This invention relates to a scale pencil holder and `the primary object of the invention is to provide a pencil holder `in combination with linear scales `for use on maps or the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide a new and useful scale `pencil holder from a unitary blank of metal, which permits the pencil holder to be easily and cheaply manufactured and at the same time provides one of durable construction.
Another object of my invention is to provide a scale pencil holder including means on each end of the holder for readily and removably fastening a pencil or the like thereto, and an indicator for ready identiiication of the proper scale to be used on a map or the like.
With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists in features of construction, arrangement and operation of parts which Will hereinafter appear. For purposes of illustration the invention Will be described and claimed With reference to the accompanying drawing, in which like numbers distinguish like parts and in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cut blank from which the pencil holder is formed;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a locking sleeve used in carrying out the invention; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the invention bent into form from the blank illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the illustrated embodiment characterizing the invention, a substantially rectangular elongated strip or blank I of resilient material such as sheet metal is provided from which the pencil holder is formed.
The strip or blank l is provided intermediate its ends 2 and 2 with a central body portion 3, which is reduced in width at its ends as illustrated at 4 and 5. On each of the ends 2 and 2' of the blank are four elongated substantially rectangular shaped prongs or fingers 6 and 6', respectively, Which project longitudinally outward in parallel relation to each other from the ends 4 and 5 of the body portion 3 of the blank. The fingers 6 and 6' are formed by cutting out three longitudinal slits 'l and 1', respectively, on each end of the blank, the opposite slits 1 and 1 being aligned so that the fingers B and 6' are opposed to each other. The longitudinal axis 8 (Which may be scored) of the opposed slits 'l and 1', divide the body portion 3 into four sections 9. The alternate (a) isof 1/20,000 in miles and parts thereof, scale (b) is of 1/20,000 in 1000's of yards and parts 10 thereof, scale (c) is `of 1/62,500 in miles and parts thereof, scale (d) is of 1/62,500 in 1000s of yards and parts thereof, scale (c) is of l/2l,120 in miles and parts thereof, scale (f) is of 1/21,120 in l000s of yards and parts thereof, and scales (g) and (h) 15 are of inches from zero to 6, graduated in tenths. The scales are so arranged on the blank as to provide a sacle on each of the side edges of the fingers 6 and 6', the scales on one of the side edges of the fingers being reversed from the scales on 2O the other side edges thereof. The scales (a) and (b) extend longitudinally along the outer edges of the body portion 3 of the blank and the other scales extend across the body portion adjacent to the opposite edges of the longitudinal axis 2f 8 of the opposite slits l and 'i'.
To form the blank l into a pencil holder, one of the sections 9 of the body portion 3 is bent along the longitudinal axis 8 of the opposed slits adjacent thereto and at a right angle to its adja- 30 cent section, which is in turn 'bent at a right angle toits adjacent section and the third section is bent at a right angle to the remaining section, thereby causing the body portion 3 and the fingers 6 and 6 to assume the shape illustrated in Fig. 4, 35 the body portion 3 and the ngers 6 and 6 forming a four-sided device Which is polygonal in cross section, with a scale on each side edge thereof, whereby When the pencil holder is laid on a support it will be held against a rolling movement. The lingers 6 and 6 provide a portion on each end of the holder for engaging a pencil or the like. A locking sleeve H, which is polygonal in cross section and provided with an indicating mark I2, as. illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, is slidably 45 and rotatably mounted on each end of the pencil holder.
To use the pencil holder as illustrated in Fig. 4, the flanged ends Il! and lll of the resilient ngers 6 and 6 are depressed, thereby permitting the 5o sleeves Il to be placed on the ends 2 and 2', respectively, of the holder or to be removed therefrom. The sleeves Il are slid toward the body portion 3 of the holder to permit a pencil I3 or the like to be inserted in each end thereof, the 55 sleeves are then slid outwardly toward the outer ends of the holder, whereby the resilient ngers 6 and 6 are forced against the pencils to frictionally hold them securely in place Within the ends of the holder. The flanges I0 and I0 on the outer ends of the opposed ngers 6 and 6 prevent the sleeves H from slipping 01T of the ends of the holder. By depressing the flanged ends i0 and IB of the fingers 5 and 6 the sleeves Il may be rotated or turned on the holder, thus changing the position of the indicator I2 for reading identification of the proper scale to be used in Working a problem on a map or the like. It Will thus be seen by the above description that I have provided a pencil holder With scales common to maps now in use, whereby measurements may be readily made without changing from pencils to linear scales and that the reading of the scales and the recording of the results thereof may be performed in one operation. Also the pencil holder is adapted to be formed of an integral metallic blank. An indicating means on the sleeves for readily identifying the proper scale to be used in Working a problem on a map is also included within the scope of the invention.
Even though I have herein described my invention as comprising certain details of construction, it is nevertheless to be understood that various changes may be made therein, such as by forming the pencil holder with other shapes than disclosed and that various types of scales or other material in lieu of scales may be employed Without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and Wish to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A holder for Writing implements comprising a split tubular body of resilient material having one end formed with a plurality of lingers and capable of freely receiving a Writing implement, a locking sleeve slidably mounted on said fingers and means on certain of said lingers for retaining said locking sleeve thereon.
2. A holder for Writing implements comprising a split tubular body of resilient material having one end formed With a plurality of fingers and capable of freely receiving a Writing implement, a locking sleeve slidably mounted on said fingers and flanges on the outer end of certain of said fingers for retaining said locking sleeve thereon. 3. A holder for Writing implements comprising a split tubular body of resilient material polygonal in cross-section having one end formed With a plurality of substantially rectangular shaped ngers and capable of freely receiving a Writing implement, a locking sleeve bearing an indication mark and polygonal in cross-section slidably mounted on said fingers, and flanges on the outer end of certain of said fingers for retaining said sleeve thereon.
