Description
- The present disclosure relates to cases and backpacks for carrying scooters.
- Freestyle scootering is an increasingly popular action sport. There are several freestyle scooter competitions and exhibitions held annually in which participants engage in stylized riding and a variety of tricks. In addition, riders use scooters for exercise and recreation in parks, city streets, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. Scooters are also becoming more popular as a mode of urban transportation.
- As more people participate in leisure scooter activity and organized events and use scooters for transportation purposes, a need has arisen for a convenient way to carry and transport scooters. In particular, many public facilities such as schools, retail stores and other public buildings are reluctant to allow people to enter if they are openly carrying a scooter. Securely stowing the scooter in a bag would alleviate this problem in most cases. However, there are very few existing bags or carrying cases designed to hold scooters, and most freestyle scooters are quite bulky and often are not easily collapsible. Thus, there is a need for a convenient bag designed to carry a freestyle scooter.
- Some backpacks for carrying and transporting skateboards or inline skates are currently available. They typically include a holder for the sporting good that consists of a simple flap attached to the backpack body. The holder sometimes includes buckles to attach the flap to the body of the backpack. However, these backpacks have some significant disadvantages. Because there is no solid connection or closure on the sides of the holder, the skateboard or other sporting good is not held securely and may shift and move around when the user is waling. Another disadvantage is that the flap looks unattractive when not being used to carry the sporting good.
- Accordingly, there is a need for a carrying case or backpack that is specifically designed to hold a freestyle scooter. More particularly, there is a need for a backpack with a holder that can securely house and transport a freestyle scooter and also looks attractive when not in use.
- The present disclosure, in its many embodiments, alleviates to a great extent the disadvantages of known sporting good carrying bags by providing a backpack that includes a holder panel assembly with side walls that forms a scooter storage compartment and is convertible between an open position and a partially closed position. In addition, a closure device secures the stem of the scooter handlebar assembly, and a side pocket may also be provided to house the stem.

Ahead tube 120 is fixedly attached to theneck 116, which serves to operatively connect thedeck 112 to the front wheel and the handlebar assemblies. Theneck 116 may be integrally formed with thedeck 112 such that thedeck 112 andneck 116 are a single machined component. Alternatively, theneck 116 andhead tube 120 may be integrally formed as a single component. Theneck 116 andhead tube 120 may be made of various metals, plastic, carbon fiber, or other materials that impart sufficient structural strength but are not so heavy that they compromise maneuverability of the scooter. -
Steer tube 122 has atop portion 124 and abottom portion 126 and extends through thehead tube 120.Front fork 128 is movably coupled to thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 and has afront wheel 130 coupled thereto viafront wheel axle 132. At thetop portion 124 of the front fork 128 ahandlebar assembly 134 is attached, providinghandles handlebar assembly 134 causes steertube 122 to turn thefront fork 128 andfront wheel 130. Abrake 108 may be fixedly attached to or integrally formed with arear end 135 ofdeck 112, which also has arear wheel 131 coupled thereto via arear wheel axle 133. Therear wheel 131 may be turnable or a fixed position wheel. - In operation, the user has at least two options for carrying a
scooter 100 withbackpack apparatus 1. Disclosed embodiments of thebackpack apparatus 1 facilitate secure carriage of a fully assembled scooter and, if desired, secure carriage of a partially disassembled scooter in which the steer tube has been separated from the deck assembly of the scooter. As mentioned above, thescooter storage compartment 50 is convertible between an open configuration suitable for carrying a fully assembled scooter and a partially closed configuration for carrying a partially disassembled scooter. - With reference to
FIGS. 8 and 9 , operation of the backpack apparatus to carry a fully assembled scooter will now be described. First, the user fully unzips thefirst zipper assembly 56 a so thezipper assembly 56 a is in the fully open position. This creates a first side opening 52 defined by thefirst side wall 46 of theholder panel assembly 12 forming the top of theside opening 52, thefirst side edge 38 of theholder panel 13, and thefirst side portion 22 of thebackpack body 10. Similarly, the user then fully unzips thesecond zipper assembly 56 b so a second side opening 54 is defined by the second side wall 48 of theholder panel assembly 12 forming the top of the second side opening 54, thesecond side edge 40 of theholder panel 13, and thesecond side portion 22 of thebackpack body 10. Thus, the user has created the two opposingside openings scooter storage compartment 50 on opposite sides of theholder panel 13, thereby converting thescooter storage compartment 50 to the open configuration. The user may unfastenbuckle 39 offront securing strap 37 to prepare for inserting thescooter 100. The user may also unfastenbuckles strap apparatus holder panel 13 from thebackpack body 10. - Then the user inserts the
scooter 100 into thescooter storage compartment 50 of thebackpack apparatus 1 by sliding the scooter deck assembly 110 through the first side opening 52 of thescooter storage compartment 50. More particularly, the user slides the scooter deck assembly 110 in rear end first by inserting therear wheel 131 first so that therear wheel 131 andrear end 135 ofdeck 112 are disposed through thefirst side opening 52. The user continues to slide thescooter 100 through so therear wheel 131 andrear end 135 ofdeck 112 extend through the second side opening 54 of thescooter storage compartment 50. In exemplary embodiments, the user extendsfront securing strap 37 around therear end 135 of thescooter 100 and fastensbuckle 39 to further secure therear end 135 of thescooter 100. The user may then fasten thebuckles strap apparatus holder panel 13 to thebackpack body 10 and may tighten the straps as necessary to further secure thescooter 100. - As best seen in
FIG. 8 , a significant portion of the scooter deck assembly 110 should be disposed within thescooter storage compartment 50 and rest at the bottom of the compartment. Thefront wheel 130 andfront fork 128 will extend out of thefirst side opening 52 and thesteer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134 will extend upward adjacent thefirst side portion 22 of thebackpack body 10. - At this point, the user can employ the
closure device 60 to secure thesteer tube 122 of thescooter 100. To do this, the user unfastens themating portion 66 from themating piece 68 of theclosure device 60 and holds theband 62 open. The user then places thescooter steer tube 122 up against thefirst side portion 22 of thebackpack body 10 adjacent themating piece 68 of theclosure device 60. Next, the user stretches theband 62 around thescooter steer tube 122 and fastens themating portion 66 to themating piece 68 to create a tight connection so the scooter steer tube is snugly held by theclosure device 60. The user can also use thereleasable strap 29 onshoulder strap 28 b to securescooter handlebar 136 b to theshoulder strap 28 so thehandlebar assembly 134 does not swing around when carried. The user would extend thereleasable strap 29 aroundhandlebar 136 b and close using the velcro fastening material. Advantageously, the additional connections between theholder panel 13 and thebackpack body 10 provided byside walls 46, 48 facilitate a snug fit for thescooter 100. Therefore, thescooter 100 is more securely held and less prone to shift or otherwise move around when being carried in thebackpack apparatus 1 by the user. - To unpack the
scooter 100 from thebackpack apparatus 1, the user unfastens the velcro of thereleasable strap 29 onshoulder strap 28 b and then unfastens themating portion 66 from themating piece 68 of theclosure device 60 to open the closure device. The user may then either unfasten thebuckles strap apparatus 42 a or just loosen one or bothstrap apparatus holder panel 13 and thebackpack body 10 to ease removal of thescooter 100 from thescooter storage compartment 50. Then thescooter 100 can be slid out of thescooter storage compartment 50 by grasping a front portion of thescooter 100 such as thefront wheel 130, thefront fork 128, thehead tube 120, or thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 and pulling the scooter deck assembly 110 in through the second side opening 54 of thescooter storage compartment 50 and then out thefirst side opening 52. - Turning to
FIGS. 10-11 , operation of the backpack apparatus to carry a partially disassembled scooter will be described. On the other side of theholder panel 13, the user fully zips thesecond zipper assembly 56 b so thesecond side edge 40 of theholder panel 13 is fastened to thesecond side portion 22 of thebackpack body 10. Thus, the user has created only oneside opening 52 for thescooter storage compartment 50 on the first side of theholder panel 13, thereby converting thescooter storage compartment 50 to the partially closed configuration. The user may unfastenbuckles strap apparatus holder panel 13 from thebackpack body 10. The user may also unfastenbuckle 39 offront securing strap 37 to prepare for inserting thescooter 100. - Either previously, or at this time, the user partially disassembles the
scooter 100. More particularly, the user separates thesteer tube 122 from the deck assembly 110 by removing thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 from thehead tube 120. Then the user inserts the deck assembly 110 of thescooter 100 into thescooter storage compartment 50 either through thetop space 33 between thetop edge 34 of theholder panel 13 andfront portion 18 of thebackpack body 10 or the through the first side opening 52 of theholder panel assembly 12. If loaded from the top, the user faces theneck 116 andhead tube 120 down so those components of the scooter rest at the bottom of thescooter storage compartment 50 and the back 135 of thescooter 100 and therear wheel 131 and brake 108 stick out of thetop space 33. If loaded through thefirst side opening 52, the user inserts therear wheel 131 in first and slides the back 135 of thescooter 100 into thescooter storage compartment 50 and upwards through thetop opening 33. When thescooter 100 is loaded, a rear portion of the deck assembly 110 may also stick out of thetop opening 33, and an inner tube portion of thescooter 100 may stick out of thefirst side opening 52. The user then fastensbuckle 44 b of thestrap apparatus 42 b to secure theholder panel 13 to thebackpack body 10 and maintain a tight, snug storage of the scooter deck assembly 110. In exemplary embodiments, the user extendsfront securing strap 37 around the back 135 of thescooter 100 and fastensbuckle 39 to further secure the back 135 of thescooter 100. - The user then stows the
steer tube 122 of thescooter 100 by placing thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 intoside pocket 70. In exemplary embodiments, the user slides thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 in between theelastic band 71 of themesh 73side pocket 70 and theside 22 of thebackpack body 10. Theelastic band 71 will hold thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 securely. If the backpack apparatus utilizes a solid flap side pocket 70A, as shown inFIG. 12 , the user may zip thezipper 72 of the side pocket 70A up to a point where thezipper 72 is adjacent thesteer tube 122 for a more snug fit in the side pocket 70A. To secure thesteer tube 122 of thescooter 100 to thebackpack apparatus 1, the user unfastens themating portion 66 from themating piece 68 of theclosure device 60 and holds theband 62 open. - As best seen in
FIG. 11 , one of thestrap apparatus 42 a can be used to further secure thesteer tube 122 of thescooter 100 by extending the strap apparatus 42 around atop portion 124 of thesteer tube 122 andfastening buckle 44 a. Advantageously, the additional connection between theholder panel 13 and thebackpack body 10 provided byside wall 46 facilitates a snug fit for the scooter deck assembly 110. Therefore, the deck assembly 110 is more securely held and less prone to shift or otherwise move around when being carried in thebackpack apparatus 1 by the user. As to thesteer tube 122, it is simultaneously held by thestrap apparatus 42 a at or near atop portion 124 of the steer tube, by theclosure device 60 at an intermediate point of thesteer tube 122, and the bottom of thesteer tube 122 is disposed within and supported by theside pocket 70. - To unpack the partially disassembled
scooter 100 from thebackpack apparatus 1 in which thescooter storage compartment 50 is in the partially closed configuration, the user may first unfastenbuckle 44 a to detachstrap apparatus 42 a from thebackpack body 10 or simply loosenstrap apparatus 42 a. Next, the user unfastens themating portion 66 from themating piece 68 of theclosure device 60 to open the closure device. Thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 may be lifted out ofpocket 70. If using solid flap side pocket 70A, thezipper 72 of side pocket 70A may be unzipped and thesteer tube 122 removed. Alternatively, theclosure device 60 may be loosened and thesteer tube 122 slid upwards and removed. - To unpack the scooter deck assembly 110 from the
scooter storage compartment 50, the user first unfastensbuckle 39 to openfront securing strap 37 to release the back 135 of thescooter 100. Next, the user may either unfasten thebuckle 44 b of thestrap apparatus 42 b or loosenstrap apparatus 42 b. This creates some space between theholder panel 13 and thebackpack body 10 to ease removal of the deck assembly 110 from thescooter storage compartment 50. Then the deck assembly 110 can be slid out of thescooter storage compartment 50 by grasping therear wheel 131 or the back end 35 of the deck assembly 110 and pulling the deck assembly upwards and out through thetop opening 33 of theholder panel assembly 12. Alternatively, the user could grasp thehead tube 120 and pull the scooter deck assembly 110 out through the first side opening 52 of thescooter storage compartment 50. - Once the
scooter 100 is removed from the backpack apparatus, bothzipper assemblies side openings holder panel assembly 12 to thebackpack body 10. This streamlines thebackpack apparatus 1 and lends it a more attractive appearance than if theholder panel 13 were left hanging loose. As seen inFIG. 12 , the user can securely hang thebackpack apparatus 1 on thescooter 100 so the user does not need to carry thebackpack apparatus 1 while riding. More particularly, shoulder straps Webbing strap 20 may be tightened and buckle 32 fastened to shorten the length of thestrap 20 and create a more secure connection. - It should be noted that a variety of storage options are available for stowing a
scooter 100 or components thereof inbackpack apparatus 1. By way of example, another approach is to carry thesteer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134 in thescooter storage compartment 50, as shown inFIG. 13 . An embodiment of abackpack apparatus 1 for this storage option would have afirst zipper assembly 56 a and asecond zipper assembly 56 b on opposite sides of theholder panel 13 such that thezipper assemblies holder panel 13 to the bottom. - To stow the
scooter steer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134, the user first separates thesteer tube 122 from the deck assembly 110 by removing thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 from thehead tube 120. The user then fully unzipszipper assemblies holder panel 13. Then the user inserts thesteer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134 of thescooter 100 into thescooter storage compartment 50 either through thetop space 33 between thetop edge 34 of theholder panel 13 andfront portion 18 of thebackpack body 10 or through the first or second side opening 52, 54 of theholder panel assembly 12. If loaded from the top, the user faces thehandlebar assembly 134 down and may insert at an angle with one ofhandlebars handlebar assembly 134 in thescooter storage compartment 50. Thehandlebar assembly 134 and steertube 122 is then lowered down so thehandlebar assembly 134 rests at the bottom of thescooter storage compartment 50, thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 sticks out of thetop space 33, and one ofhandlebars holder panel assembly 12 and the other ofhandlebars holder panel assembly 12. - If loaded through the
first side opening 52, the user inserts thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 in first, turns it upward and then slides one ofhandlebars scooter storage compartment 50 so thebottom portion 126 of thesteer tube 122 extends upward through thetop opening 33, one ofhandlebars side opening 52 of theholder panel assembly 12 and the other ofhandlebars holder panel assembly 12. The user then zipszipper assemblies holder panel 13 adjacent to and securing thehandlebars buckle 44 b of thestrap apparatus 42 b to secure theholder panel 13 to thebackpack body 10 and maintain a tight, snug storage of thescooter steer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134. To unload thescooter steer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134, the user unzipszipper assemblies steer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134 by grasping either thesteer tube 122 or one of thehandlebars 136 a, 136 and pulling thesteer tube 122 andhandlebar assembly 134 out through thetop opening 33 of theholder panel assembly 12 or through one of theside openings holder panel assembly 12. - As shown in
FIG. 2 , a second closure device 60A may be provided on theback portion 20 of thebackpack body 10. Thus, thebackpack apparatus 1 can be secured to thescooter 100 by using closure device 60A to wrap around thescooter steer tube 122, as shown inFIG. 14 . To do this, the user unfastens themating portion 66 from themating piece 68 of the closure device 60A and holds theband 62 open. The user then stretches theband 62 around thescooter steer tube 122 and fastens themating portion 66 to themating piece 68 to create a tight connection so the closure device 60A snugly holds thesteer tube 122. Advantageously, this additional connection between the closure device 60A and thescooter steer tube 122 provides a more secure attachment of thebackpack apparatus 1 to thescooter 100. Therefore, thebackpack apparatus 1 is more securely held and less prone to shift or otherwise move around while the user is riding thescooter 100. To detach thebackpack apparatus 1 from thescooter 100, the user unfastens themating portion 66 from themating piece 68 of the closure device 60A, holds theband 62 open, and grasps thebackpack apparatus 1.Webbing strap 20 is loosened and/orbuckle 32 is unfastened. The user then takes the shoulder straps 28 a, 28 b off of the handle bars 36 a, 36 b and removes thebackpack apparatus 1 from thescooter 100. - Thus, it is seen that scooter cases and backpack apparatus are provided. It should be understood that any of the foregoing configurations and specialized components or may be interchangeably used with any of the apparatus or systems of the preceding embodiments. Although illustrative embodiments are described hereinabove, it will be evident to one skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the disclosure. It is intended in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications that fall within the true spirit and scope of the disclosure.
