Description
Aug. 8, 1939 c. w. BEARDSLEY MADE-UP HANDKERCHIEF Filed June 18, 1958 In venior amardsie A ftorneys Patented Aug. 8, 193
STATES 1 Claim.
This invention relates to made-up handkerchiefs for men or ladies use to be worn exposed from a pocket of a garment, and has for the primary object the provision of an efiicient and inexpensive device of this character which may be readily inserted in a pocket with a portion protruding therefrom, giving the appearance of a folded handkerchief of the conventional type, the construction of the device being such that it will remain properly positioned in the pocket during all the various movements of thewearer and may be laundered when soiled or mussed without affecting the device in any way, the device when in the pocket will not bulge the garment and eliminates time wasted in the folding of an ordinary handkerchief.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a made-up handkerchief constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the opposite side of the handkerchief.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure l. I
Figure 4 is a plan view illustrating a blank from which one of the points of the made-up handkerchief is constructed from.
Figure 5 isa diagrammatical view showing several of the blanks associated and folded to form a plurality of points representing the folded handkerchief.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 6 indicates a portion of substantially rectangular shape which may be readily inserted in a pocket of a garment and has secured thereto a part 1 representing or giving the appearance of a folded handkerchief consisting of a series of pointed portions 8, some of which parallel each other while another is folded about the other portions 8, as clearly shown in Figure l. The portions 8 are left protruding from the pocket and the portion 6 fitting within the pocket maintains the portions 8 properly positioned to give the effect of a folded handkerchief. The portions 8 are constructed from any fabric suitable for the purpose and may have applied thereto any selected design and color. Each portion 8 is made from a blank 9 of rectangular shape which is folded upon itself on the line l0 making each portion of substantially triangular shape, as clearly shown in Figure 5. The triangular shaped portions may be grouped in various relations to each other to present different folded handkerchiefs.
The portion 6 has a certain amount of rigid, ity so that it can be easily inserted and removed from the pocket without bending and consists of a backing strip ll having a covering ll of a material corresponding to the portions 8. The covering I2 is stitched together as illustrated by the stitching I3. The stitching l3 extends along the upper edge of the portion 6 and also along one of the vertical edges thereof. The backing strip H is made from a; material commonly known as buckram. A material of this kind may be starched or will readily take starch during the laundering of the device so as to give the portion 6 the desired stiffness.
A device of the character described can be easily inserted in the pocket without bulging the walls of the pocket and with the portions 8 protruding from the pocket will give the effect of a folded handkerchief, eliminating the necessity of folding a conventional type handkerchief and placing the same in the pocket with the chances of its becoming lost from the pocket or disarranged through the movements of the wearer. The-portion 6 snugly fits the walls of the pocket of the garment, consequently maintaining the device in proper position and against accidental displacement.
An article of the character set forth can be cheaply manufactured and sold at a low cost and will be durable, easily laundered when soiled or mussed.
It is believed that the foregoing description when taken in connection with the drawing will fully set forth the construction and advantages of the present invention to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates, that further detailed description will not be required.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A made-up handkerchief comprising a substantially rectangular shaped stiffening strip, a cover for said strip and cooperating therewith in forming a portion to be inserted in .a pocket of a garment with frictional engagement with walls of the pocket, a plurality of folded portions giving the appearance of a folded handkerchief extending into the cover and stitched to said cover and the stiffening strip, each of said secondnamed portions being made from a blank of material of substantially rectangular shape and folded from one corner to its diagonal corner providing said second-named portion of triangular shape, said folded portions having the pointed ends thereof arranged in stepped formation and one of said folded portions extending around edges of the other folded portions.
CLARENCE W. BEARDSLEY.
