Abstract

In one aspect, the present disclosure provides a makeup brush, a makeup brush. The makeup brush may include a handle and a brush portion secured to a forward end of the handle. The brush portion may include a plurality of bristles extending from the forward end of the handle and forming a first protuberance, a second protuberance, and a depression area between the first protuberance and the second protuberance. The first protuberance may define a first surface area, the depression area may define a second surface area, and the second protuberance may define a third surface area. From the perspective of the forward end of the handle, the first surface area may be convex, the second surface area may be concave, and the third surface area may be convex.

Description

TECHNICAL FIELD

The present disclosure relates generally to a makeup brush, and more particularly, to a makeup brush with a tuft or bristle profile for the simultaneous application of two makeup types to a specific area of a human face.

BACKGROUND

A makeup brush is a tool typically used during the application of makeup or another cosmetic product to human skin, such as on a human face. Typically, a makeup brush will include a plastic or wooden handle secured to a brush portion. The brush portion typically includes many long and flexible bristles made of natural or synthetic materials.
Often, more than one type of makeup is applied to the human face during a makeup application procedure. For example, a user may apply what is generally called a highlighter makeup (with a relatively light color) to certain areas of the face and a contour makeup (with a relatively dark color) to other areas of the face. Typically, one makeup type is applied first and then the second makeup type is applied later during a separate step and with a separate brush. A third brush may be used to blend the two makeup types together.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

In one aspect, the present disclosure provides a makeup brush. The makeup brush may include a handle and a brush portion secured to a forward end of the handle. The brush portion may include a plurality of bristles extending from the forward end of the handle and forming a first protuberance, a second protuberance, and a depression area between the first protuberance and the second protuberance. The first protuberance may define a first surface area, the depression area may define a second surface area, and the second protuberance may define a third surface area. From the perspective of the forward end of the handle, the first surface area may be convex, the second surface area may be concave, and the third surface area may be convex.
The second surface area may be configured for an application of a cosmetic product to an area of a human face corresponding to a cheekbone.
A ferrule may secure the forward end of the handle to the brush portion.
A distance between an apex of the first protuberance and an apex of the second protuberance may be between about 2 cm and about 4 cm.
A thickness of the brush portion may be at least 1 cm.
A maximum length of the plurality of bristles may be at least 1.5 cm.
The first surface area may be configured for an application of a first makeup type, and the second surface area may be configured for an application of a second makeup type.
At least a portion of the plurality of bristles may extend outwardly at an angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the handle to obtain a desirable working end thickness of brush portion.
The depression area may be depressed at least 1 mm with respect to an apex of the first protuberance.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Various aspects are described below with reference to the drawings, and several of the elements are identified by numerals. The relationship and functioning of the various elements may better be understood by reference to the following description. However, aspects are not limited to those illustrated in the drawings or explicitly described below. The drawings are not necessarily to scale, and in certain instances, details may have been omitted that are not necessary for an understanding of aspects disclosed herein.
In this application, the use of the disjunctive is intended to include the conjunctive. The use of definite or indefinite articles is not intended to indicate cardinality. In particular, a reference to “the” object or “a or an” object is intended to denote also one of a possible plurality of such objects.
A front view of a makeup brush 100 is shown in FIG. 1, and a side view of the brush 100 is shown in FIG. 2. Referring to FIGS. 1-2, the makeup brush 100 may include a handle 102, a ferrule 104, and a brush portion 106. The brush portion 106 may be secured to and extend from a forward end 108 of the ferrule 104, and the handle 102 may be secured to and disposed within a rearward end 110 of the ferrule 104. In some embodiments, the handle 102 may include a relatively thin front end portion (not shown) which may be partially received in or otherwise engaged with the rearward end 110 of the ferrule 104. The cross-section of the handle 102 may be sized to facilitate a holding of the makeup brush 100 with a user's fingers, and may be approximately 1.5 cm in diameter in a non-limiting exemplary embodiment. Optionally (and not shown), the handle 102 may be tapered such that a central portion 112 has a larger cross-section than the rear end portion 114. Without limitation, the handle 102 and/or the ferrule 104 may be circular, ovular, or rectangular in cross-section.
The brush portion 106 may include a construction defined by a plurality of bristles. While not shown, it is contemplated that the bristles may be organized in distinct groups or tufts, but this is not required. The bristles of the brush portion 106 may be cut (or otherwise extend) to different lengths such that the brush portion 106 has a specific geometry. In the depicted embodiment, for example, the bristles of the brush portion 106 are organized such that the brush portion 106 includes a first protuberance 116, a second protuberance 118, and a depression area 120 therebetween. The first protuberance 116, the second protuberance 118, and the depression area 120 may have curved profiles that match a specific area of a human face, such as an area on or near a cheekbone (as described in more detail below). The brush portion 106 may have any other suitable geometry.
The brush portion 106 of FIG. 1 may be configured (e.g., shaped and sized) for the application of one or more makeup types to a specific area of a human face. For example and referring to FIG. 3, during a typical makeup application procedure, a first type of makeup is often applied to a first area 202 of the face located just above a cheekbone. The first makeup type may be what is commonly referred to as highlighter makeup and may have a color that is relatively light. A second type of makeup, typically called contour makeup, may be relatively dark in color when compared to the highlighter makeup and typically may be applied to a second area 204 of the face located on the cheekbone, for example. Like the first area 202, a third area 206 located below the cheekbone may typically be painted with highlighter makeup. In combination, the highlighter makeup and the contour makeup may enhance the appearance of the face by accentuating the characteristics of the cheekbone.
Referring back to FIGS. 1-2, the brush portion 106 may have specific surface areas for the application of specific makeup types. As shown in FIG. 1, a first surface area 122 may be located on the first protuberance 116, a second surface area 124 may be located within the depression area 120, and a third surface area 126 may be located on the second protuberance 118. As shown, from the perspective located on the forward end 108 of the ferrule 104 and/or the handle 102, the first surface area 122 may be convex, the second surface area 124 may be concave, and the third surface area 126 may be convex, as shown. During makeup application, a first makeup type (e.g., a highlighter makeup) may be placed on the first surface area 122 and the third surface area 126, and a second makeup type (e.g., a contour makeup) may be placed on the second surface area 124. It is also contemplated that a third makeup type may be included (and placed on the third surface area 126 as an alternative to the first makeup type, for example). Then, with one or more strokes of the brush 100, the different makeup types can be placed on the face in their desired location. The brush 100 may therefore be advantageous when compared to traditional makeup brushes where makeup types (such as highlighter makeup and contour makeup) must be applied separately. Further, since the different makeup types may be applied at once and may run together and/or overlap where the above-specified surface areas of the brush portion 106 meet, blending may occur without a separate step.
The brush portion 106 may have particular dimensions specifically for application of a cosmetic material, such as highlighter makeup and contour makeup (or other makeup types), on or near the cheekbone of a human face. For example, the distance between an apex of the first protuberance 116 and an apex of the second protuberance 118 may be between about 2 cm and about 4 cm, and may be about 2.5 cm in an exemplary embodiment. The overall width at its widest point may be between about 2.5 cm and about 7 cm, such as about 4.2 cm. The depression area 120 may be depressed approximately 1 mm to approximately 5 mm, such as about 3 mm, with respect to an apex of at least one of the first protuberance 116 and the second protuberance 118, for example. A maximum length of the plurality of bristles, measured from the forward end of the ferrule to a terminus of the makeup brush, may be at least 1.5 cm, such as about 2.5 cm, for example. A maximum thickness of the brush portion, measured in a plane perpendicular to a plane passing through both protuberances (e.g., measured across the brush portion 106 from the perspective of FIG. 2), may be at least 1 cm, such as about 1.4 cm. The relatively large thickness of 1.4 cm (with respect to other brushes) may be advantageous for the amount of makeup or other cosmetic material the brush portion 106 is capable of holding and/or for comfort purposes.
A shape or geometry of the forward end 108 of the ferrule 104 may determine the direction of extension of the bristles. For example, in FIG. 2, portions of the forward end 108 of the ferrule 104 may be angled relative to a longitudinal axis extending through the handle 102 and the ferrule 104. As a consequence, at least a portion of the bristles may extend outwardly at an angle to obtain a desirable working end thickness of brush portion 106. Some bristles (for example, those extending from near a center of the forward end 108) may be substantially parallel to the above-mentioned longitudinal axis. Additionally or alternatively, the bristles of the brush portion 106 may be compressed together near the forward end 108 of the ferrule 104 and then may fan outward as they extend towards the terminus of the brush 100.
To secure the handle 102 to the ferrule 104, the rearward end 110 of the ferrule 104 may be crimped or glued to the front portion of the handle 102. In exemplary embodiments, the rearward end 110 of the ferrule 104 may be of substantially cylindrical form with a slightly larger diameter than that of the thinner front portion (not shown) of the handle 102 to fittingly engage the front portion of the handle 102. The ferrule 104 may be formed of a thin sheet of metal rolled into the cylindrical form, or may already be a thin metallic cylinder, for example. Preferably, a composition of the ferrule 104 is stainless steel for desirable strength and durability and in order to minimize any possibility of allergic reactions by the user. The ferrule 104 may be flattened into a substantially ovular or rectangular cross-sectional shape (or another shape) in proximity of forward end 108 to a thickness appropriate to securely hold desired brush portion 106. Further, all the bristles may be secured and anchored as a bundle or a plurality of bundles via their root ends (not shown) in the ferrule 104. These root ends may additionally or alternatively be bonded together by a suitable adhesive, such as epoxy or other suitable adhesive, to form at least one bristle knot upon hardening of the adhesive. Once cured or hardened in the ferrule 104, the adhesive may not only be adhered to the bristles but also to an interior surface of ferrule 104 to provide desirable securement. The bristles may be of any suitable synthetic, natural, or combination of materials. In some embodiments, a working end of the bristles may be coated with a material suitable for temporary bonding to a makeup type.
The brush 100 of FIGS. 1-2 may be included in a kit with a base 300 shown in FIG. 3. The base 300 may be configured for holding one or more makeup types. The base 300 may have, for example, a first compartment 302 for holding a first makeup type, a second compartment 304 for holding a second makeup type, and a third compartment 306 for holding a third makeup type (or, alternatively, for holding the first makeup type or the second makeup type). The compartments may be distinct and isolated from one another. Alternatively, the compartments may not be distinct and the makeup in the base 300 may be blended together, which may be advantageous for facilitating the application of two or more pre-blended makeup types. In an exemplary embodiment, the first compartment 302 and the third compartment 306 may hold a highlighter makeup and the second compartment 304 may hold a contour makeup. The base 300 may be designed for one-time use (e.g., disposable upon a makeup type running out), or may be fillable and/or refillable. A fillable base 300 may be advantageous for allowing a wide range of specific makeup combinations (e.g., specific color combinations) when the makeup types can be purchased separately.
The profile of the compartments of the base 300 may correspond with the profile of the brush portion 106 of FIG. 1. As such, when the base sits flat, the second compartment 304 may extend higher than the other compartments such that the second compartment 304 may receive by the depressed area 120 of the brush 100 of FIG. 1. The first compartment 302 and the second compartment 304 may sit relatively low such that they may properly receive the first protuberance 116 and the second protuberance 118 of the brush, respectively. Advantageously, the base 300 may allow the brush 100 to pick up more than one type of makeup in an efficient manner during dual makeup application.
Specific embodiments of a makeup brush have been described for the purpose of illustrating the manner in which the aspects of the present disclosure are used. It should be understood that the implementation of other variations and modifications of the embodiments described herein and their various aspects will be apparent to one skilled in the art, and that the invention is not limited by the specific embodiments described.

Claims

We claim:

1. A makeup brush, the makeup brush comprising:

a handle; and

a brush portion secured to a forward end of the handle, the brush portion including a plurality of bristles extending from the forward end of the handle and forming a first protuberance, a second protuberance, and a depression area between the first protuberance and the second protuberance,

wherein the first protuberance defines a first surface area, wherein the depression area defines a second surface area, and wherein the second protuberance defines a third surface area,

wherein from the perspective of the forward end of the handle, the first surface area is convex, the second surface area is concave, and the third surface area is convex.

2. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein the second surface area is configured for an application of a cosmetic product to an area of a human face corresponding to a cheekbone.

3. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein a ferrule secures the forward end of the handle to the brush portion.

4. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein a distance between an apex of the first protuberance and an apex of the second protuberance is between about 2 cm and about 4 cm.

5. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein a thickness of the brush portion is at least about 1 cm.

6. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein a maximum length of the plurality of bristles is at least about 1.5 cm.

7. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein the first surface area is configured for an application of a first makeup type, and wherein the second surface area is configured for an application of a second makeup type.

8. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of bristles extend outwardly at an angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the handle to obtain a desirable working end thickness of brush portion.

9. The makeup brush of claim 1, wherein the depression area is depressed at least 1 mm with respect to an apex of the first protuberance.

10. A makeup brush, the makeup brush comprising:

a ferrule with a forward end and a rear end;

a handle secured to the rear end of the ferrule; and

a brush portion secured to the forward end of the ferrule, the brush portion including a plurality of bristles extending from the forward end of the ferrule and forming a first protuberance, a second protuberance, and a depression area between the first protuberance and the second protuberance,

wherein a distance between an apex of the first protuberance and an apex of the second protuberance is between about 2 cm and about 4 cm, and

wherein the first protuberance defines a first surface area, wherein the depression area defines a second surface area, and wherein the second protuberance defines a third surface area.

11. The makeup brush of claim 10, wherein the depression area is depressed at least 1 mm with respect to an apex of the first protuberance.

12. The makeup brush of claim 10, wherein a thickness of the brush portion is at least about 1 cm.

13. The makeup brush of claim 10, wherein a maximum length of the plurality of bristles, measured from the forward end of the ferrule to a terminus of the makeup brush, is at least about 1.5 cm.

14. The makeup brush of claim 10, wherein the first surface area is configured for an application of a first makeup type, and wherein the second surface area is configured for an application of a second makeup type.

15. The makeup brush of claim 10, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of bristles extend outwardly at an angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the handle to obtain a desirable working end thickness of brush portion.

16. A makeup kit, the makeup kit comprising:

a brush having a brush portion formed by a plurality of bristles, the brush portion including a first protuberance, a second protuberance, and a depression area between the first protuberance and the second protuberance; and

a base having a first compartment, a second compartment, and a third compartment, the second compartment being located between the first compartment and the third compartment,

wherein the second compartment is raised with respect to the first compartment and the third compartment such that the second compartment is configured to receive the depressed area of the brush and such that the first compartment is configured to receive at least one of the first protuberance and the second protuberance of the brush.

17. The makeup kit of claim 16, wherein a distance between an apex of the first protuberance and an apex of the second protuberance is between about 2 cm and about 4 cm.

18. The makeup kit of claim 16, wherein the depression area is depressed at least 1 mm with respect to an apex of the first protuberance.

19. The makeup kit of claim 16, wherein a thickness of the brush portion is at least about 1 cm.

20. The makeup kit of claim 16, wherein a maximum length of the plurality of bristles, is at least about 1.5 cm.
