The sofa bed includes two sections of the back rest that may be in one of three positions, such as being in the upright, partially laid down or laid down position. Further, the sofa bed includes arm rests that may be positioned in one of three positions, such as being in the resting position, about 20 degrees or about 45 degrees above the level of the seat deck. In this manner, the sofa bed has the functionality of having different positions used for various activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, to add to the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed.
Description
- The present invention relates to sofa beds, and more particularly to a sofa bed with the functionality of having its arm rests and back rest being placed in various positions.
- A sofa is an upholstered item of furniture for the comfortable seating of more than one person and typically has an armrest on both sides of the sofa along with a back rest. Sofas are usually to be found in the family room, living room, den or the lounge. They are covered in a variety of textiles or in leather.
- Sofas may be convertible into a bed. This type of furniture is often referred to as a “sofa bed.” Typically, sofa beds are designed with a back rest and a seat deck. The back rest is used primarily for resting the back of the user of the sofa. The seat deck is used primarily for sitting by the user of the sofa. In a sofa bed, the back rest may be configured to be pushed back thereby forming a bed. However, sofa beds are currently limited in the number of positions available for sitting, sleeping or resting.
- If, however, a sofa bed had the functionality of having different positions that may be used for various activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, then the user would have a greater selection of settings to add to the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed.
- Hence, there is a need in the art for a sofa bed with the functionality of having different positions used for various activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, to add to the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed.
- In one embodiment of the present invention, a sofa bed comprises a seat deck having two sides, where each side comprises an arm rest. The arm rest for each side of the seat deck is configured to be placed in a first, in a second and in a third position. Furthermore, the sofa bed comprises a back rest comprising a first and a second section, where the first and the second sections of the back rest are configured to be placed in a first, in a second and in a third position. The first position of the first and second sections of the back rest is an upright position. The second position of the first and second sections of the back rest is a lounge position. The third position of the first and second sections of the back rest is a bed position.
- In another embodiment of the present invention, a sofa bed comprises a seat deck having two sides, where each side comprises an arm rest. The arm rest for each side of the seat deck is configured to be placed in a first, in a second and in a third position. The first position of the arm rest for each side of the seat deck is a resting position. The second position and the third position of the arm rest for each side of the seat deck is about 20 degrees and about 45 degrees, respectively, above a horizontal level of the seat deck.
- The foregoing has outlined rather generally the features and technical advantages of one or more embodiments of the present invention in order that the detailed description of the present invention that follows may be better understood. Additional features and advantages of the present invention will be described hereinafter which may form the subject of the claims of the present invention.
- A better understanding of the present invention can be obtained when the following detailed description is considered in conjunction with the following drawings, in which:
-

In one embodiment of the present invention, the sofa bed includes two sections of the back rest that may be in one of three positions, such as being in the upright, partially laid down or laid down position. For instance, an arm rest may have the functionality to be in a position to act as a pillow replacer for sleeping. Further, the different positions of such a sofa bed may be used by multiple people.
- In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention may be practiced without such specific details.
- As discussed in the Background section, sofa beds are typically designed with a back rest and a seat deck. If, however, a sofa bed had the functionality of having different positions that may be used for various activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, then the user would have a greater selection of settings to add to the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed. Hence, there is a need in the art for a sofa bed with the functionality of having different positions used for various activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, to add to the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed.
- The sofa bed of the present invention is configured with the functionality of having different positions used for various activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, to add to the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed as discussed below in connection with

FIG. 4 ,FIG. 4 illustrates a view ofsofa bed 100 withsections 104A-B ofback rest 102 being completely laid down (referred to herein as the “bed position”) in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.Sections 104A-B are both placed in the third or laid down position thereby havingsofa 100 form a bed.Sections 104A-B though may not necessarily be in the same position. An example of such an embodiment is discussed below in connection withFIG. 5 . - Referring to
FIG. 5 ,FIG. 5 illustrates a view ofsofa bed 100 with one of the twosections 104A-B ofback rest 102 being laid down (referred to herein as the “split back rest position”). WhileFIG. 5 illustratessection 104B ofback rest 102 being in the upright position andsection 104A ofback rest 102 being in the laid down position, bothsections 104A-B have the capability of being in a different position than the other section. - In addition to
sections 104A-B ofback rest 102 having the capability of being in one of three positions, arm rests 103A-B (FIGS. 1 and 2-5) have the capability of being in one of three positions. As discussed above, arm rests 103 were in the laid down position as illustrated inFIG. 1 .FIG. 6 illustrates a view ofsofa bed 100 with armrests 103 being at 20 degrees above the horizontal level ofseat deck 101 in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
