Abstract

A golf swing training club that strengthens and stretches the muscles used in golf, improves visual concentration, and increases hand-eye coordination. The golf swing training club accomplishes these objectives by use of a weighted, conical, golf ball sized club head that when used during a swing, causes a golfer to visually focus primarily on the ball and club head. The shape of the head resembles a miniature golf wood, having a flattened face and a curved back. This flattened face allows the golfer, when swinging, to make solid contact with the ball. The weight of the club head, when used repeatedly, stretches and strengthens the muscles used for golf.

  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • 1. Field of the Invention
  • This invention relates generally to golf swing training clubs. More particularly, this device relates to golf swing training clubs incorporating various features designed to help golfers improve their visual concentration and increase hand-eye coordination that will help drive the ball to the desired line of flight.
  • 2. Description of Related Art
  • Golf is one of the world's most popular sports. It can be frustrating for most people who are lacking the necessary skills to make it more enjoyable. There are many videos, books, and training apparatuses on the market that seem to focus too much on the mechanics of making “the perfect swing”. Everybody swings a golf club differently, even professionals. Most people are too concerned with swing mechanics that they forget about the most important aspect of golf, making solid contact with the golf ball.
  • To my knowledge, the only golf swing training club that relates to this invention is the Powerstik (Provisional Patent Application No. 60/300,785). The Powerstik lacks a flat club head face and thus cannot be used to sufficiently hit golf balls. The inventor, George W. Rodgers, has even stated that it is not to be used to hit actual golf balls, it is for swinging practice only.
  • BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • In the present invention, the golf swing training club enables a golfer to drastically increase their hand-eye coordination, visual concentration, strength and flexibility without having to worry about making “the perfect swing”. The golf club is comprised of a standard rubber golf grip, a cylindrical steel shaft extending to an end point hosel, and a club head extending radially outward.
  • The club head for this invention is the same diameter as the minimum required size of a golf ball as enforced by the United States Golf Association. The club head is comprised of a weighted, conical golf club head with a flat face that when used during a swing, causes the golfer to visually focus only on the impact zone of the golf ball which increases hand-eye coordination and visual concentration. The weight of the club head, which is 16 ounces, when used repeatedly, stretches and strengthens the muscles used for golf. The club is designed to assist any golfer to learn the correct fluid motion of a powerful, well-executed full swing, and also works to correct common swinging flaws. It gives a beginning golfer an easy way to learn the true feeling and correct motion of a good golf swing, and also strengthens the muscles used for golf. Finally, it is ideal to use during warm-up, since it tones and stretches the golfing muscles as it helps the golfer regain the feel of a proper swing, which is necessary for good golf play. To my knowledge, the said invention is the only golf swing training club that has a miniature club head that is the same diameter of a required USGA golf ball. As stated above, the size of the club head leads to the increase in hand-eye coordination and visual concentration while practicing hitting golf balls.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • In the accompanying drawings,
  • FIGS. 1 and 2 are side views of the club head, shaft and ferrule;
  • FIG. 3 is a section view of the grip end of the club and of the steel shaft;
  • FIG. 4 is an assembled full view of the entire golf swing training club;
  • FIG. 5 is a cross section view of the front and back of the club head;
  • FIG. 6 is a view of the top of the club head;
  • FIG. 7 is a cross section view of the side of the club head.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • Referring to FIGS. 1,3, and 4, the invention is comprised of a standard steel golf iron shaft 1. A suitable shaft can be found at many golf repair stores. The steel shaft has an outer wall diameter at the tip of 0.370 inches and a butt diameter of 0.60 inches. It has a weight of 125 grams and is 40 inches in length. The golf shaft is secured in the club head by a two part, 3300 pound shear strength golf shaft epoxy.
  • The ferrule 2 is comprised of hard plastic and has an inside diameter of 0.370 inches and an outside diameter of 13.4 millimeters and a length of ½ inches. It is secured to the shaft by a two part, 3300 pound shear strength golf shaft epoxy. The bottom of the ferrule is about 1¼ inches from the tip of the shaft, and rests on top of the club head.
  • A standard rubber grip 3 is adhered to the butt end of the steel shaft with two inch double-sided grip tape found at many golf repair stores. The grip of the golf club is manufactured by Karma and has a 0.60 inch core size and a weight of 48 grams.
  • The golf swing training club head 4/4 a/4 b is comprised of solid carbon steel, having a weight of 16 ounces. The shape of the club head is conical. The club head is 2 inches in length and the face is 1.625 inches in diameter. The face of the club head is the same diameter as the minimum required size of a golf ball as specified by the United States Golf Association. The golf club head is made in a CNC machine lathe which many machine shops have.
  • The golf swing training club head has a 14 millimeter diameter by 0.062 inch deep hole 5/5 a/5 b engraved into the top to firmly seat the ferrule. The club head has a 0.375 inch diameter by 1.25 inch deep hole 6/6 a/6 b drilled into the top of the solid carbon steel head to house the steel shaft.
  • This golf swing training club is to be used either daily for ten to fifteen minutes or on the golf course in between every shot. The small head size causes one to focus only on the club head and the golf ball when at address, thus improving hand-eye coordination and visual concentration. The club head itself is over seventy percent of the club's weight, which guides one's arms along the desired swing plane and causes one to execute a desirable golf swing without consciously thinking about it. The club's weight also, after repetitive swinging, increases ones strength and flexibility in the muscles used for golf.
