4 Claims.
' This invention relates to ,a certain new and useful improvement in burial garments.
, My inventionhas for itsprime object the provision of aquasi-apparel garment for attiring a 5 malecorpse when in itsiburial casket, the so attired'body, when exposed to view through a transparent panel of the casket or throughvthe usualdoor-opening of the casket, then presentjing the appearance of a neatly and fully dressed person.
'lMy invention has .for a further object the pro- ,vision or. such .a quasi-apparel garment which aembodies, as substantially a unitary structure, the ,frontal portions of the customary outer attire of themaleperson, the garment being economically constructed and manufiactured and ,built up for dressing on a corpse with convenience,
facility, and minimum effort.
;-And with the above and ,other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.
, ,Inlthe accompanying .drawing, V
Figure 1 is a plan view of a burial garment of my invention as dressed on .a corpse and the corpse disposed ina cofiin;
Figured is a partly opened-out View of the garment as disposed on a body; and
Figure 3 is-an opened-out plan view of the garment.
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, the
" the waist line downwardly, as at 2, in simulation of the usual front and crotch opening Off the male trousers;
Stitched or otherwise attached to, and extending upwardly from, the upper-central margin oh? the skirt portion A, is .a false shirt-front B of suitable shirt-material and dimensioned for draping over the upperportion of the torso of the corpse. The shirt-front B is folded and stitched upon itself to include a pair of suitably spaced longitudinal tucks 3, 3, for simulating the usual'buttdnhole band of a mans shirt, and un- Tderlying, andstitched to the side and upper margin-sot, theshirt iront B, isa piece of reinforcingbmaterialflgwhile at its upper re-inforced 'margin, thefshirt-iront B is stifiened with a split neck-band 5 provided with'a suitable centrally located apertureiori'receivinga collar button 6. 1 1, designatejcomplementary collar-sections resultingfrom' splitting or severing, as at 8, .the usual or custprnary mans turned-down collar, suchsectionsfbeing suitably mounted upon, and, as at 9, stapledor otherwise permanently attached to, the corresponding sections of the shirt-band 5 their ,f iont tabsbeing also attached upon the collar-button '6', as shown,
' thereof foroverlying the shirt-front B, and overlying the shirt front Bfand tiei l, is a vest-front C comprising h'alfsectionsfl, i2, insimulationof the seotionsoi aflmans vest, the sections l2, l2
being constructed of suiting material preferably matching j the goods of'the skirt-portion A and provided with the customary buttons l 3, where the vest-sectionsjili, Ql Zpmeet at the center of the earment, the stitchingof thebuttons, it also serving, it maybe said, for, securing the vest-sections l2, 12' together. f
At its side margins th e vest-front C is stitched or secured, as at M, to the corresponding side margins or the shirt-front B,. and, in the customlary manner extends belowthe waist-line of the garmentforoverlapping the upper marginal portionof the trouser-forming skirt-portion A; Attached to and extending laterally from the respective side margins of the: vest-front C, is a ,pairoiltabs 15, each provided with a tape or tiestri1 1'g l6 adapted to be passed around the body and tied together for dressing the garment neatly on the corpse' In turn, overlying the vest-front C, is a pair of right and left-hand cape-like members or coatsections D, D, respectively, each, in the present instance, including a sleeve H, in which, at its outer end, is secured a cuff it of linen or other suitable material. The coat-sections D, D are constructed of appropriate suiting material and each comprises substantially a half-portion of a mans coat, the coat-sections D, D, being equipped with buttons and button-holes 2 l, respectively.
l l l .15 ,Each cpllar-section "1 is also provided with a At its upper rear portion, each coat-section D, D, is sewed or stapled, as at 22, to the corresponding portion of the shirt-section B, the entire assembly of skirt A, shirt B, vest C, and coatsections D, D, thus forming a unitary garmentstructure.
As will thus be readily understood, the garment comprises a body-covering portion ABC, having similitude to a pants-shirt-vest ensemble, and a. pair of right and left coat-sections D, D attached in cape-like manner, that is to say, approximately at the shoulders or to the collar of the body-portion ABC, the whole being a uni tary garment with the coat-sections D, D, swingable widely from the body-portion ABC for facilitating the dressing of the garment on the corpse, as will shortly appear.
In use, the garment is stretched out, as shown in Figure 2, and dressed, from the front only, upon the corpse. The coat-sections D, D, being attached merely to and at the respective collarsections 1, 1, of the garment, may be readily manipulated for inserting the arms of the corpse into the sleeves IT. The garment is then shifted upwardly on the corpse, and the collar-sections I placed around the neck thereof, the collar-tapes l0 being employed for securing the collar-sections 1 in the neck-embracing position and the tapes I6 being likewise passed under the body and tied for securing the garment at the waist.
The skirt-portion A is then tucked around the limbs and the side margins of the coat-sections D, D, tucked under the torso, the corpse, when in the casket, then having the appearance of a fully dressed person, as shown in Figure 1.
The garment may be readily and inexpensively constructed, efiects a large economy to a family in a distressing situation, and serves most emciently in fittingly presenting a body to the last remembering view of family and friends. 7
It will be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the garment may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;-
