Abstract

A backpack with an outer layer made of a liquid-impervious material that when unfastened and unfolded becomes a diaper changing pad having a plurality of padded sections interconnected by fold lines so that the pad in the planar conditions serves as an infant changing pad. When folded, the outer layer changing pad with the inner handbag assumes the shape and characteristics of a traditional backpack having two shoulder straps and a fastening device which secures the inner handbag. The handbag is comprised of a liquid-impervious material which has multiple side pockets and a pair of handles for carrying. The pockets and handles are accessible from either the folded or unfolded state. The handbag is secured by a fastening device at the top of the bag and when undone reveals a plurality of compartments for storing articles related to a traditional diaper bag and/or a women's purse.

BACKGROUND OF INVENTION

1. Field of Invention
The present invention pertains to a diaper changing backpack that when unfastened and unfolded provides a padded changing surface with a removable handbag where an infant can be changed and related infant and parental accessories can be stored and carried in a convenient manner.
2. Description of the Related Art
Currently, there are a variety of different types of diaper bags available. Some of these products include a surface to change an infant. However, there is currently minimal integration of the diaper bag and changing surface. Further, the current products available are often bulky, cumbersome with severe limitations on convenience, accessibility and style.
A fully integrated, sleek, convenient, accessible and fashionable diaper bag is needed to carry, store and convert into an infant changing pad to provide a sanitary surface for changing an infant's diaper.
The present invention addresses the obstacles of prior art and accomplishes the current needs.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention contains certain benefits in its composition which are described in the objectives below:
The present invention provides a diaper changing backpack with a removable handbag made of a liquid impervious material. The outward appearance is that of a traditional backpack having two shoulder straps, a small front pocket and a easy-to-use fastening device, however, when unfastened the outer layer of the backpack becomes a sanitary padded surface for changing an infant's diaper thereon and the inner handbag becomes removable and may be carried and utilized as a traditional diaper bag or purse. The inner handbag has side pockets accessible from either the fastened or unfastened position, which can be used to readily access infant or parental accessories. Additionally, the inner handbag has a pair of carrying handles, which are utilized when the backpack is fastened by placing handles through the designated position in the outer layer of the diaper changing pad, and when in use as a separate diaper bag or purse. Further, the handbag is secured by a fastening device at the top of the bag, preferably a zipper, which when undone reveals a plurality of compartments, constructed within the inner lining of the handbag, which are sized to accommodate various infant products and parental accessories.
A primary objective of the present invention is to provide a convenient, accessible padded diaper changing surface which readily folds into a sleek fashionable backpack with inclusion of a removable handbag.
Another objective is to provide a comfortable sanitary padded changing surface for changing an infant's diaper.
Another objective is to provide a handbag that has a plurality of accessible compartments to accommodate infant and parental accessories.
Another objective is to provide a convenient easy-to-carry bag which may be hung or carried by the pair of inner handbag handles or backpack shoulder straps, either singularly or plural.
Additional features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the accompanying detailed description and drawings which further illustrate the functionality of the present invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Referring now to the drawings, FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, the present invention is in the fastened and folded position thereby creating the appearance of a traditional backpack. The outer layer or infant changing surface is illustrated generally by the reference numeral 10 and the inner handbag is illustrated generally by the reference numeral 30. As illustrated in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, the inner handbag 30 has a pair of handles 14, which are accessible by means of the designated opening 20 in the outer layer 10. Additionally, the inner handbag 30 has external side pockets 16 located in the same proximity on each side of the bag. These external side pockets 16 can be used to store/carry infant supplies (i.e. pacifier, small bottle, etc . . . ) or parental accessories (i.e. cell phone, keys, etc . . . ). An additional small depth pocket 18 is located on the front section of the outer layer or changing surface 10 for the storage/placement of small items (i.e. driver's license, credit card, etc . . . ). The outer layer or changing surface 10 has a pair of shoulder straps 12 for carrying the bag either singularly or plural. With reference to FIG. 2, each of the two shoulder straps 12 are affixed to the outer layer or changing surface 10 by a strap of similar material 13 and two adjustable fasteners 28 located at the bottom corners of the outer layer 10.
With additional reference to FIG. 3, the outer layer or changing surface 10 is illustrated in the fastened, by internal fastener 24, and folded, at respective top fold lines 11 and bottom fold lines 19, position with inner handbag 30 secured. An optional ornamental logo or external fastener 22 is present on the outer layer or changing surface, which may vary in shape and/or size.
Referring now to FIG. 4A, the outer layer or changing surface 10 is illustrated in the unfastened and unfolded position with the inner handbag 30 removed. The outer layer or changing surface 10 is constructed of a liquid-impervious material with internal components, preferably consisting of a padding or stiffening material, sewn together create a semi-stiff padded surface for changing an infant's diaper. The outer layer or changing surface 10 is made up of foldable sections interconnected by two fold lines at the top 11 and two fold lines at the bottom 19.
A fastening device 24 is located at the top section of the outer layer or changing surface 10. This fastening device 24 secures the inner handbag 30 within the outer layer or changing surface when in the folded and fastened position as noted in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3.
As illustrated in FIG. 4B, the inner handbag 30 is shown as removed as when the outer layer or changing surface 10 is in the unfastened and unfolded position. The pair of handles 14 is attached to the opposite sides of the main sections of the inner handbag 30 preferably with handle connectors/supports 15.
With additional reference to FIG. 5, the inner handbag 30 is secured at the top by a fastening device 32, preferably a zipper. When fastening device 32, is opened a plurality of designated compartments/pockets are available to store/carry infant supplies (i.e. diapers, wipes, bottle, etc . . . ) and parental accessories (i.e. pocketbook, make-up, etc . . . ). Internal pockets 17, located on each side, and designated compartments 34 are fitted into the internal lining of the inner handbag 30 for use as a traditional diaper bag.
From the foregoing it will be seen that this invention is one well adapted to attain all ends and objects hereinabove set forth together with the other advantages which are obvious and which are inherent to the structure.
It will be understood that certain features and subcombinations are of utility and may be employed without reference to other features and subcombinations. This is contemplated by and is within the scope of the claims.
Since many possible embodiments may be made of the invention without departing from the scope thereof, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.

Claims

1. A backpack that provides a sanitary surface for changing an infant's diaper, comprised of the following:

a flexible padded outer layer made of a semi-stiff liquid-impervious material interconnected with two main panels (front & rear), foldable or unfoldable at the top and bottom side that secure or release an inner handbag by means of an additional frontal side flap, folded at the top side, which contains a fastening device;

two shoulder straps affixed to the rear outer layer of the backpack for carrying;

a small pocket located on the front panel of the outer layer for storage;

an opening at the top side of the outer layer present for receiving a pair of handles from the inner handbag for carrying.

2. A backpack as claimed in claim 1, that secures an inner handbag for the carrying and storage of infant and parental accessories, comprised of the following:

a front and rear panel of approximate size, two side panels of equal size, a bottom side and a top side with a fastening device all of which are interconnected;

a pair of handles affixed to the front and rear panel for carrying either in the folded and fastened or unfolded position;

two pockets covering the width of each side panel present for the storage of items accessible from the folded and fastened or unfolded position.

3. A backpack as claimed in claim 2, that has an inner handbag wherein internally each of the interconnected panels has a plurality of compartments/pockets for storing infant and parental accessories.

4. A backpack as claimed in claim 1, that when unfolded becomes a diaper changing pad having a plurality of padded sections within the inner surface.

5. A backpack as claimed in claim 1, with an outer layer that folds and fastens by means of a fastening device affixed to the front panel and frontal side flap, which secures outer layer and inner handbag in the folded position.
