TOILET SEAT HINGE Filed March 1'7, 1954 Patented June 4, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFECE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to hinge structures and more particularly to a hinge for a toilet seat.
An object of this invention is to provide in a toilet seat hinge means whereby the seat may be readily and easily removed from the bowl.
Another object of this invention is to provide a means for mounting the hinge of a toilet seat on the bowl in a manner whereby the seat may be removed from the bowl without unthreading any part of the hinge structure.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a hinge structure of this type means permanently secured to the bowl for removably receiving a portion of the hinge so that the seat structure can be removed for cleaning or other purposes.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a toilet seat hinge construction in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the views, the numeral I designates generally a post for a toilet seat hinge which has a base flange H formed integral therewith. The post I0 in the present instance has a pintle or trunnion 13 secured to the upper portion thereof, which pintle is a part of a conventional toilet seat hinge structure. pintle i3 secured to or formed with the upper end of the post 10, I do not wish to be limited to this particular structure as, if desired, the post l0 may be provided with a socket or recess to receive the pintle It. A stud i2 is formed with the post I0 and this stud, in the present instance, is formed substantially round in transverse section and provided longitudinally thereof with a flat face M.
A socket member, generally designated as l5, loosely engages about the stud l2 and is adapted to be permanently secured to the rear portion of a toilet bowl. The socket member l5 comprises a tubular member 16 which is provided longitudinally thereof with a flat portion I! to slidably receive the flat portion 14 of the stud I2 and hold the stud I 2 against turning within the tubular member 16 while permitting free sliding move-'- ment thereof. ed to engage the upper face of the bowl. A rubber gasket I9 is adapted to be interposed between the flange l8 and the top of the bowl. The lower por; tion or the tubular member H5 is provided with a threaded and slightly reduced portion 20, and a washer 2| engages the shoulder 22 formed by reducing the lower end of the tubular member l5, and this washer is held tightly against'the bottom of the rear portion of the bowl by means of a nut 23 threaded onto the reduced portion 20 of the tubular socket member l6.
In the use of this device, the socket member if:
is adapted to be permanently attached to the rear portion of the bowl by tightening the nut 23. The post i0 is operatively engaged with the seat structure in any conventional manner and the stud i2 is then mounted in the socket 95 with the flat portion thereof contacting with the fiat portion ll of the socket l5. The flat portion ll of the socket member l5 will hold the stud i2 against turning movement While the stud 62 may be moved longitudinally of the socket member 15, as may be desired. Normally, the flange ii of the post 50 will rest on top of'the flange ii? of the socket member i5, but when it is desired to clean the upper portion of the bowl around the hinge structure, the seat carrying the post I0 and the stud l2 may be Withdrawn from the socket i5, thereby permitting the easy cleaning of the rear portion of the bowl structure.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the stud l2 may be formed with the flat side M by taking the conventional threaded stud which is provided in hinge structures at present available and then forming a flat face longitudinally of the stud or bolt. The socket Hi can then be mounted in the rear portion of the bowl so that it will be possible to make present hinge structures removable by the use of the socket structure herein disclosed.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a toilet seat hinge including a pintle for the hinge, a post for holding the pintle in upwardly spaced relation to the toilet bowl, a flange integral with the post, a stud integral with the post, said stud being substantially round in transverse section and having a fiat face extending longitudinally thereof and means for removably mounting said stud in the toilet bowl, said mounting means comprising a substantially cylindrical socket member having a flat surface longitudinally thereof to slidably receive said stud and holding said stud against turning, a flange integral with the upper end of said cylindrical socket member, a gasket interposed between said socket flange and the top of the bowl, a reduced threaded lower end portion formed on said socket member, a washer engaging against the shoulder formed between the reduced threaded portion of the socket member and the remaining portion of the socket member, and a nut threadedly engaging said threaded portion of the socket member for permanently securing said socket member in the bowl.

In a toilet seat hinge including a pintle for the hinge, a post for holding the pintle in up-' Wardly spaced relation to the toilet bowl, a flange integral with the post, a stud integral with the post, and a socket member adapted to be mounted on a bowl structure, said stud being substantially round in transverse section and having a fiat longitudinally extending face, said socket having a substantially cylindrical bore provided with a longitudinally disposed fiat portion to hold the stud against turning.
3. In a toilet seat hinge including a pintle for the hinge, a post for holding the pintle in upwardly spaced relation to the toilet bowl, a flange integral with the post, a stud integral with the post, a socket member adapted to be mounted on a bowl structure, said stud being substantially round in transverse section and having a flat longitudinally extending face, said socket having a substantially cylindrical bore provided with a longitudinally disposed fiat portion to hold the stud against turning, and means engaging the lower end of the socket to hold the socket against longitudinal movement relative to the bowl.
