portion 20. The bowl or cup comprises an upper part I2 which has a bore II forming an upper chamber, and a lower part integral with the adjacent ends of lead-out portion or stem I4, I 6 and forming a lower chamber I3. Chambers II and I3 are separated by a wire mesh grate 24 provided with tubular rods or inlets 26 havin apertures 28 for permitting air to be drawn into the lower chamber.
The lower end of bowl portion I2 is cut away at I2 so as to nest into a shoulder I-B of the stem or lead-out portion. The cup or bowl of the pipe is formed of three sections l2, I4 and I6. These sections are held together by a removable metallic band I8 which slides over the upper part I2.
The lead-out portion or stem, in effect, comprises two halves I4 and I6 which meet along line H, and are provided with a central aperture or bore I5 which communicates at one end with the lower chamber I3 and at the other end with the conventional bore of the mouthpiece 20. One end of the lead-out portion orstem I4, 16 forms the lower end of the bowl, while, the other end is tapered at 22 for nesting within the large dimensioned end ID of the mouthpiece 20. Elements I4 and I6 are thus held firmly together by the band I 8 at one end, and by the stem 29 at the other end.
The grate 24 is shown in more detail in Fig. 6, and comprises a central metallic wire mesh formation having a pair of square-shaped tubular rods or inlets 26 positioned opposite each other and securely fastened to said grate, as by soldering, brazing, etc. The tubular inlets are each provided with a central bore or aperture 28 for permitting air to be drawn therethrough. These inlets 2B are designed to fit into square-shaped apertures in portions I4 and IS on opposite sides of lower chamber I3. The square configuration of the inlets 2B and the apertures in the lower part of the bowl. or cup prevent rocking of the grate when positioned within the pipe bowl.
It should be noted from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2 that the inlets 26 of grate 24 extend slightly beyond the exterior surface of the bowl and form a rest or stop for the band I8.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate another embodiment of the invention utilizing a bowl having upper and lower chambers II and I3 separated by a grate 24 provided with square shaped inlets 26. The essential difference between the embodiments of Figs. 4 and 5 and Figs. 1, 2 and 3 lies in the fact that the cup or bowl of Figs. 4 and 5 comprises only two parts Ma and Ifia which form continuations of the lead-out portion or stem. Parts Ma and I6a constitute halves of the stem which meet along line Ila. The central or interior of the stem is provided with a bore I511 at the lower part of the bowl and this bore I5a communicates at one end with the lower chamber I3 of the bowl, as shown, and at the other end with the mouthpiece in the same manner as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In using the pipe of the invention, the inlets 26 permit air to be drawn into the lower chamber I3 by the draft or pull oi the smoker on the pipe. This inrushing air mixes with the smoke in chamber I3 and reduces the temperature within this chamber. The cooling of chamber I3 afiects condensation of the tarry substances formed in the combustion of the tobacco and results in a dry smoke. The numerous openings in the gridlike grate enable the oxygen drawn into the lower chamber through inlets 26 to contact almost the entire surface of the tobacco resting on the grate, and thus achieve uniform and complete combustion of thetobacco particles The pipe: of ttheinvention is simpl'eiiniconstruc tion, inexpensive to manufacture, eflicient in use and service, and enables easy access to the differ ent parts for cleaning, repair or replacement.
What is claimed is: l. A tobacco pipe comprising -a .multi-bsection bowl having an upper chamber and a lower chamber, and a wire mesh grate separatingssaidrtwo chambers, said lower chamber communicating, with the stem of the pipe,rsaid grate having fixedly secured thereto. solely at its edges a plurality of spaced tubular rods forming air =inlets for said lower chamber, said bowl having ,a plurality o'f correspondingly spaced apertures extending from its interior'at' locations below'the wire mesh portion of the grate to the outer surface of the bowl foraccommodating 'the'tubular rods of said ingthe same, and said apertures being located below thewire mesh portion .of saidgrate.

A tobacco pipe comprising a 'multi section bowl having an upper'cham'ber anda'lower chamber, .and a foram'inous grate separating said two chambers, said lower chamber communicating with'the stem ofthe pipe, said'grate having fixedlysecuredithereto solelyat its'edges on opposite 5 sides .thereof. a pairof air inlet tubes'for enabling air-to beidrawn into said lower chamber-fromoutside of said pipe, and said "lower chamber having 4 a pair of correspondingly positioned apertures for accommodating said air inlet tubes.
4. A tobacco pipe comprising a multi-section bowl having an upper chamber and a lower chamber, a wire mesh grate separating said two chambers, said lower chamber communicating with the stem of the pipe, said grate having fixedly secured thereto solely at its edges a plurality of spaced tubu1ar..-rods aforming air inlets for said lower chamber, aud t-said bowl having :a plurality of correspondingly spaced apertures extending from xitssinterior at locations below the wire mesh portion of the grate to the outer surface of the bowl .forsacc'ommodating the tubular rods of said grate, and a. metallic band encircling said bowl for holding'the sections thereof together, said tubular rods extendingrpastzthexouter surface of said bowl and lformingsupports for said metallic band.
'5. A tobacco pipe comprising a multi-section bowl having an upper chamber and a lower chamber, and a "foraminous grate separating said two chambers, said lower chamber communicating with-the stembfthe pipe, and-a pair of substantially diametrically positioned air inlet means passing entirely through the walls of said pipe bowl'and-termin'ating at pointstadjacent the inner surfaces of the walls of said bowl and also adjacent but below 'theouter edges of said grate, said air-inlet means havingtheir aXes in a plane above said'stem, said grate being supported in said bowlat'its-edges by said inlet-meansatpoints immediately above the *innerterminations of said air'inlet means.
