Other objects of the invention are to provide an opening device of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, compact, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational view, looking at the inner side of a portion of an automobile door, showin the device inserted and engaged with the ventilator lock.
Figure 8 is a top plan view thereof, showing the door in horizontal section.
Referrin now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic rod I of suitable length and diameter. Projecting in opposite directions from the ends of the rod I and integral therewith are oppositely angled arms 2.
The arms 2 terminate, at their free ends, in reversed, integral fingers 3 which parallel the rod l. The angle portions of the arms 2 are formed to provide substantially flat plates or enlargements 4.
A portion of an automobile door is designated by reference numeral 5. The door 5 is equipped with a horizontally swinging ventilator 6 comprising a metallic frame I. A locking lever 8 secures the ventilator 6 in closed position. The locking lever 8 is releasably secured in operative or looking position through the medium of a spring-actuated latch button 9. A sealing gasket or Weatherstrip ID of resilient rubber is provided in the door 5 for the ventilator 6.
It is thought that the manner of using the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, one of the arms 2, with the portions 3 and 4 thereon, is manipulated between the ventilator frame 1 and the resilient Weatherstrip l0 and inserted in the vehicle from the outside thereof. The plate 4 is engaged with the latch button 9 and the finger 3 is engaged beneath the locking lever 8. The
instrument is then pulled outwardly for actuating the spring-pressed latch 9 to inoperative position, thus releasing the locking lever 8. The rod l is then rotated for swinging the arm 2 upwardly, thus actuating the locking lever 8 to inoperative position for releasing the ventilator 6 which, of course, may then be readily swung to open position. Ones arm may then be inserted in the vehicle through the open ventilator for unlocking the door in the usual manner. The oppositely projecting arms 2 are for the right and left hand doors of the vehicle. When one of the arms 2 is being inserted in the vehicle, the other of said arms functions as a handle for manipulating the instrument.
It is believed that the many advantages of an opening device constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of said device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. An opener for vehicle ventilators of the type including a locking lever and a retaining latch therefor, comprising a rod insertibl in the vehicle adjacent the ventilator, an arm extending laterally from one end of the rod, the arm having a wide intermediate member engageable with the latch for actuating same to inoperative position when the rod is pulled outwardly of the vehicle, an inwardly projecting element on the free endoi the arm engageable with the locking lever for actuating same to inoperative position upon rotating the rod while holding the latch released by the intermediate member of the arm, and a handle member on the other end of the rod for pulling and rotating it.
2. An opener for vehicle ventilators of the type including a locking lever and a retaining latch therefor, comprising a rod insertible in the vehicle adjacent the ventilator and having a laterally extending arm on one end, the arm having a wide intermediate portion engageable with the latch for actuating same to inoperative position when the rod is pulled outwardly of the vehicle, and a finger on the free end portion of the arm extending toward the other end of and substantially paralleling the rod, said finger being engageable beneath the lever for actuating same to inoperative position upon rotating the rod while holding the latch released by the intermediate portion of the arm, and a handle member on the other end of the rod for pulling and rotating it.
