Description
Dec. 3', 1940. N. L. PAvEs COMBINATION DUMBBELL AND INDIAN CLUB Filed April 27, 1959 M4/7, oMfZ. Z55.
- iii I. i2: Ii. V/
Patented Dec. 3, 1940 OFFICE COMBINATIONDUMBBELL AND INDIAN CLUB Nathan L. Paves, ew York; N. Y. Application yAplilv27, 1939, Serial N 270,271 4 claims. (c1. 272-84) This invention relates to implements used in performing physical exercises, particularly in developing the muscles of the-arms,.back and hands to a high degree of efliciency.
- `In gymnasia the more common appliances are Indian clubs and dumbbells, Awhich the habitues are taught to handle scientically andy trained in many maneuvers, tending to promote good health, increase strength, inculcate gracefulness in action, and generally acquire poise in movement of a highlyv desirablenature. In the home, where room is restricted, the paraphernalia is necessarily limited in scope, and the expense usually is also considered.
Having these matters in mind,` and fully rec-` ognizing the valuable eiect of even moderate exercise, it is an object of this invention to-provide a simple appliance combining the characteristics of a club and dumbbell, so arranged that it can be metamorphosed into condition Afor use in either form.
A further feature is `in the provision of anV appliancesuited for service by persons ofeither sex and varying in age and physique, who seekl to secure the advantages derivedA by proper eX- possibly constrained to home' ercise, although practice; A l y l Another purpose is to produce an implement of inexpensive constructie admirable appearance, and capable of being changed to operate either as an Indian club or dumbbell, easily, quickly, and without the use of tools or extraneous means.
These meritorious aims are accomplished by the novel construction and arrangement of few and simple parts, hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting an important part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an embodiment of the invention assembled to represent a conventional Indian club. l
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional detail view of a removable shank handle having a rod Wrench enclosedtherein. y
Figure 4 is a View of an insertible bar by which the weight of the device may be increased.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a method of locking the shank handle to the body of the device.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the locking member.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modied form of securing the central tube in the club head before being locked therein.
Figure 8 is4 a view similar to Figure '7, showing the tube securely locked to the head.
.Reference to the drawing will show a main body,.,gener`ally designated Aby the numeral I5, of circular'cross sectionl throughout, ashaving 5 a head I 6, preferably concave at its extremity I1 and `of elliptical configuration.
An annular recess I8, in its largest diametered portion I6, has set in it a cushion ring I9,as rubber, to dull the .sound of striking objects, 10 and for the further purpose of avoiding injury to them.
A swelled handle nected by a reduced portion 25, integrally conneck 2| to the head, is similarly reduced, as at. the neck 22, and blending into an enlarged end 23, soshaped and proportioned as to substantially 4equal the weight of the head I6, when the handleV is grasped.
.'I'hese unitary elements contain an axial` bore 24 in Which is secured a tubular sleeve 25, its 20 inner end 26 corrugated or threaded to become permanently fixed in the head I6, these Velements constituting, in effect, a dumbbell.
When desired to use' the device as an Indian club,` an auxiliary handle 3U is joined to the 25 element `23 as a continuation thereof, the handle 30 having a spherical knob 3l at its outer end.
lFixed in the knob, prior to its being rigidly fastened on the handle end 30, is a bushing 32, interiorly threaded to receive the correspond- 30 ing end of a rod or clamp bolt 34, having an enlargement or head at its opposite, inner end and provided with screw threads 36 to engage Within the threads 21 of the sleeve 25, thereby to iirmly unite the handle 30 to the ele- 35 ments of the dumbbell, the effect being to produce a form of Indian club.
If more weight is desired, a bar 40 of metal, as lead, iron, etc., may be inserted into the sleeve 25 and held by its screw fitted to engage the threads 2'I In order to insert and lock outer terminal 42 is iiattened by a fork 43 formed in the enlarged end 35 of the combination bolt and wrench 34. Ob- 45 viously the bar 40 may be retracted by reverse manipulation of the element 34.
To avoid unintentional relative rotation of the handle 30 and body I5, a recess 45 is formed in the element 23 and pivoted in the recess, as by a 50 pin 46, is a detent lever 41, its longer arm 48 engageable in a groove 49 in the handle 34, and is normally held therein by virtue-of a spring 50.
One end of the spring 50 is set in an indentation 52 in the bottom of the recessL 45, to im- 55 in the sleeve.
the bar 4), its and engageable threads 4|, which are 40 l the .opening 21%. .After pingeagainst the broadened, opposite end 5I of the detent lever, a boss 53 being provided on the lever to retain the spring in operative position. Obviously, when the end of the lever, at at 5l, is pressed inwardly, it releases the arm 48, permitting relative rotary motion of the handle and body as indicated in dash dot lines in Figure 5;
Referring to Figures '7 and 8 showing a modied formv of securing the sleeve 25 within the bore 2li. Itis obviously very essential to retain the sleeve 25 securely vwithin the upper portion of the club l5 'to prevent the accidental disengagement of the club from' the handle 34 attached to the tube 25 while 'the clubl is b'i'iig swung'or otherwise being used for exercising. rIhis is accomplished by forming a plurality of` tongues in the end 6| of the sleeve 25. These tongues f are preferably forn'idlwith hook-lile`" elements $2 and are pressed inwardly, as shown in Figure 7 when the sleeve 25 is inserted it' the sleeve has been l'ocated in its properv place within the opening l2li,
a.,plungerxtype-too1 63 is inserted in the sleeve 25, and forced against the inwardly bent tongue Bil, thereby spreading the tongues and forcing theirhook-like elements 62 into the wall ofthe bore 24, in the head l, thus securely locking the .sleeve 25 within the vclub member l5. Y
It is to beunderstood that` all kparts are suit-r ablyV nished and when .assembled present smooth surfaces, the vdetent lever elements being flush and level with the surfaces in whichthey are set. i l
From the foregoing it will be seen that an effec*- tive',l double purpose,A exercising appliance has been disclosed inthe preferred form of itsY embodiment, but it is to be understood that changes may be made in form, proportions and in such 'minor details as maycome within the scope of Having 'thus described the invention,
the appended claims. 1
