1 Claim. (01. 281-19) The present invention relates to improvements in binders and has for an object the provision of a binder having improved retaining means.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a binder having retaining means so associated with the binder body as to preclude disconnection or loss of'parts thereof.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a binder having retaining means designed to removably fasten a book, pamphlet or the like with the binder and. to firmly retain the same in proper position thereon.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a binder retaining means which is relatively simple'and inexpensive in construction and efiicient in use. 1

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparentv as the description progresses.

Figure 1 is a plan view of apreferred form of thebinder with a pamphlet fastened thereon,

Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the binder with a pamphlet fastened thereon.

Referring to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, Ill generally designates a binder body, in the present example embodying a pair of essentially rigid complementary end sections pivotally II is bent to form a forwardly protrudingfold or plait I2 which assumes an approximately V- shaped formation as shown at Figure 3. Outwardly of each plait l2 the strip has a longitudinally extending portion I3 forming an approximately U-shaped 'hook adapted to be slidably fitted over each end of the center body section in tight gripping arrangement. Thus, the hooked ends of the strip ll, resiliently engageable with the ends of the center body. section maintain the main length of the body firmly against the inner face of the section which thus constitutes a removable clip member. In order to strengthen the main portion of the body between the plait l2 and to preclude distortion thereof the strip is advantageously formed with a pair of transversely spaced corrugations 14 extending lengthwise of the strip inwardly of the sidev edges.

Connected with the folded projections 12 of the backing strip or clip H is a pair of generally linear resilient retaining elements 15 which may be formed of spring wire. Each of these retaining elements has a major approximately straight portion of a length slightly less than the dis-.

I tance between the projecting folds 12 of the clip and is bent at each end to form an offset l6. Projecting longitudinally outward from the ofiset at one end of the retaining wire is a relatively short straight stud forming portion IT while from the ofiset at the opposite end is extended a short shank portion l8 extending longitudinally from the offset parallel with the main portion and having formed on its outer extremity a head IQ of greater diameter than the shank and which may be in the form of a round or button head. The headed end portion of the shank I8 is disposed within the strip fold I2 and may be disposed in such position by slidably inserting the retaining wire through a hole in the inner side of the fold before mounting the backing strip on the binder body. To accommodate a pair of the retaining wires, one of the folds I2 has a pair of transversely spaced holes 20 inits inner side portion as shown to advantage at Figure 2. Such connection of each of the wire elements l5 enables disposal thereof longitudinally on the backing strip with the straight unheaded stud portion l1, extending parallel with the major portion of the wire, inserted into one of a pair of openings 2| in the inner side of the fold l2 on the opposite end of the strip from the fold to which the headed projection of the wire is connected. The stud I! may be disengaged from its connecting fold by resilently bending or springing the body of the wire opening.

This construction enables detachable connection of a pamphlet or the like with the binder by initially removing the stud ends of the two retaining wires from connection with the engaging strip fold and swinging the two wires about their pivotal connection with the opposite fold so as to dispose the retaining elements between each side of the cover part of the pamphlet and the leaves thereof adjacent their center binding,

as disclosed at Figure 4 and thereafter connecting the stud 2.]. withthe clip. Such assembly disposes the center of the pamphlet on the center portion of the strip II between the corrugations I4 thereof to enable convenient opening or closure of the pamphlet together with the binder body. The shank and head connection of one end of each retaining element affords suitable flexibility of movement and also permanently connects the wire with. the. backing: member to obviate loss thereof.

It is to be understood that the form of' my invention herein shown and described is to betaken as. a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to: the material,

size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a binder of the character described, a binder body, a rigid backing strip removably secured to the medial portion of the body, an inwardly projecting V-shaped fold formed at each end portion of the backing strip,v each of said folds being provided with a pain of' transversely spaced apertures, a pair of resilient linear retaining elements, one end of each of said elements extending into one of the folds through the apertures therein and having a head thereon disposed within the fold to permanently connect said" end with the fold and the opposite end of each retainingv element extending into the other fold. through the apertures therein for detachably' connecting said last mentioned ends with the. other fold.
