Description
March 20, 1945.` 1 BEN'STEIN FOLDING POCKET FAN Filed May 8, 1945 INVENTOR. ands erzzsa Arroz/Vey Patented Mar. 20, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT- FOLDING POCKET FAN Louis Bernstein, Brooklyn, N. Y. pplication May 8, 1943, Serial No. 486,130 claims. (o1. 230468) This invention relates to new and useful irnprovements in a folding pocket fan. More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a folding pocket fan characterized by a flat fan blade to when a handle is vpvotally attached in a manner to permit the fan blade and handle to be folded into va superimposed position, one on the other, to reduce the length of the fan, Ipermitting'it to be carried in a purse or pocketbook or in a pocket of ones clothing.
Still further it is proposed to characterize vthe handle by a flat stripv of` sheet material which is bent at its center forming side arms which are slightly longer than the length of the fan blade and having the ends of its side arms enga-ging over opposite faces of an edge portion of the fan blade with a fold engaged throughthe overlap'- pingportions of the arms and fan blade in a manner to permit the fan blade to be extended from the handle or be pivoted to an inoperative position between the side arms of the handle.`
Still another object of the invention proposes the provision of `a pair of strips mounted on said pintle adjacent the inner faces of said side arms and having top lugs attached to the side arms and provided with a fastening means arranged in a manner to releasably grip the edge portion' cf the blade to maintain the blade and handle in a releasable operative position.
For further comprehension of the invention,
and of the objects and advantages thereof, refi erence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of thisdisclosure: v
. Fig. 1 isa perspective view of a folding pocket fan constructed in accordance with this invention, and in its collapsed condition.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 b'ut illustrating the fan in its operative extended position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View taken on the line33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of a folding pocket fan constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention. i
Fig. 5 is an enlarged partial sectional View taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating a further modification of the invention. Fig. 7 is an enlarged partial vertical sectional view taken on the Yline 'I--l of Fig. 6.
` The folding pocket fan, according to this in- "vention, includes a flat fan blade IIJ. This fan blade is formed of heavy cardboard andis discshaped. The opposite faces of the fan blade I0 are adapted to be imprinted with advertising ina- This handle is constructed of a flat strip of sheet material, such as cardboard or the like, and Vis bent at its center producing side arms I4.
`The strip should be of such length that when it is bent at its centerthe side arms lI4 will be of a length slightly greater thanthe height of the` fan blade I 0. The arms I4 have their free ends extended along lopposite sides of anedge portion of the blade III as clearly shown in Fig. 3. A pintle I5 is engaged through the ends of the arms I4 and the adjacentedge portion-of the fan blade IIl. The pintle I5 is in the form of a rivet.
The operation of the device is as follows:
`When the fan is being used the fan blade I0 l is pivoted into an .operative position with the handle.l I2, as shown in Fig. 2.." However,` it is possible topivo-t the fan blade IIJ. into an inoperative position between the adjacent faces of the' side `arms i4 of the' handle I2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Thismaterially reduces the operative lengthA of` the fan permitting it to be carried in a purse orpocketbook, or in apocket of ones clothing.4 y
In the form of the invention shown inFigs. 4 and5 the construction of thefolding fan is similar to that previously described, except that the fan blade Iii is. hexagonally shaped `and Va slightly diierent pintle I5' is employed for pivotally connecting together `the hexagonal fan blade Ill and the side armsI4 of thehandle I2;u In this form' of the invention the pintle I5'is lin the nature `of a paper type `cotter pin which is extended through aligned openings formed in the fan blade IIl' and the arms I4 of the handle I2. The free ends ofthe arms these free ends to maintain the pin against rotation and to prevent ones fingers from coming in contact therewith and being cut thereby.
, In other respects Athis form of the invention is identical to the previous form and like parts are identified by like reference numerals.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the construction of the folding pocket fan OFFICE f is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 3, except forthe provision of means for locking the blade III in its operative position with relation to the handle I2. In this form of the invention washers I1 are mounted upon the pintle I5 in face contact with thesides of the blade I0. A pair of strips I8 is mounted on the pintle` I1 adjacent the inner faces of the side arms I4 of the handle I2. These strips I8 are provided at their ends with lugs I9 which are pasted in position over the freeV ends of the side arms I4 in a manner to retain thestrips I8 against pivoting with relation to the handle I2.
Fastening means is mounted on the strips I8 for releasable gripping an edge portion ofthe blade I to hold the blade against pivotingrelative to the handle I2. This means comprises aA f pintleto thek sides of said blade, a pair of strips pin mounted on one of the strips I8 adjacent i one edge portion of the blade I8. A block of mentof the fan blade against the rubber material 2I in holding it against pivoting.
Means is also provided for holding these strips I8 in a position in which the pin 20 and rubber material 2I will grip the fan blade I0. This means comprises a rotative bushing 22 having a threaded portion 23. This bushing 22 isrotatively mounted upon one of the strips I8 and is cooperative with a complementary bushing 24 iixedly mounted on the other of the strips I8. The bushing 24 is formed with a threaded opening to receive the threaded projecting portion 23 of the i rotative bushing 22.
Engagement of the rotative bushing 22 with the fixed bushing 24 will cause the strips I8 to be urged together and maintained in this relationship sothat the pin 2 I and rubber material 22 will gripthe fan blade III.
The rotative bushing 22v has a head aligned with an opening 25 formed in the adjacent side arm I4 of the handle I2 permitting a screw driver or other turning tool to be engaged with this head for turning the rotative bushing 22.l nA suitable snap arrangement may also be used for holding the strips I8 in position. The free ends of the strips I8 are provided with inwardly directed bulged portions 26, as shown in Fig. 7,
which are adapted to grip the fan blade I0 when it is pivoted to the inoperative position, illus trated by the dot and dash lines I0" in Fig. 6 for frictionally maintaining the fan blade I0 in this inoperative position. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.
The handle I2 is shown with a blocked out portion I2* to permit an, illustration or photograph I2b, secured'to the inner face ol the handle, to be viewed therethrough. A match package I2c is secured to the opposite side of the handle I2 to provide additional utility for the fan.
' This folding pocket fan may also besold without any advertising matter thereon, `with any picftorial illustration, calendar, or other ornamentation. It may be used a's a fan during warm days or as a tray under glasses, bottles, etc.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, -it is tO/.be understood that I do not-limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modiilcations coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
