(01. 229-52) The invention relates to adhesive closing means for the paper wrappers of shop purchase or other hand packages of the character combined with a handle for facilitating the carrying of the package. The previously known adhesive closures of this character consist of a piece of paper coated with dried adhesive to which the handle consisting of a piece of wire or string is attached by gumming on or by means of eyelets. Such closure means for keeping in stock separately are very inconvenient in use as theyare stored without order in storage cases necessary for the purpose and must be withdrawn separately.

Hie loose pieces of adhesive paper of these closure means unavoidably roll up more or less tightly under the co-operation of the hygroscopic properties of the adhesive so that, before moistening the adhesive surfaces, they must be smoothed out fiat which requires more or less time and trouble. Also for similar reasons, the fingers of the packer, during handling, easily come into contact with the moistened adhesive surfaces so that as the hands become sticky the rapid process of the packing operation is rendered difiicult.

The present invention relates to a closure means adapted for such purposes wherein the disadvantages referred to, are eliminated in that they are not prepared as separate units but collectively in the manner of the usual assembled 3 adhesive strips for closing paper packages, so that in a similar manner to the latter they can be kept in stock in the form of rolls. The auxiliary means of the adhesive strips serving to form the carrying handles in this case consists of a strong carrying band which passes longitudinally along the adhesive paper strip serving as the closing and securing means and is connected thereto at certain intervals by adhesive in such a manner that the sections of the carrying band between these gummed points form loose loops which,

after connecting the closing device to the package may serve as carrying handles. The endless band shape form of such stock units thus enables the closing means to be prepared for use in quite a similar manner and with substantially corresponding auxiliary means as an ordinary adhesive paper strip viz: when withdrawing a suitable section of the adhesive band from the stock roll automatically moistening its adhesive surfaces and after detaching the workpiece by means of a suitable cutting device applying it to the point to be closed and securing it, whilst contact of the fingers with the wet adhesive surfaces can be practically completely obviated.

The paper band i serving asclosing means for the paper wrapper is provided on one of its two surfaces. with a coating 2 of adhesive. The carrying band 3, consisting for example of a narrow woven band strip of cotton or silk, is 25 secured along the middle of the paper band I, on its adhesive surface at 4 at certain intervals preferably in such a manner that the sections of the ca ying band which remain free between the gummed points are larger than the sections of 2 the paper band i located between them. The loose intermediate sections of the carrying band are passed to the side of the paper band free' from adhesive through transverse holest, at the ends thereof in the paper band, which are prefer- 3e ably connected by a longitudinal cut 6, so that they form loose loops 1 thereon.

For the production of the adhesive band both paper strips and carrying bands are withdrawn from stock rolls on which they are wound insuit- 35 able lengths and the carrying band after previous or subsequent application of adhesive is placed on one side of the paper band at certain intervals against the adhesive surfaces thereof. The loop sections 7 are during this operation forced to through the openings formed by the transverse holes 5 and the longitudinal cuts 6 by means of a suitable tool to such an extent as corresponds with the desired width of loop. If necessary, the outer surfaces of the carrying band sec- 45 tions adhering to the adhesive surface may be again coated with adhesive.

After drying the adhesive, the completed adhesive band is preferably wound like an ordinary paper adhesive band in the form of rolls. From these stockrolls, there are cut by means of a. suitable cutting device, for the purpose of using the adhesive band, sections of such length that they preferably contain a loop 1 at the middle over which there extends at both ends for a cer- 56 tain distance the wider paper band I strengthened. by the narrower carrying band 3 gummed thereto. The device serving to store the supplyroll is preferably so constructed, as when using the usual adhesive bands, that when withdrawing the band from the roll the adhesive band is passed over a moistening device which moistens the adhesive surface with water.

The adhesive band section thus prepared is so gummed to the paper wrapper of the package 8 to be closed'that the two end portions of the section preferably extend over two parallel oppositely disposed surfaces of the package over the closing fold 9 of this wrapper and thus nondetachably bridge this,--whilst the section of the paper band under the band loop 1 between the transverse holes 5 passes over the surface connecting together the oppositely disposed package surfaces and is secured to this by means of its adhesive layer by the application of pressure.

The loop I then forms over the last-mentioned securing point a handle which can be used for carrying the package.

In order to prevent the paper band i, under the action of the pulling force on the carrying band 1, from being torn in an irregular manner, the paper band I, adjacent the passage holes 5, is preferably perforated for a certain distance "at opposite sides of the strip 3 as shown at l0 so that the unavoidable tears i I caused when grasping the handle and drawing it upwardly to lift a package will follow the lines of perforations and not damage the gummed strip.

In Figures 5 and 6 there has been shown a modified embodiment of the invention wherein the construction is the same as that shown in Figures 1 and 2, except that the lines of perforations ID are omitted and intermediate the length of the slit 6 the paper strip is scored transversely by a line of perforations l2, along which the strip can be easily torn. By this arrangement the strip can be applied to a package shown in Figure 6 which is of less thickness than the length of the slit 6 and still have the openings 5 disposed at the upper ends of side faces of the package. The strip will be torn along the line of scoring I! either before or after securing end portions of the strip to sides of the package and the severed intermediate portions will, one be secured against the upper face of the package and the other secured in overlying relation to the first. Therefore, the handle I will still project upwardly from the package a suiilcient distance to permit it to be readily grasped and the package easily carried.

In Figure 7 the intermediate portion of the paper strip between the attached end portions of the carrying band has been entirely eliminated and the handleeforming portion 1 constitutes the a sole connection between the spaced portions of gummed strip. This embodiment is particularly adapted for use in securing a wrapper about a phonograph record or other thin object as the sections of gummed paper can be easily secured in their proper positions against opposite sides of the parcel with the handle 1 extending upwardly therefrom.

I claim:

1. A package sealing and carrying device comprising a sealing strip having an adhesive coating upon its inner face and having its intermediate portion formed with a longitudinally extending slit, and a carrying strip of lesswidth than the sealing strip extending longitudinally of the sealing strip and having portions secured against the inner face of the sealing strip longitudinally beyond ends of the form a handle, the sealing strip being formed with weakened portions extending longitudinally thereof from ends of the slit along opposite sides of the carrying strip to guide tearing of the sealing strip when the handle is graspedand drawn upwardly to lift a package. I

A package sealing and carrying device comprising a sealing strip of tearable material of sufficient length to extend across the top and downwardly along side portions of a package, said strip being formed in its intermediate portion with a longitudinally extending slit and openings at ends of the slit, and a carrying strip of tough material of less width than the sealing strip having portions secured against the inner face of the sealing strip and extending longitudinally thereof from the openings, the intermediate portion of the carrying strip being loose and passed outwardly through the slit to form a handle having its ends extending through the openings, the sealing strip being provided with lines of perforations extending longitudinally thereof from the openings at opposite sides of the attached portions of the carry g strip to guide tearing of the sealing strip longitudinally thereof away from the openings towards sides of a package when the handle is grasped and drawn upwardly to lift a package.

3. A package sealing and carrying device comprising a sealing strip of suflicient length to extend across the top and downwardly along side portions of a package, the inner face of the strip having an adhesive coating and an intermediate portion of the strip being formed with a longitudinally extending slit, and a carrying strip of tough material extending longitudinally of said sealing strip with portions extending along the inner face of the sealing strip and secured thereto between ends of the slit and ends of the sealing strip and having a loose intermediate portion projecting outwardly through the slit to form a handle adapted to be grasped and drawn upwardly above the top of a package.

4. A package sealing and carrying device comprising an elongated sealing strip of tearable material having its inner face provided with a coating of adhesive material, the said strip being formed with a longitudinally extending slit intermediate its length, and a carrying strip of tough material of less width than the sealing strip, said carrying strip extending the full length of the sealing strip and having/a portion projecting outwardly through the slit to form a handle and other portions extending longitudinally of the sealing strip and secured against the inner face thereof from ends of the slit.

5. A package sealing and carrying device comprising an elongated sealing strip having its inner face provided with a coating of adhesive material, the strip being formed with longitudinally extending slits spaced from each other longitudinally of the strip whereby the strip may be severed between the slits and form sections each of sufficient length to extend across the top of a package and downwardly along sides thereof, and a carrying strip extending the full length of the sealing strip and havingattaching portions extending longitudinally of the sealing strip between the slits and secured against the inner face thereof and loose portions projecting, outwardly through the slits to form handles adapted to be folded fiat against the outer face of the sealing slit and a loose intermediate portion projected outwardly through the slit to strip before use and be drawn upwardly above the slits when in use.

6. A package sealing and carrying device comprising an elongated sealing strip having its inner face provided with a coating of adhesive material, the said strip being formed with a longitudinally extending slit intermediate its length and intermediate the length of the slit being provided with a transversely extending line of 10 scoring whereby the sealing strip may be tom along the line of scoring to form separate sections, and.a carrying strip of tough material of less width than the sealing strip extending 1ongitudinally of the sealing strip and having its end portions secured against the inner face of the sealing strip between ends oi. the slit and ends of the sealing strip, the intermediate portion of the carrying strip being loose and projecting outwardly from the slit to form a handle.
