POCKET PYROPHOIG LIGHTER Filed July 27, 1937 PLQ-Lf INVENTOR ARTHUR GoLQoERGER mi. n
ATTORNEYS rammed June 13, 1939 PATENT OFFICE i y \2,1s2,s45
Poom-:r rraornomo Lroarrnal Arthur Goldberger, Vienna, Austria, assigner to Arnold Liebling, Rockford, Ill.
Application July 27, 1937, Serial No. 155,848 l 2 claims. (ci. s7'1.1
@This invention relates to a pocket pyrophoric lighter, of the type in which the operation of an actuating member brings -about, in succession the `opening of the cover normally fitting closely over the inflammable wick of the lighter, and rotation of the friction wheel co-acting with a pyrophorous body to produce the igniting spark, and consists `essentially in so mounting the said I `cover 'and coupling the same with the moving parts of the actuating mechanism that, in opening, the cover is rst moved axially with respect to the position of the wick in the lighter and then laterally and outwards. In this manner, as compared with the known types of pyrophoric lighter with merely pivoted cover, the result is achieved `that when the cover is closed the'extinguisher tstightly over the end of the wick holder or tube, while when the cover is open the whole of the space above the ame is free and untrammeled. l. l
, In accordance with the invention the cover is mounted on a vertical rod which is guided, by means of a guide pin, in a groove in a sleeve, and coupled with the actuating member by a lever arrangement which lifts it out of the sleeve, so
thatit is first lifted clear of the wick and 'then swung outwards through an angle of about 90. A form of construction of lighter according to the invention is shown, on a magnified scale, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in
which:
Fig. 1 shows the lighter according to the invention in side elevation, in lthe closed condition with the side wall broken away to disclose the actuating mechanism'. f Fig. 2 shows Vthe same in plan view. Fig. 3 shows the same lighter in the open condition, as after operation;` again in side elevation with the near side wall for the' greater part broken away. w
Fig.v4 is a plan view of ,the open lighter.
Referring to the.drawing, in which like parts tionconsists, in a known manner, of a housing or casing part I in "the interior of which is stowed l the `fuel tank 2 which is generally lled with wadding or the like, and from which the wick 3 extends loosely out of a small conical extension 4. The spring-loaded stick of pyrophorous material 5 is guided in a tubular holder extending from the bottom to the top of the fuel tank, and bears against the friction wheel 6 mounted on top of the tank. The side walls 1, 11 of the casing Iextend beyond theend of the wick, and are provided with air admission apertures 8, and thus serve to protect the flame from wind. Adjacent the fuel tank 2 and extending along the side wall of the casing there is disposed a round section tube II) having at the lower end a slot I)` which is rst 5 straight and then, further up, of helical shape. Into this tube there is `inserted a round section rod I2 which is provided at the lower end on each side with a guide pin II, and to the upper end of Vwhich there is secured the cover I3 ofA the 10 lighter, the said pins II being adapted to engage in the slot 9 in the tube III. On the under side of the cover I3 there is secured the extinguisher I44 which is soA dimensioned that, when the cover is in the closed condition, the extinguisher not 15 only reaches down to the top of the tank 2 but also fits closely against the conical surface of the extension 4 on this tank. f
In place of a front wall to the casing there is athumb piece 23 which is pivoted at the lower-A m most point lli` between the two casing side walls 1, 1'1, and which is stressedby a spring I5 tending to force it outwards. The upper end of the thumb piece 23 is lbent over inwards at an angle and provided on either side with a pin I8. These pins I8 u' wardly extending rack 25 which meshes Iwith a pinion 24 .coupled for rotation with the friction wheels. g 35 The mode of operation of the described pyrol phoric lighter is as follows: When the cover I3 is closed (that is to say when the lighter is'in the inoperative condition) the thumb piece `23 juts out somewhat beyond the'icontour of the lighter (see Fig. 1), the vertical rod I2 on which the cover I3 is mounted is in the completely lowered l position, and the pins I I are at the bottom of the slot 9. I'o operate the lighter the thumb piece 23 is pressed inwards (Fig..2) against the action of 45 Y the spring I6. 'I'hrough the intermediary' of the pin I8 the lever 20 is thereby tilted so that its .other end movesupwards. This movement is imy parted tothe link22 which begins by lifting the rod I2 and with itthe cover I3, and that as long 50 as the pin I I on the rod I2 travels inthe vstraight 'portionof the slots 9. As soon as the stud I I rengages in the helical portion of the slot 9 the rod I2 and with it the cover I3 becomes rotated through j (Fig.` 4). Previously, namely at the u beginning o: th movement of the thumb piece Il, the rack It on the thumb piece engages in i the pinion Il, rotating this latter and with it the friction wheel l, with the result .that sparks are generated which igniteA the uncovered wick. As long as the thumb piece Il remains in the pressed-in position the cover I3 remains open When the thumb piece 28 is released it is returned by the spring It into its initial position, all the other parts vof ,the mechanism being thereby also restored into theiroriginal positions.
I claim:
1. In a pyrophoric lighter having an innamrnable wick and a, pyrophorous body, a over enclosing said inflammable wick in the closed position of the lighter, `a. friction wheel bearing against said pyrophorous body, a movable actuating member and means connected with said member, said cover and said friction wheel and operable upon the actuation of said member to first move said cover axially in respect to the posi- -tlon of the wick ln the lighter, then move said cover laterally outwardsto its open position and then rotate said friction wheel to cause the production -of an igniting spark.
2. In a pyrophoric lighter having aninilammable wick and a pyrophorous body, a cover enclosing said inflammable wick inl the closed position of the lighter, a friction wheel bearing against said pyrophorous body, a movable actuatingl member, a rod connected with said cover, a
