Description
UNITED) STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OLE TILTON, OFpPITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters `:Patent No. 235,395, dated December 14, 1880. Applicationrled August 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, OLEY TILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Penn syl Vania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in`Washing-Machines; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains-to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a -perspective view of my improvement in washingm achines, representing a portion of the wash-boiler broken away for the purpose of showing the interior arrangement of the cylinder and steam-generator chambers in said boiler.` Fig. 2 is a` vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical and transverse section ofthe same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention contemplates certain improve-,
ments in that class of wash-boilers in which the clothes are washed by placing them in an open cylinder that is hung in the frame of the boiler (immersedfiin the water) and rotated by a jetv of steam and boiling water which is projected upon atscries of buckets arranged circumferenti ally around the cylinder 5 and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, andV particularly pointed Aoutin the claim.
In the drawings, Ais an ordiuary-washboiler, in which, on bearings B B,is pivoted a shaft, C, carrying cylinder D, constructed of closed ends E E and wire-netting F., At the center and around the periphery of the cylinder D is arrangeda series of inclined buckets, G. i j
In the bottom of the boiler is placed, detachably,an open-bottomed box or steam-generating chamber, whichis dividedbya transverse partition or diaphragm, i, into two compartments, I and J, each compartment being provided with an inward-opening door or valve, denoted by K and L respectively. Midway on this box is an upward-projecting spout, H, which opens up into a curved open-bottomed conductor, H', that is fastened detachably upon the wall ofthe boilerbya hooked bracket, h, by means of which the distance of the conductor from the buckets G may be varied at will to regulate the force of the jet of steam and water which is projected up through the spout H.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of this apparatus will readily be understood. The clothes to be washed are placed inside of the cylinder through a door, m, which is then properly secured, and the cylinder is placed in its bearings B B in'I the boiler, in the bottom of which the chamberI J has first been placed properlyin position. The conductor H is then, by its bracket h, fitted over the spout H and around the buckets G, when the lid is placed on the boiler, and this, with the suds and water, is placed over the re. The steam and boiling water in the chambers I J (which are con- 'stantly fed through their valves K L) are projected up through the spout H and adjustable open-bottomed conductor H into the buckets G, thus rotating the cylinder, which, with the clothes, is immersed in the boiling water and suds." By raising or lowering the conductor in respect of the buckets G the jet of steam and water maybe regulated to propel the cylinder fast or slow, as desired, according to the condition of the clothes to be washed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim -and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination .of the boiler A, detachable steam-generatin g chambers I J, having valves K L and spout H, adjustable conductor H', open on its under side, and open cylinder D, having shaft O and buckets G fitting into the open-bottomed conductor, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLE TILTON.
