Abstract
A golf bag includes a body having opposite upper and lower ends and a compartment therebetween configured to contain golf clubs. A lumbar pad is coupled to the body, wherein a clearance is created between the lumbar pad and an outer covering of the bag.
Description
- This invention relates generally to baggage for being carried by a person and, more particularly, to golf bags having integrated stands to support the bag in an inclined position on a ground surface.
- While the game of golf is ever increasing in popularity, stowing and transporting golf equipment to, from, and around a golf course can be a drawback to an otherwise enjoyable experience. Traditionally, for most golfers, golf clubs are carried around the course in a bag and laid on the ground when it is the golfer's turn to play. Picking up the bag and laying it down repeatedly during a game of golf, not to mention carrying a full bag of clubs, can be tiresome and inconvenient. It can also be difficult to access the bag to insert, remove, or switch golf clubs when the bag is on the ground. While carrying straps are typically provided, most golf bags are uncomfortable to carry for an extended period of time.
- According to an exemplary embodiment, a golf bag comprises a body comprising opposite upper and lower ends and a compartment therebetween configured to contain golf clubs, and a lumbar pad coupled to the body, wherein a clearance is created between the lumbar pad and an outer covering of the bag.
- According to exemplary embodiment, a golf bag comprises a body comprising opposite upper and lower ends and a compartment therebetween configured to contain golf clubs. A lumbar is pad coupled to the body via at least one attachment member, wherein a portion of the lumber pad is suspended from an outer surface of the body in a vicinity of the lumbar pad, thereby providing an airflow path between the lumbar pad and the outer covering.
- According to another exemplary embodiment, a golf bag is provided. The bag comprises a body comprising opposite upper and lower ends and a compartment therebetween configured to contain golf clubs. A lumbar pad is coupled to the body via attachment members extending from opposite sides thereof. The attachment members support the lumber pad in a spaced relation to an outer surface of the body, thereby defining an airflow path between the lumbar pad and the outer covering for the comfort of a person carrying the bag.

FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrate agolf bag 100 in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention in a standing or substantially upright position with respect to a supportingsurface 102, which may be, for example, the earth. Thegolf bag 100 includes anelongated body 110 including anupper end 112, alower end 114, and acompartment 116 extending therebetween. Thecompartment 116 is sized and dimensioned to receive a set ofgolf clubs 120 therein such thatheads 122 of the golf clubs are positioned proximate theupper end 112 of thegolf bag 100 and the golf club grips are positioned proximate thelower end 114 of thegolf bag 100. In an exemplary embodiment, thecompartment 116 is defined by aninner liner 126 extending the length of thegolf bag 100, although it is understood that in alternative embodiments theliner 126 may extend for less than the entire length of thebag 100. Thebody 110 is includes anouter covering 128 that extends from theupper end 112 to thelower end 114 of thebody 110. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
golf bag 100 includes a self actuatingstand 124 having abase assembly 130 at thelower end 114 of thebody 110, asupport mount assembly 160 at theupper portion 112 of thebag 100, and an actuating mechanism extending therebetween as described below. As will become evident below, thestand 124 automatically extends to a deployed position when thebag 100 is placed in an inclined position as illustrated inFIG. 10 . - The
base assembly 130 includes afoot 132 and abase ring 134 attached thereto. When thegolf bag 100 is in the upright position, as illustrated inFIGS. 1 and 2 , thebase assembly 130 is firmly and solidly in contact with the supportingsurface 102. Thefoot 132 includes aplanar bottom surface 136, a plurality offootholds 138 extending from abottom 140 of theplanar bottom surface 136 and contacting the supportingsurface 102, and aside wall 142 extending from atop 144 of theplanar bottom surface 136 toward theupper end 112 of thegolf bag 100. Thebase ring 134 includes aside wall 146 that circumscribes anouter perimeter 148 of thefoot 132, as best shown inFIG. 2 . Thebase ring 134 is pivotably coupled to thefoot 132 such that when thegolf bag 100 is rotated from the upright position to the inclined position, thebase ring 134 pivots about a joint 150 which couples thefoot 132 to thebase ring 134. As thegolf bag 100 is moved between the upright and inclined positions, thefootholds 138 remain in full contact with the supportingsurface 102, thus providing stability to thebag 100 in both the upright and deployed positions. - The
support assembly 160 includes asupport mount 162,integral hinge members support mount 162,hinge brackets hinge members support legs respective brackets hinge members hinge brackets support legs respective hinge brackets support mount 162 between a stowed position and a deployed position when thebag 100 is inclined or returned to the upright position, as explained below. Thesupport assembly 160 is mounted to theupper end 112 of thebag 100 and supports thegolf bag 100 when thebag 100 is inclined (FIG. 10 ) and thesupport legs legs surface 102. - In the upright position, illustrated in
FIGS. 1 and 2 , thesupport legs outer covering 128 of thebag 100.Actuator arms hinge brackets legs -
FIG. 3 illustrates a cutaway view of thegolf bag 100 including anexemplary actuating mechanism 200 for thestand 124. Theactuating mechanism 200 includes anactivation rod 202, abrace 204, and aretention member 206. Theactivation rod 202 is a semi-rigid member that includes alower portion 210 and anupper portion 212 having a generally Y-shaped form when viewed from the front, wherein thelower portion 210 includes afirst leg 214 and asecond leg 216, and the upper portion includes thefirst actuator arm 180 and thesecond actuator arm 182 extending as continuations from therespective legs activation rod 202 is fabricated from a substantially cylindrical metal shaft which is formed to include the lower andupper portions - The
lower portion 210 of theactivation rod 202 has a generally U-shaped configuration wherein thefirst leg 214 and thesecond leg 216 extend substantially longitudinally along thebag body 210 in a spaced apart relationship and afoot portion 218 extends transversely between and interconnects thelegs foot portion 218 of theactivation rod 202 is coupled to aretention member 206 of thefoot 132, which retains theactivation rod 202 in position relative to thefoot 132. Thelegs activation rod 202 extend from thefoot portion 218 toward theupper end 112 of thegolf bag 100 and thelegs brace 204 at a distance from thefoot portion 218 of theactivation rod 202. Thebrace 204 retains eachleg activation rod 202 at apredetermined distance 222 from theopposing leg legs brace 204. As such, thebrace 204 provides rigidity and stability to theactivation rod 202, and ensures reliable operation of theactuating mechanism 200. - The
lower portion 210 of theactivation rod 202 is contained entirely within theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 100, and generally extends between theouter covering 126 and the inner liner 126 (FIG. 1 ) of thegolf bag body 110. By locating thelower portion 210 of theactivation rod 202 inside thebag 100, therod 202 is protected by theouter covering 128 and is less likely to be damaged or dislodged during transport of thebag 100. Further, the enclosedactuation rod 202 at thelower end 114 of thebag 100 provides a safer actuating mechanism by preventing access to the actuating components, and safeguarding a user's clothing or fingers, for example, from becoming pinched or caught in the mechanism. - The
upper portion 212 of theactivation rod 202 includes theactuator arms lower portion 210 of theactivation rod 202. A portion of theactuator arms legs activation rod 202 are contained within theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 100, but theactuator arms bag 100 through corresponding slits oropenings outer covering 128 of thegolf bag 100. The exterior ends of theactuator arms corresponding hinge brackets actuator arms support legs body 110 in the stowed position, or alternatively to extend thesupport legs body 110 in the deployed position when thegolf bag 100 is moved between the upright position and the inclined position. -
FIG. 4 illustrates thebase assembly 130 in the upright position wherein alongitudinal axis 111 of thebody 110 is positioned approximately perpendicular to the supportingsurface 102 above thefoot 132. Thefootholds 138 extend downwardly from a substantially planarbottom surface 136 of thefoot 132, and theside wall 142 extends upwardly from the planarbottom surface 136. Thefoot 132 is fabricated from a rigid material, such as, for example, plastic according to known techniques. Thefootholds 138 are formed with a generally flatbottom surface 238 which contacts thesupport surface 102. Theside wall 142 extends upward from the planarbottom surface 136 in a direction toward the upper end 112 (FIG. 1 ) of thegolf bag 100. In an exemplary embodiment, theside wall 142 is curvilinear and follows a curved path generally complementary to the curvature of theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 100. - The
side wall 146 of thebase ring 134 circumscribes anouter perimeter 148 of thefoot 132 and is attached to theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 100. Thebase ring 134 is connected to thefoot 132 via the joint 150 and is movable relative to thefoot 132 between the upright position and a deployed position (FIG. 8 ) when thebag 100 is inclined. Thebase ring 134 has an angular shape defined by a first andsecond ring portions outer covering 128 of thebag 100. Thering portions first ring portion 240 of thebase ring 134 extends substantially parallel to the supporting surface 102 (FIGS. 1 and 2 ) when thebag 100 is in the upright position, while thesecond ring portion 242 of thebase ring 134 is inclined or oriented at an angle with respect to the supportingsurface 102. However, when thegolf bag 100 is in the inclined position as illustrated inFIGS. 8 and 10 , thebase ring 134 is moved over thefoot 132 via thehinge 150 such that thesecond ring portion 242 of thebase ring 134 extends substantially parallel with the supportingsurface 102 and thefirst ring portion 240 is oriented at an angle with respect to the supportingsurface 102. Thus, when thegolf bag 100 is moved between the inclined and the upright positions, thebase ring 134 pivots over thefoot 132 accordingly while thefoot 132 remains in a stationary position relative to the supportingsurface 102. - Each of the first and
second ring portions footholds 244 extending downwardly therefrom, which align with thefootholds 138 of thefoot 132 to further support thebase assembly 130 in the upright and deployed positions.Center footholds 245 are also provided between thering portions base ring 134 is attached to thefoot 132. Thus, when thegolf bag 100 is in the upright position ofFIG. 4 , thefootholds 244 extending from thefirst ring portion 240 and thecenter footholds 245 of thebase ring 134 are in contact with the supportingsurface 102 to stabilize and support the full weight of thegolf bag 100 and relieve pressure on the joint 150. As thegolf bag 100 is inclined (FIGS. 8 and 10 ), thebase ring 134 rotates or pivots over thefoot 132 until thefootholds 244 extending from thesecond ring portion 242 of thebase ring 134 are in contact with the supportingsurface 102 and support thegolf bag 100 on thelower end 114 while thesupport legs bag 100 on theupper end 112, thereby reducing the stress on the joint 150. In either position of thebag 100, thefootholds 138 associated with thefoot 132 remain in full contact with the supportingsurface 102, thereby providing stability to thebag 100 in the upright position, the inclined position, and intermediate positions. -
FIG. 5 illustrates an exemplary embodiment of thefoot 132 including theretention member 206 coupled to and extending from a top 256 of theside wall 142, first andsecond pegs side wall 142, and a pair offastener elements 256 coupled to the planarbottom surface 136 between opposing portions of theside wall 142. Theside wall 142 extends upwardly from a top 144 of the planarbottom surface 136 and extends generally away from the supporting surface 102 (FIGS. 1 and 2 ), and the planarbottom surface 136 extends continuously within the confines of theside wall 142. Thebottom surface 136 and theside wall 142 are fabricated in an exemplary embodiment from a rigid plastic material in a unitary construction which maintains the shape of thefoot 132 and capably supports the weight of thegolf bag 100 when loaded with clubs and golf gear. - The top 254 of the
side wall 142 is sloped and generally defines opposite raised ends 251 and 253 and recessedsides side wall 142. The recessedsides FIG. 4 ) located approximately at the low point of the valley. The angle of the valley substantially corresponds to the angle between thering portions FIG. 4 ). - The joint 150 includes first and
second pegs corresponding openings base ring 134, as shown inFIG. 6 . The first andsecond pegs side wall 142 outwardly or away from the interior of thefoot 132. Thepegs foot 132, and are retained by theopenings base ring 134, as described below. In an exemplary embodiment, thepegs foot 132, although it is contemplated that they may be provided separately in other embodiments. - As illustrated in
FIG. 5 , theretention member 206 extends upwardly from thetop wall 254 of thefoot 132 at the raisedend 253 and is substantially centered between the valleys of the recessedsides sidewall 142. In use, the foot portion 218 (FIG. 3 ) of theactivation rod 202 is coupled to theretention member 206 such that theactivation rod 202 can be pivoted about theretention member 206 while being retained therein. In an exemplary embodiment, theretention member 206 is, for example, aclip 264 having aninner surface 266 defining aslot 268. Theclip 264 has alength 270 which is approximately equal to thewidth 272 of thefoot portion 218 of theactivation rod 202, as shown inFIG. 3 , such that theactivation rod 202 can be inserted into theslot 268 defined by theinner surface 266 of theclip 264. However, other types ofretention members 206 can be utilized to retain theactivation rod 202 in contact with thefoot 132, such as, for example, a strap, or another fastener familiar to those in the art. - The
fasteners 256 are coupled to the top 144 of the planarbottom surface 136 and are used to fasten a bottom portion 284 (FIG. 6 ) of theinner liner 126 to the planarbottom surface 136 of thefoot 132. In an exemplary embodiment, thefasteners 256 are, for example, commercially available Velcro® brand fastener strips. Other types offasteners 256, however, can be used, such as, for example, an interlocking device, a rivet, a locking mechanism, a tying system, or a clip. -
FIG. 6 illustrates an exploded view of thelower end 114 of thegolf bag 100 including theouter cover 128, theinner liner 126, thebase ring 134, and thefoot 132. Thering portions base ring 134 are coupled to theouter cover 128 of thegolf bag 100 using a knownfastener 274, such as, for example, a snap fastener. However, other knownfasteners 274 can be utilized such as, by way of example only, an interlocking device, a rivet, a hook and loop fastener, a locking mechanism, a tying system, or a clip. Thefoot 132 is coupled to thebase ring 134 at the joint 150 via thepegs foot 132 and the correspondingopenings base ring 134. In an alternative embodiment, thepegs base ring 134 and theopenings foot 132 in lieu of the above-described embodiment. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
inner liner 126 includes anouter perimeter 282 complementary in shape to theouter covering 128 and which is located adjacent to theouter covering 128. Abottom portion 284 of theinner liner 126 encloses the compartment 116 (FIG. 1 ) for housing thegolf clubs 120. Thebottom portion 284 of theinner liner 126 includesfasteners 286 coupled thereto for interfacing with thefasteners 256 coupled to thefoot 132. In an exemplary embodiment thefasteners 286 associated with theinner liner 126 are, for example, Velcro® brand fastener strips. However, other types of fasteners can be used, such as, for example, an interlocking device, a locking mechanism, a tying system, or a clip. Thefasteners 286 of theinner liner 126 couple thebottom portion 284 of theinner liner 126 to the planarbottom surface 136 of thefoot 132. As such, the bottom of thecompartment 116 of thebag 100 substantially corresponds to the bottom surface 136 (FIG. 5 ) of thefoot 132. -
FIG. 7 illustrates thebase assembly 130 wherein the plurality offootholds 138 are dispersed around theouter perimeter 148 of the planarbottom surface 136. Thefirst ring portion 240 of thebase ring 134 has aperimeter 288 that is substantially similar and adjacent to theouter perimeter 148 of thefoot 132, while thesecond ring portion 244 is angled with respect to the bottomplanar surface 136 of thefoot 132. Thebase ring 134 is coupled to thefoot 132 at the joint 150, wherein thepegs foot 132 into theopenings base ring 134. Thefoot 132 encloses the entirelower end 114 of thebody 110 of thegolf bag 100, and thereby protects the actuation mechanism 200 (FIG. 3 ) at the lower end of the bag with therigid bottom surface 136. -
FIG. 8 illustrates thebase assembly 130 when thegolf bag 100 is in the inclined position wherein thebase ring 134 has been pivoted about the joint 150 (FIG. 4 ). Notably, thefoot 132 remains in a stationary position corresponding to the position of thefoot 132 when thegolf bag 100 is in the upright position (FIG. 4 ). That is, thefoot 132 does not move in relation to the supportingsurface 102 when thebody 110 is moved between the upright and inclined positions. As illustrated inFIG. 8 , thefootholds 138 maintain contact with the supportingsurface 102, and theforward-most footholds 244 associated with thebase ring 134 are also in supporting contact with the supportingsurface 102. - A portion of the
actuating mechanism 200 is illustrated in phantom inFIG. 8 , showing the position and attachment of theactivation rod 202 in relation to thefoot 132, theinner liner 126, and theouter covering 128. Theactivation rod 202 is pivotably coupled to theretention member 206, and when thegolf bag 100 is moved to the inclined position, the position of the various bag components, such as, for example, thebase ring 134 and theouter covering 128, change in relation to the position of theactivation rod 202 thereby activating theactuating mechanism 200 to deploy thelegs -
FIG. 9 is a perspective view of thesupport mount 162, hingemembers brackets corresponding support legs support mount 162 is coupled to the exterior of thegolf bag body 110 and is located proximate to theupper end 112 of thebody 110. Thesupport mount 126 includes afirst end 290, asecond end 292, and acentral bridge portion 294 extending therebetween. Thehinge members support mount 126. In an exemplary embodiment, theends hinge members bridge portion 294 are integrally formed and fabricated from metal, such as aluminum. - Interlocking
hinge elements 296 extend from each of thehinge members hinge brackets hinge brackets support member 126. Thehinge brackets bag 100 when thegolf bag 100 is in the upright position and are in a deployed position when thegolf bag 100 is in the inclined position. In an exemplary embodiment, the interlockinghinge elements 296 form a piano hinge with thehinge brackets fingers 302 extend from each of thehinge members hinge brackets fingers 302 overlap and interlock in a dovetail arrangement such that thehinge members hinge brackets fingers - As illustrated in
FIG. 9 , theactuator arms golf bag 100 throughrespective slits outer covering 128. Theactuator arms respective hinge brackets fastener 304, such as, for example, a pin or bolt. However, other knownfasteners 304 can be utilized. As further illustrated inFIG. 9 , thesupport legs hinge brackets support mount 126 towards thelower end 114 of thegolf bag 100. -
FIG. 10 illustrates thegolf bag 100 in the inclined position with thelegs actuating mechanism 200 is engaged, or activated, when thegolf bag 100 is rotated from the upright position (FIGS. 1 and 2 ) to the inclined position (FIG. 10 ), wherein thebase ring 134 is pivoted upon thefoot 132. As such, the relative position of thebase ring 134 and theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 100 change with respect to theretention member 206 and theactivation rod 202. Due to this change in position of thegolf bag 100 relative to theactivation rod 202, theactuator arms upper portion 112 of thebag 100, thereby forcing more of theactuator arms golf bag 100 and causing theactuator arms hinge brackets support legs support legs legs bag 100 is inclined. As thelegs shoes 306 coupled to thelegs surface 102 and capably support thegolf bag 100 in the inclined position while thefootholds 138 remain in a stationary position in full contact with the supportingsurface 102. As thebag 100 is moved back toward the upright position, theactuator arms support legs -
FIG. 11 illustrates an alternative embodiment of agolf bag 400 having anactuating mechanism 402 including anactivation rod 404 attached to the planarbottom surface 136 of thefoot 132, aninternal stay 406 attached to thebase ring 134, anactuator 408 attached to theactivation rod 404, and the first andsecond actuator arms actuator 408. Theactuating mechanism 402 is engaged, or activated, when thegolf bag 400 is rotated from the upright position to the deployed position, and theactuating mechanism 402 is located interior to theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 400, which hides the components for protection, safety and reliability. - The
golf bag 400 includes a plurality ofinternal stays 406 which support thegolf bag 400, giving thegolf bag 400 its shape. In one embodiment thestays 406 are cylindrical and hollow and have a length such that afirst end 412 and asecond end 414 of theinternal stay 406 extend from thelower end 114 of thegolf bag 400 to theupper end 112 of thegolf bag 400 respectively. The internal stays 406 are contained within the outer covering 128 of thegolf bag 400 so as to not be exposed to external elements. In an exemplary embodiment, thestays 406 are connected to thebase ring 134. Thegolf bag 400 has a singleshaft activation rod 404 which is located interior to theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 400, and more specifically, is located at least partially within the hollow cavity of theinternal stay 406. However, in the upright position, the lower portion of theactivation rod 404 extends beyond thefirst end 412 of theinternal stay 406 to the planarbottom surface 136 where it is pivotably coupled to aretention member 420 connected to thefoot 132. - As illustrated in
FIG. 11 , theactivation rod 404 is a single cylindrical shaft having a single longitudinal axis extending within theinternal stay 406 towards theupper end 112 of thegolf bag 400. Theactivation rod 404 has afirst end 422 coupled to theretention member 420, and a second end 424 located proximate to theupper end 112 of thegolf bag 400. When thegolf bag 400 is rotated to the inclined position, theinternal stay 406, which is coupled to thebase ring 134, is moved downward adistance 430 along the rod longitudinal axis until the stayfirst end 412 and the rodfirst end 422 are adjacent. - A sliding
actuator 408 is located proximate to the second end 424 of the activation rod, and in one embodiment, is coupled to the second end 424 and surrounds theinternal stay 406 such that theactuator 408 is moveable relative to theinternal stay 406. Theactuator 408 is contained within the outer covering 128 of thegolf bag 400. Theactuating mechanism 402 includes the first andsecond actuator arms first end 442 and asecond end 444. In an illustrative embodiment, the first ends 442 of theactuator arms actuator 408. Theactuator arms outer covering 128 to the exterior of thebag 400 throughcorresponding slits outer covering 128 in a V-configuration. The second ends 444 of theactuator arms corresponding hinge brackets - In use, when the
golf bag 400 is moved to the inclined position, as described above, theinternal stay 406 moves downward on the cylindrical shaft of theactivation rod 404 thepredetermined distance 430. Correspondingly, thesecond end 414 of theinternal stay 406, or more particularly thesupport assembly 160, moves downward thesame distance 430 such that theactuator 408 and thesupport mount 162 are forced relatively closer to each other. Due to this decrease in relative distance between the actuator 408 and thesupport mount 162, theactuator arms corresponding hinge brackets legs golf bag 400 and into the support position. -
FIG. 12 illustrates another embodiment of agolf bag 500 having anactuating mechanism 502 including asingle activation rod 504 rotatably coupled to thetop wall 254 of thefoot 132, aninternal stay 506 attached to thebase ring 134, anactuator 508 coupled to theactivation rod 504, and the first andsecond actuator arms actuator 508. Theactuating mechanism 502 is engaged, or activated, when thegolf bag 500 is rotated from the upright position to the inclined position. Theactuating mechanism 502 is located interior to theouter covering 128 of thegolf bag 500, which hides the components for protection, safety and reliability. - The
activation rod 504 has afirst end 512 and asecond end 514 such that thefirst end 512 is rotatably coupled to aretention member 516 located at thetop wall 254 of thefoot 132, and thesecond end 514 is located proximate to theupper end 112 of thegolf bag 500. When thegolf bag 500 is in the upright position, thefirst end 512 of theactivation rod 504 and afirst end 518 of theinternal stay 506 are adjacent to one another. However, when thegolf bag 500 is transferred to the deployed position theinternal stay 506 is moved downward adistance 520 along the outer periphery of thefoot side wall 142 towards thesupport surface 102, and is positioned remotely with respect to thefirst end 512 of theactivation rod 504 which remains fixed at thetop wall 254 relative to thesupport surface 102. - The
actuator 508 is located proximate to thesecond end 514 of theactivation rod 504, and in one embodiment, is coupled to thesecond end 514. Theactuator 508 is contained within the outer covering 128 of thegolf bag 500. Afirst end 526 of eachactuator arm actuator 508. Theactuator arms outer covering 128 to the exterior of thebag 500 throughcorresponding slits 226 and 228 (FIG. 11 ), or openings, in theouter covering 128 in a V-configuration. Asecond end 528 of eachactuator arm corresponding hinge bracket - In use, when the
golf bag 500 is moved to the inclined position, as described above, theinternal stay 506 moves downward thedistance 520 relative to theactivation rod 504. Correspondingly, asecond end 530 of theinternal stay 506, or more particularly thesupport assembly 160, moves a substantially similar distance downward towards theactuator 508 forcing theactuator 508 and thesupport mount 162 to be positioned relatively closer to each other. Due to this decrease in relative distance between the actuator 508 and thesupport mount 162, theactuator arms corresponding hinge brackets legs golf bag 500 and into the support position. - Also, and as illustrated in
FIG. 12 , thebase ring 134 is coupled to thefoot 132 via asolid axle 532 to form a pivoting joint 150 in lieu of thepegs 250 and 252 (shown inFIG. 5 ). -
FIG. 13 is a perspective view of thegolf bag 100 illustrating alumbar member 550 which may be used with, for example, any of the foregoing golf bags, such as thegolf bag 100. Thelumbar member 550 includes a paddedportion 552, having afront side 554 and aback side 556, and a plurality ofattachment members 558 extending from the paddedportion 552. The paddedportion 552 of thelumbar member 550 is positioned on thegolf bag 100 such that, while thegolf bag 100 is being carried by the golfer, thefront side 554 of the paddedportion 552 contacts the lower back or side of the golfer giving an added layer of comfort for the golfer. In an exemplary embodiment, thelumbar member 550 is movable and can be adjusted by the golfer to a desired position. - In an illustrative embodiment, the
lumbar member 550 is attached to thegolf bag 100 by fastening the plurality ofattachment members 558 using a Velcro® brand fastener 560. However, other types of fasteners can be utilized, such as, for example, an interlocking device, a tab and slot device, a locking mechanism, a tying system, or a clip. In an alternative embodiment, the back side of the paddedportion 552 has an attachment member, such as a Velcro® brand fastener. However, other types of attachment members can be used, such as, for example, an interlocking device, a hook and pile fastener, a tab and slot device, a locking mechanism, a magnet, a tying system, or a clip. - In an illustrative embodiment the
lumbar member 550, and specifically the paddedportion 552, is fastened to the bag in a manner wherein a clearance is created between anouter covering 562 of the bag and theback side 556 of the padded portion. That is, the paddedportion 562 is suspended upon theattachment members 558 in a spaced position from theouter cover 562 of the bag. The clearance or space therebetween defines an airflow path, generally indicated by thearrows 564, for airflow between thelumbar member 558 and the outer covering of thebag 100. The airflow path provides a cushioning effect when the bag is carried, such as with a shoulder harness (not shown) or carrying straps (not shown), with thelumbar member 550 resting upon a lower back region of the person carrying the bag. Theairflow path 564 further provides a cooling effect when the bag is carried by the user by permitting airflow in the vicinity of thelumbar member 550. -
FIG. 13 also illustratespockets 560 which may be used with thegolf bag 100. Thepockets 560 are attached to theouter covering 562 of thegolf bag 100 and are sized to receive golfing accessories therein. - While the invention has been described in terms of various specific embodiments, those skilled in the art will recognize that the invention can be practiced with modification within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Claims (14)
1. A golf bag comprising:
a body comprising opposite upper and lower ends and a compartment therebetween configured to contain golf clubs; and
a lumbar pad coupled to said body, wherein a clearance is created between said lumbar pad and an outer covering of said bag.
2. A golf bag in accordance with claim 1 wherein said lumbar pad is positioned proximate said upper end of said bag.
3. A golf bag in accordance with claim 1 wherein said lumbar pad comprises a pad portion and opposite attachment portions, said pad portion suspended from said attachment portions at a distance from said outer covering.
4. A golf bag in accordance with claim 3 comprising four attachment members.
5. A golf bag in accordance with claim 1 wherein said bag further comprises a self actuating stand having at least one support leg.
6. A golf bag in accordance with claim 5 further comprising an actuating mechanism, said actuating mechanism substantially concealed by said outer covering.
7. A golf bag comprising:
a body comprising opposite upper and lower ends and a compartment therebetween configured to contain golf clubs; and
a lumbar pad coupled to said body via at least one attachment member, wherein a portion of said lumber pad is suspended from an outer surface of said body in a vicinity of said lumbar pad, thereby providing an airflow path between said lumbar pad and said outer covering.
8. A golf bag in accordance with claim 7 wherein said lumbar pad is positioned proximate said upper end of said bag.
9. A golf bag in accordance with claim 7 wherein said lumbar pad comprises a pad portion and opposite attachment portions, said pad portion suspended from said attachment portions at a distance from said outer covering.
10. A golf bag in accordance with claim 7 wherein said bag further comprises a self actuating stand having at least one support leg.
11. A golf bag in accordance with claim 7 further comprising an actuating mechanism, said actuating mechanism substantially concealed by said outer covering.
12. A golf bag in accordance with claim 7 further comprising a base actuation assembly coupled to said body at said lower end, said lumbar pad spaced from said base actuation assembly.
13. A golf bag comprising:
a body comprising opposite upper and lower ends and a compartment therebetween configured to contain golf clubs; and
a lumbar pad coupled to said body via attachment members extending from opposite sides thereof, said attachment members support said lumber pad in a spaced relation to an outer surface of said body, thereby defining an airflow path between said lumbar pad and said outer covering for the comfort of a person carrying the bag..
14. A golf bag in accordance with claim 13 further comprising at least one support leg selectively positionable between a support position for supporting said bag and a stowed position alongside said body.
