Referring now in detail to the drawings, Iii designates a combination girdle and truss shown in the drawing on a figure II. Said article ID comprises a pair of similar, symmetrical sections I2 of textile material of generally triangular shape each having an upper edge portion I2a. just below the chest, a substantially vertical edge portion I2b at the front of the body, and a downwardly inclined edge portion I2c extending from the side of the body to the crotch. Sections I2 thus cover the abdomen region of the body. Said sections I2 are interconnected at their inner edges I2a by a vertical gusset I3, extending from the upper edge to a point above the crotch, thus terminating short of the lower ends of sections I2.
The outer edges of gusset I3 are turned in and stitched to the inner edges I 2a of sections by double seams spaced in parallel relation and the stitched together portions are provided with eyelets I6. The rows of eyelets may be laced together by a lace I'I. Gusset l3 thus forms a backing sleeve for the lacing. At the lower ends of sections I2 are strings I9 which may be tied together to provide a support beneath the testicles when the article II] is worn by a man. If used for a women, the lower ends of sections I2 may be omitted.
The girdle I further comprises a pair of similar, symmetrical sections of textile material, having edges 2I parallel to edges I2c of sections I2 and extending around the sides of the body at the hip and terminating in narrowed leg strap portions 22, each passing around the legs, beneath the buttocks, and forwardly at the crotch. The narrowed portions 22 are folded longitudinally inwardly and the meeting edges stitched together as at 23 to form a sleeve 24 open at its end nearest the section 20 from which it extends. The end of extension 22 is stitched flat to form a tab 25. Tabs 25 are each provided with two rows of eyelets 26.
The inner edges 20a are connected to edges I2c of sections II by gussets 30. The outer edges of gussets are likewise turned in and stitched to edges IZc, 20a by double lines of stitching I4, the stitched together edges being provided with rows of eyelets 32. Thus gussets 3!) form backings for the lacing 33 which interconnects eyelets 32, and also form sleeves or pockets to receive the free ends of the leg straps 22. and also to househernia pressure pads 35 as will be explained hereinafter.
Within the sleeve portion 24 of each leg strap 22 is a padding member 35. Said padding member may comprise a longitudinal bag filled with padding material 38, and having an open pocket 39 at one end so that a stick may be engaged in the pocket to push the padding into sleeve 24. The padding 35 is removable and replaceable, and facilitates washing the article I ii.
The lacing 33 may be laced through eyelets 26 in tabs 25 to attach the leg straps in adjusted position to suit the wearer.
Means is provided to strap the upper portions of girdle III to the body of the wearer. To this end there is provided a strap Ml stitched at one end 4| to the upper edge of one section I2 and extending around the back of the wearer. The free end of strap 40 may be buckled to a buckle 42 attached to the upper edge of the other section I2.
In addition there is stitched to the upper corner of each section 20 as at M, a strap 45 extending rearwardly and upwardly around an opposite shoulder of the wearer and then down the front of the wearer, the free end of said strap being attached to a buckle 46 stitched to the upper end of the opposite section I2.
The pressure pad 35 comprises a bag 50 made of a fiat piece of cloth or leather 5| and a piece of cloth or leather 52 stitched thereto at three sides leaving one end open. Piece 5| has holes 53 which may be registered with eyelets 25 in the leg straps and eyelets 32 of gussets 39 to be laced together in adjusted position by lacing 33. The pads 35 are thus received in sleeves or gussets 36 and may be laced in any desired adjusted positions in said sleeves.
' In each bag 50 is a metal spring shown in Figs. 5 and 6 to be made of a single piece of wire bent into a continuous coil of rectangular convolutions SI, with one side of said convolutions attached together by a sleeve 62 to cause the spring to assume a fan shape with rectangular arms BI extending in fan shape from said sleeve.
When inserting spring 60 into bag 50, the arms are pressed together and the sleeve end of the spring is pushed in first into the bag. The spring then opens up as much as the bag will permit and causes a resilient pressure against the hernia area of the body.
In Fig. 411 there is shown a hernia pressure pad 65 having a bag 66 made up of two V-shaped side pieces 66 interconnected by a gusset 61. Bag 66'is thus V-shaped. One end of gusset 61 has lace openings 68. In bag 66is a spring 60 the same as described above.
In Figs. l3, l4 and 15 is shown a hernia pressure pad I0 illustrating a modified construction. Pad I0 comprises a bag 'II having a central opening I2 in which is inserted a small rubber ball I2 such as children play with, or any other suitable padding'material. Bag II has tabs I3 and I4 at the ends thereof, formed with spaced open ings 13a, 14a for receiving the lacing 33.
Tab I4 is furthermore formed with a slot I5 and tab I3 with a neck I6.
Tab I3 may be passed through slot I5, the neck I6 facilitating such operation. The tabs I3, I4 may then be laced to the eyelets 32.
In Fig. 16, there is shown 2. padding device to replace ball I2. Device 80 is a rubber ball out almost through in half and then opened up. A flat piece of cardboard or wood 82 is then placed against the flat surfaces of the cut ball and attached thereto by a string 83 tied around the neck between the two substantially hemispherical portions.
In Figs. 11, 12 and 17 there is shown an article Illa similar to article I 0 except for the straps which attach the upper portion of the article to the body.
In article Illa, side sections 20 are each provided with a buckle 86 and with a pair of converging strips 81 and stitched together as at 89. Extending from the meeting portion of strips 81, 88 are a pair of straps 90 and 9|, the former being shorter than the latter. At the upper end of each section I2 is a buckle 94.
As shown in Fig. 11, each strap 90 on one side is passed around the back of the wearer and attached to buckle at the other side. Each strap 9I passes rearwardly and upwardly over an opposite shoulder and down the front of the wearer and attached to the buckle 94 at said opposite side,
As shown in Fig. 17 the straps 9! may be passed all around the body below the armsfrearwardly and then around the frontand' attaehed 'tothe buckle 94 at the same side of article l ila as the stitched end of said strap. I
If desired, the freeend of strap SKI-may be passed through the triangular opening between strips 81, 88 on an opposite side of article llla.
It will be noted that when the wearer sits the leg straps move up and loosen the girdle, but when the wearer is active the leg straps are moved down and increase the pressure of the pads on the body. 1 i I It will be further noted that the girdleor truss is only at the front of the body where it is needed,
except for the straps, thus leaving the back of the body free of constriction.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
