SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,755, dated October 26, 1880.

To all whom it mag] concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. HILL, of Big Rapids, in the county of M ecosta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Rolling and Turning Logs, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2is a sectional side elevation taken through the line a: 01, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken through the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a part of the toothed bar.
The object of this invention is to furnish machines for rolling logs upon saw-mill carriages and logways, turning the logs upon the head-blocks, and pressing them back against the knees, which shall be simple in construction and convenient and effective in use.

A represents the frame of a saw-mill. B are the ways. 0 is the carriage. D is a headblock, and E is a knee, all of which parts are constructed in the ordinary manner. F is a steam-cylinder, to the lower head of which are attached, or upon it are formed, gudgeons G. The gudgeons Gr work in bearings H attached to the frame A or other suitable support. One of the gudgeons G may be made hollow to serve as a pipe for introducing steam into the cylinder F.
I is the piston, the piston-rod J of which passes outthrough a stuffing-box in the upper head of the cylinder F. To the outer end of the piston-rod J is hinged the end of one arm of the forked lower end of the stock K, the end of the other arm of which is hinged to the upper end of the bar L. The barL passes down through a guide-hole in a bracket or other support, M, attached to the frame A, and is secured in place adjustably by a lever-cam, N, pivoted to the support M, and which bears against the said bar L. The bar L is raised when released from the cam N by a spiral spring, 0, placed upon the upper part of the bar L. The lower end of the spring 0 rests against the bracket M, audits upper end rests against a shoulder or collar formed upon or attached to the bar L at or near its upper end.
To the end of the arm of the stock K, or to the upper end of the sliding bar L, is hinged the end of the bar I the other end of which is hinged to the frame A. The bar 1? is designed to hold the cylinderF and the toothed stock K in proper position.
From the bar P is suspended a weight, Q, to hold the stock K against the log. The stock K passes up through a slot in the bar or plate It, attached adjustably to the frameAor way B,to hold the stock K from lateral movement and limit its outward movement. The stock Kis slotted longitudinally to receive the series of teeth S, which teeth are pivoted at their inner ends or bases to and between the side parts of the said stock K in such positions that when turned downward their points will project at the inner side of the stock K to engage with the log. \Vhen the teeth S are turned upward they will be wholly within the stock K. The teeth S are supported against the downward pressure when turning a log by pins T, attached to the stock K, and their upward movement is limited by pins U, also attached to the said stock K. The pins T are so placed as to hold the teeth S in an upwardly-inclined position, so that when the stockKis swung forward against the flat surface of the log the teeth S that come in contact with the said flat surface will be forced back into the slot of the stock K, and will thus be prevented from tearing or marring the lumber.
V are the inclined skids of the logway, upon which the logs are placed, and from which they are rolled to the head-blocks D of the carriage O. The logs upon the skids V are kept from rolling down against the carriage O by blocks W, placed upon or attached to the said skids V.
In using the machine, when a log is upon the head-blocksD and is to be turned, the stock K is swung against the log and the steam is admitted to the cylinder F, which raises the piston I, piston-rod J, and stock K, causing the teeth S to engage with the log and turn it. As the log comes into position the bar L is locked by the cam N, which stops the upward movement of the stock K and causes the said stock to press the log firmly against the knees S. \Vhen a flat surface of a log is out- I00 slot of the stock K, and the log is turned by the teeth S that come in contact with the round surface of the log below the said fiat surface. When a log is to be rolled from the logway to the carriage the stock K is lowered by the descent of the piston I and swung baclcbeneath the log by the action of the spring 0, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Steam is then admitted to the cylinder F and the log is rolled, as hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 1. A machine for rolling and turi'iing logs, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the steam-cylinder F, the piston I, and piston-rod J, the branched stock K, having hinged receding teeth S and stops 1 U, guide-rod L, lever-cam N, and spring 0, and the hinged bar P, as set forth.
2. In a machine for rolling and turning logs, the combination, with the steam-cylinder F, having piston I and piston-rod J, and the forked stock K and teeth S, of the sliding bar L, the lever-cam N, and bar P, substantially as shown, whereby the stock K, by steampressurc, can be made to press the log against the knees, as set forth.
3. In amaohine for rolling and turning logs, the combination, with the steam-cylinder F, having piston I and piston-rod J, and the forked stock K and teeth S, of the hinged bar P, substantially as shown and described, whereby the cylinder F and stock K are held in position, as set forth.
