Description
Jan. 12, 1943. 's. D. YOUNG- CAP- OR CLOSURE- FOR BOTTLES OR LIKE CONTAINERS Filed Sept. 29, 194} I Patented Jan. 12, 1943 UNi'lE S TES R CLOSURE FOR BOTTLES 0R LIKE I CONTAINERS Samuel Davison Young, Rugby, England, assigncr to Samuel Arthur Hunter, Faringdon, England Application September 29, 1941, Serial No. 412,848
In Great Britain July 17, 1941 1 Claim.
This invention relates to caps or closures for bottles and like containers and has for its object to provide an improved form of closure of the kind adapted to engage a bead of relatively restricted width located immediately adjacent to the mouth of the bottle or like container, in which a sealing pad of cork or the like or a ring or washer which may be formed of a rubber composition of the flow-in type forms not only a top seal but also a side seal extending for a limited distance over the edges or sides of the bead which, while of a pilfer-proof character may, after it initial detachment from the bottle, be re-engaged therewith and provide a liquid-tight seal, on the removal of the detachable ears or lugs.
According to the invention, the cap or closure is furnished intermediate in its depth with a reinforcing rib, and an incision is made above the circumferential rib or corrugation, or in other words towards the top of the cap or closure and extending into this rib or corrugation, thereby leaving such ears or lugs, the upper extremity of each of which is beaded over or incurved and is thus strengthened or siffened thus assisting in its removal, and is otherwise of a character such that risk of injury to the user in handling and removing the cap or closure will be minimised or avoided.
By the arrangement of the incision at the position indicated, the manufacture of the cap or closure is facilitated and further the arrangement of the incision at this position enables the invention to be applied to caps or closures in which the depth or height of the peripheral walls is extremely limited.
Normally, in accordance with the invention, the ears or lugs are formed in the peripheral wall of the closure by an operation involving the removal of metal so as to leave a space permitting the insertion of the thumbnail or a suitable tool to facilitate the detachment of the ears or lugs.
In no case do these ears or lugs extend into the upper surface of the cap or closure and, normally, they terminate at a point a short distance below the upper surface of the cap or closure, so as to avoid exposure to any considerable extent of the peripheral edge of the cork disc or the like.
In the initial application of the cap or closure to the bottle or the like, the portion of the cap adjacent to the free edge of the peripheral wall is beaded or rolled or otherwise contracted to engage over the bead by the employment of a chuck of appropriate or generally known character; The cap or closure in accordance with the invention may be removed from the bottle or like container by the employment of an opener of suitable character without the necessity for detaching the ears or lugs or, alternatively, it may be detached from the bottle by removing the ears or lugs and applying pressure by the thumb or finger against the peripheral walls, the circumferential corrugations furnishing a convenient bearing surface for the thumb or finger.
After the detachment of the lugs or ears and the removal of the cap or closure from the bottle or the like, it may be re-engaged with the bead provided adjacent to the mouth thereof sufiiciently firmly to provide an effective connection in preventing the accidental displacement of the cap or closure from its position on the bottle or the like.
The cap or closure may in certain cases be provided in the head thereof with a circumferential groove adapted to contain a washer or sealing pad which may, for instance, be formed of a rubber composition of the flow-in type but preferably the head of the cap or closure is not provided with such a groove.
The invention will be described further in detail and by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a View partly in section of a cap or closure;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a plan view;
Figure 4 is a view in section of the cap or clo sure in position on a bottle neck of the type having a bead immediately adjacent to its mouth;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in elevation of a bottle neck furnished with a closure in accordance with the invention, with the ears orlugs removed to permit the removal of the cap or closure from the bottle neck.
Referring to the drawing, l is the top of the cap or closure which is in the form of a shallow cup-shaped element the peripheral wall 2 of which is provided with a circumferential head or corrugation 3 functioning as a reinforcement and at two points in the peripheral walls there are provided slots 4 which are located mainly immediately above the reinforcing corrugation but have their extremities extending into such corrugation. These slots are formed by an operation involving removal of metal and partially severing the lugs or ears 5 from the peripheral walls of the cap or closure in which there is provided a sealing ring formed, for instance, from a rubber composition of the flow-in type 6 alter- The cap or closure will thus be fastened securely on the neck of the bottle and it cannot be removed until the tongues 5 are torn away after which the cap or closure may be removed by finger I claim:
A metal cap or closure for a bottle or the like in the form of a shallow cup-shaped element having a top portion from which extends a peripheral flange designed to be beaded over in engaging the cap or closure with the container, furnished with a circumferential outwardly extending bead or corrugation midway in its depth functioning as a reinforcement and having at at least two diametrically opposite points slots each of which has a portion located immediately above the reinforcing corrugation, the extremities of this portion extending into such corrugation thereby forming ears adapted .to be removed to enable pressure and may be replaced on the neck of the 15 th cap t b d tach d from the bottle,
bottle to form a substantially liquid-tight seal.
