Abstract
A peep light support apparatus and method providing a telescoping staff assembly including an upper staff member, a steering light mounted near the top of the upper staff, and a clamp device capable of mounting a base portion of the staff assembly to a barge. Some embodiments include a bow amber light supported on the staff assembly. Some embodiment include lashing ties on the staff assembly. Another embodiment includes a watertight electrical system for providing power to the steering light. An exemplary method includes supporting a steering light on a barge bow using a staff assembly including an upper staff member that supports the steering light, and provides clamping and lashing down the staff assembly to the barge. A portable shield system including a navigation light wherein the shield includes an aluminum base, back, and side walls, and a fastener to fasten the assembly to a barge.
Description
- This application is a continuation under 37 C.F.R. 1.53(b) of U.S. application Ser. No. 10/765,560 filed Jan. 27, 2004, which claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 60/474,645 filed May 30, 2003, which applications are incorporated herein by reference and made a part hereof.
- This invention pertains generally to barges, and more particularly to steering a barge using a peep light.
- Peep or steering lights are used to assist in the steering of a barge. The peep light is supported on the bow of the forward-most barge of a group of barges being pushed by a tug boat, typically on a pole to hold the peep light at a desired height. The tug boat captain can then use the peep light to visually gauge the position or direction of the barges as the tug boat pushes the barges.

FIGS. 1A and 1B there is shown abarge 100 pushed by atug boat 102, wherein a peep light 104 (alternately referred to as a blue steering or swing light) and bow navigation light 107 (for example a 225 degree yellow flashing light) are positioned on thebow 106 of thebarge 100, for example a dry cargo barge, using the peeplight mounting system 200 according to one example embodiment of the invention. Barge 100 includes barge cargo covers 103,stationary barge rigging 108,barge deck fittings 110, and starboard and port 112 ½″ degree navigation lights 111 a and 111 b supported on aportable shield system 300. - Referring now to
FIGS. 2-6 , there is illustrated peeplight support system 200 according to one example embodiment of the invention. Referring toFIGS. 2 a, 2 b and 2 c there are illustrated several different side views of thesystem 200. The support system includes abase staff 218 mounted on abase plate 219, a telescopingupper staff 202, an adjustablebarge coaming fastener 204, and adjustable peep light 206 (alternatively referred to as a steering light), watertightelectrical outlets 208, watertightbow navigation light 210,lashing tie rings 212, and height adjustment setscrews 214. Peep light 206 is preferably a 135 degree blue light. Thebow navigation light 210 is preferably amber, for example a Perko 1111 ME amber light. - As shown in more detail in
FIG. 3 , a steeringlight dimmer switch 216 is also provided in one embodiment on thebase staff 218, preferably made of 2″ tube aluminum construction and 8′ long. Also, a commercialring buoy holder 220 is also provided onbase staff 218 abovebow navigation light 210.Light 210 includes, in one example embodiment, a 2 ¾″ guard post 210 a, ½″×10″ light anchor rods 210 b, a ⅜×8×10″ light mounting plate 210 c, a ⅜″×4″ gusset plate 210 d, held in place with ⅜″ weld beads, and a 120 V supply line 210 e. Theupper staff 202 is preferably 1 ½″ aluminum tube construction and 8′ long. - As shown in
FIG. 4 , thebarge fastner 204, used to fasten thebase staff 218 to the combing of a barge cargo cover (forexample cover 107 shown inFIG. 1A and 1B ), includes a 6-8″ C-clamp 217 that is itself fastened on thebase staff 218 with aclamp 222, having sides 222 a and 222 b, that are held together with nut and bolts 223 a, 223 b and 223 c, and can be adjusted up and down thebase staff 218 to adjust its height. In this example embodiment, thebarge fastener 204 includes a ⅜×3″ fat bar 225 including several bolt holes through which the bolts pass. According to another example embodiment of thebarge fastener 204 not illustrated, two C-clamps are provided, each spaced apart to provided two points of attachment to the comb of the barge cargo cover 107 (seeFIG. 1A and 1B ). -
FIG. 5 illustrates in more detail thelashing tie rings 213 and setscrews 214 that are used to secure the telescopingupper staff 202 in a fixed position at a desired height. Setscrews 214 are threaded through 3″ W×4″ L×⅜″plates 215. According to one embodiment, the staff is sized to provide that the peep light can be positioned anywhere between 15 and 18 feet above the deck of the barge. Lashingrack arms 212 are also provided. - As illustrated in
FIG. 6 , thepeep light 206 is mounted on top of theupper staff 202, with an electrical conduit running down the center of thestaffs base staff 218.Flag mounting rings 224 are also provided for flying a flag on theupper staff 202. - In use, the
system 200 can be clamped to a barge usingbarge fastener 204, and in addition lashed to the barge using rope or other line, using the lashing tie rignts 212. Power is supplied to the peep light from an on-board power conduit and through thesupport system 200 electrical system. - Thus, according to at least one embodiment of the invention, the peep light support system includes the following features:

- telescoping upper staff allowing adjustable peep light height
- easy mounting using C-clamp and lashing system
- watertight electrical system
- light weight construction
- sturdy construction
- Referring to
FIGS. 7A, 7B , 7C, 7D and 7E there is illustrated an example embodiment ofportable shield system 300. Theport shield system 302 shown inFIG. 7A includes a port navigation light (red) 304, for example found in the Perko catalog as part number 1372.Shield system 302 includes analuminum base 306 and aluminum back andside walls FIG. 7D with respect tosystem 320. - Shown in
FIGS. 7B (end view), 7C (top view) and 7D (side view), there is illustrated starboardportable shield system 320.System 302 is constructed in the same manner assystem 320 except for being reversed in orientation to accommodate the port as opposed to the starboard side of the barge. Theport shield system 302 shown inFIG. 7A includes aport navigation light 304, for example found in the Perko catalog as part number 1372.Shield system 320 includes analuminum base 324 and aluminum back andside walls port shield system 320 includes a starboard navigation light (green) 322, for example found in the Perko catalog as part number 1372. Six inch C-clamps 330 a and 330 b (FIG. 7E illustrates a C-clamp in more detail) are fastened to the bottom ofbase 324, for example by welding, and are positioned to enable the shield system to be clamped to the comb of a barge cover, for example a cover 107 (seeFIGS. 1A and 1B ).
Claims (14)
1. Apparatus comprising:
a telescoping staff assembly including an upper staff member;
a steering light mounted near the top of the upper staff member;
a fastener device capable of mounting a base portion of the staff assembly to a barge.
2. Apparatus comprising:
a staff assembly including a staff member;
a steering light mounted near the top of the staff member;
a fastener device capable of mounting a base portion of the staff assembly to a barge.
3. Apparatus comprising:
a telescoping staff assembly including an upper staff member;
a barge steering light mounted near the top of the upper staff member.
a fastener device capable of mounting a base portion of the staff assembly to a barge.
4. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the fastener is clamped to the staff assembly.
5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the fastener is adapted to clamp to a coaming on a barge.
6. Apparatus according to claim 1 further including a bow amber light supported on the telescoping staff assembly.
7. Apparatus according to claim 1 further including lashing ties on the staff assembly.
8. Apparatus according to claim 1 further including a watertight electrical system for providing power to the steering light.
9. A method comprising:
supporting a steering light on the bow of a barge using a telescoping staff assembly that includes an upper staff member that supports the steering light; and
further including clamping the telescoping staff assembly to the barge and lashing it down.
10. A method according to claim 9 further including supporting a bow amber light on the telescoping staff assembly.
11. A method according to claim 9 further including using lashing ties on the staff assembly.
12. A method according to claim 9 further including using a watertight electrical system for providing power to the steering light.
13. A method comprising supporting a steering light on the bow of a barge using a telescoping staff assembly that includes an upper staff member that supports the steering light.
14. Apparatus comprising a portable shield system including a navigation light wherein the shield includes an aluminum base and aluminum back and side walls, and further including a fastener to fasten the assembly to a barge.
