Abstract

The present invention is direct toward a yelp saver constructed from spring wire and having two distinct sections or portions. The two portions have rounded sections that allow the user to place the yelp saver into the game call without damaging the reeds or poking holes in the reeds and the two sections are separated by a spring action in the yelp saver that allows the reeds to be separated for drying.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention
This invention relates generally to wild game calls, and more particularly to turkey or yelp call having two or more reeds. Specifically, this invention relates to a device to separate the reeds of a wild game call to allow the reeds to dry and thereby prevent damage to the reeds.
2. Related Art
In the pursuit of wild game, such as elk, turkey, or coyote, for example, it is highly advantageous to use a call to simulate the various sounds emitted by the animal. This way, the animal may be enticed to come to the hunter. This is particularly so when hunting with a bow, or a shotgun or camera and stalking game for short range contact. Many of the wild game calls use membrane-reed type calls made out of thin latex. Generally these membrane-reed calls are easy to use and have double, triple or even quadruple reeds.
Turkey calls or yelps (yelp is the sound that a turkey makes) are designed to be placed in the user's mouth and during their use the reeds become moist from the user's saliva. The reeds are held in place by a mouthpiece that is usually a semicircular frame that enclose the reeds in such a manner that there is an open end and the reeds can vibrate when the user blows on them thereby creating the yelp. Often the user fails to separate the reeds which, after drying, adhere to one another thereby making it difficult to separate the reeds without damaging them. It goes without saying that damaged reeds do not make adequate game sounds and often the user is deep in the woods, far from a replacement supply. Sometimes the user will use a toothpick or some other small piece of wood but these improvised devices may also damage the reeds by poking holes in the reeds or even tearing the reeds. Thus there exists a need for a wild game call or yelp saver that separates the reeds without damaging the reeds in the process.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Accordingly, the present invention is directed to a device that separates the wild game call reeds thereby allowing the reeds to dry while at the same time preventing damage to the reeds when in use.
Additional features and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the description which follows, and in part will be apparent from the description, or may be learned by practice of the invention. The objects and other advantages of the invention will be realized and attained by the apparatus particularly pointed out in the written description and claims hereof as well as the appended drawing. It is to be understood that terms “turkey caller”, “yelp” and “wild game callers” describe latex reed devices and the use of any term is not intended to be limiting to any particular device.
To achieve these and other advantages and in accordance with the purpose of the invention as embodied and broadly described, the present invention is directed to a yelp saver consisting of a bent spring wire for insertion between the reeds of a turkey call or yelp or other wild game callers.
In another aspect of the invention, the invention is directed to a bent spring wire that is approximately one and a quarter (1.25) inches long and a half an inch wide. The bent spring wire in this aspect of the invention comprises a single wire that is bent at four different locations along its length as well as having a slight angle placed on one of the bends to create a spring or separation along its length.
In yet another aspect of the invention, yelp saver is constructed out of spring wire, plastic coated spring wire, or molded plastic.
In still another aspect of the invention, the yelp saver comprises a single wire with a first portion and a second portion. The first portion further comprising a straight first section that gives way to a second section bent to form a semi-circle leading into a third section that is parallel to the first straight section. The third section ends in a 90 degree bend that marks the beginning of the second portion. The second portion further comprises a straight section perpendicular to the third section of the first portion and parallel to the semi-circle second section of the first portion. The first section of the second portion nears but does not touch or cross over the first section of the first portion. The first section of the second portion ends in about a 105 degree bend. This bend also includes a slight twist vertically away from the plane of the first portion separating the two portions slightly. The second section of second portion is a straight section but this second section runs tangent from the starting point of the first section of the first portion towards the semi-circle second section of the first portion. The second section of the second portion ends in a bend of approximately about 135 degrees thereby forming a “vee.” The third section of the second portion is a straight section that extends to the 90 degree bend of the third section of the first portion. The two second sections are separated vertically by about 0.040 inches.
In another aspect of the invention the yelp saver is inserted into a turkey call or turkey yelp by placing the second sections of the two portions towards the base of the reed holders and between the reeds of the call or yelp.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Reference will now be made in detail to the present preferred embodiment of the invention an example f which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Referring to FIG. 1( a) where a top view of the yelp saver (100) is shown. The yelp saver (100) comprises a single wire with a first portion and a second portion. The first portion further comprising a straight first section (101) that gives way to a second section (102) bent to form a semi-circle leading into a third section (103) that is parallel to the first straight section. The third section ends in an about 90 degree bend (104) that marks the beginning of the second portion. The second portion further comprises a straight section (105) perpendicular to the third section (103) of the first portion and parallel to the semi-circle second section (102) of the first portion. The first section (105) of the second portion nears but does not touch or cross over the first section (101) of the first portion. The first section of the second portion ends in an about 105 degree bend (106) which also includes a slight twist vertically away from the plane of the first portion separating the two portions slightly. The second section (107) of second portion is a straight section but this second section runs tangent from the starting point of the first section (101) of the first portion towards the semi-circle second section (102) of the first portion. The second section (107) of the second portion ends in a bend of approximately about 135 degrees thereby forming a “vee” (108). The third section (109) of the second portion is a straight section that extends to the 90 degree bend (104) of the third section (103) of the first portion. The two second sections are separated vertically by about 0.040 inches.
Referring to FIG. 1( b) the yelp saver is shown in side view from the right side. The gap between the second section (102) of the first portion and the second section (108) of the second portion is illustrated. This gap may range from about 0.030 inches to 0.05 inches. It is the gap between the two second sections that provides the needed separation to keep the reeds apart.
In one embodiment, the yelp saver is constructed from 20 gauge ss spring temper wire. In another embodiment, the yelp saver is constructed from 20 gauge ss spring temper wire with a coating consisting of plastic, hard rubber, enamel or paint which will prevent the metal from rusting over time. Such coatings are well known in the art. Similarly, the yelp saver may be constructed from a plastic wire or even molded from plastic or hard rubber.
The yelp saver used by inserting the yelp saver between the reeds of a wild game call. The user squeezes the yelp saver between his or her thumb and fingers to compress the yelper saver and gently inserts the rounded sections between the reeds of the call until the rounded sections meet the reed holder.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications and variations can be made it the yelp saver of the present invention with out departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Thus, it is intended that the present invention cover modifications and variations of this invention provided they come within the scope of the appended claims and their equivalents.

Claims

1. A yelp saver consisting of a bent spring wire for insertion between the reeds of a turkey call.

2. The yelp saver according to claim 1, wherein the bent spring wire is approximately 1.25 inches long and a half an inch wide.

3. The yelp saver according to claim 1, wherein the bent spring wire comprises a single wire that is bent at four different locations along its length as well as having a slight twist placed on one of the bends to create a spring or separation along its length.

4. The yelp saver according to claim 1, wherein the yelp saver is constructed from spring wire, coated spring wire, plastic or molded plastic.

5. The yelp saver according to claim 4, wherein the spring wire is 20 gauge spring wire.

6. The yelp saver according to claim 4, wherein the yelp saver is constructed from coated spring wire.

7. The yelp saver according to claim 6, wherein the coated spring wire is coated with plastic, rubber, enamel or paint.

8. A yelp saver comprising a single wire with a first portion and a second portion.

9. The yelp saver according to claim 8, wherein the first portion further comprises a straight first section that gives way to a second section bent to form a semi-circle leading into a third section that is parallel to the first straight section and said third section ends in a 90 degree bend that marks the beginning of the second portion.

10. The yelp saver according to claim 8,wherein the second portion further comprises a straight section perpendicular to the third section of the first portion and parallel to the semi-circle second section of the first portion, said first section of the second portion nears but does not touch or cross over the first section of the first portion, said first section of the second portion ends in about a 105 degree bend which also includes a slight twist vertically away from the plane of the first portion separating the two portions slightly, said second section of second portion is a straight section running tangent from the starting point of the first section of the first portion towards the semi-circle second section of the first portion, said second section of the second portion ends in a bend of approximately about 135 degrees thereby forming a vee shaped bend, the leads to a third section of the second portion, said third section of the second portion is a straight section that extends to the 90 degree bend of the third section of the first portion.

11. The yelp saver according to claim 8, wherein the two second sections are separated vertically by about 0.040 inches.

12. A method of using a yelp saver wherein a yelp saver is inserted into a turkey call or turkey yelp by placing the second sections of the two portions towards the base of the reed holders and between the reeds of the caller, thereby allowing the spring of the yelp saver to separate the reeds of the yelp saver.
