Abstract

A backpack designed to carry school books and supples and is structured to mount inside a school locker in an open position allowing access to all school books, notebooks and other supplies. When taken out of the locker, the locker pack closes to secure its contents. Padded shoulder straps allows the pack to be carried on the students back. A back panel has a pocket for inserting at least one of a level 4 bullet proof carbon fiber panel, corrugated plastic/card board panel for additional structural support, books, notebooks, and a notebook computer.

Description

  • This application claims priority from provisional patent application Serial No. ______, filed May 7, 2001.[0001]
    • FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The invention relates to back packs, and more particularly to a back pack configured to be placed in a school locker and be arranged in an open position to provide easy access to school supplies and books. [0002]
    • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Backpacks are designed for carrying many type of objects. The examples give here are not intended to be representative of all types of backpacks, but are given only by way of example to show the background of the invention. [0003]
  • U.S. Pat. No. 6,367,674, describes a sports backpack that may carry various sport items such as a ball bat, balls, and a water bottle. [0004]
  • U.S. Pat. No. D453,873, shows a particular design for a backpack. [0005]
  • U.S. Pat. No. 6,347,730, describes a backpack without sides. [0006]
  • U.S. Pat. No. 5,950,895, describes a backpack that has closed compartments for storing various items in a primary compartment and several secondary compartments. [0007]
    • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The invention is a backpack designed to carry school books and supples and is structured to mount inside a school locker in an open position allowing access to all school books, notebooks and other supplies. When taken out of the locker, the locker pack may be closed to secure its contents, and carried as a back pack. Padded shoulder straps allows the pack to be carried on the students back. A removable panel may be placed in the pack to provide support structure for the pack in the locker. A level 4 bullet proof carbon fiber panel may be used for the panel, or corrugated plastic or card board panel may be used for the structural support. [0008]

    • DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
  • FIG. 1 is a drawing of the [0017] backpack 10 of the present invention. Pack 10 includes a back panel 19 (FIG. 2), two side panels 11 and 12, two front panels 13 and 14, and a top closing flap 15 (FIG. 3). Several small compartments are on the front of the pack (FIG. 1), one each 16 a and 16 b on front panels 13 and 14, respectively, and compartment 17 on flap 15. There are two shoulder straps 51 (FIG. 6) on each side of the back and a waist strap 52 (FIG. 6)
  • FIG. 2 is a wire frame representation of the [0018] backpack 10. Back 19 is shown with side panels 11 and 12 positioned at approximately 90 degree angles from back 19. Front panels 13 and 14 are partially closed. Top flap 15 (FIG. 3) is shown in a raised position, but is closed downward over panels 13 and 14 when pack 10 is closed for carrying.
  • FIG. 3 shows the inside of [0019] pack 10 in an open position. Side panels 11 and 12 and front panels 13 and 14 are shown opened, showing the various compartments inside of pack 10. Front panel 14 has, for example, compartments 27, 28 and 29. Front panel 13 has, for example, compartments 30 and 31. The compartments in front panels 13 and 14 may vary in size and number.
  • The inside of [0020] pack panel 19 has several compartments, for example, compartment 38 may be used for the storage of pencils and other items, for example, and erasers, glue, and other school supplies. Above compartment 38 maybe one or more compartments 36 for the storage and carrying of paper and note books.
  • Attached to the bottom and top of [0021] back panel 19 are two straps 26 and 25. Straps 26 and 25 are secured together by a fastener, not illustrated. The fastener may be, for example, a buckle or hook and loop. Straps 26 and 25 are connected when the back pack is being transported.
  • FIG. 4 is a front view of [0022] back pack 10 with the front panels 13 and 14 closed, and top panel 15 open. Front panels 13 and 14 are secured closed by buckles 40, 41 and 42. Buckles 40, 41 and 42 are attached to straps 44, 47 and 43 respectively. Straps 44, 47 and 43 extend around front panels 13 and 14, side panels 11 and 12, and back panel 19. Straps 44, 47 and 43 are secured to the front, side and back panels to add support to the back pack, and are loose only at the ends attached to the buckles 40,41 and 42. Top panel 15, when in the closed position, is held in place by hook and loop fastener pieces 61, 62, also known as Velcro®, on the inside of top panel 15, which attached to hook and loop pieces 63 and 64 secured to strap 47, on each side of buckle 41.
  • As an alternative or complement to securing the top panel in [0023] downward position buckle 71 and strap 70 can be used to secure the right side of top panel 15,and strap 72 and buckle 73 can be used to secure the left side of top panel 15 as shown in FIG. 5. When top panel 5 is secured in a down, closed position, compartments 16 a, 16 b and 17 are available for storage. A handle 55 may be attached to the top flap 15.
  • FIG. 6 is a side view of [0024] Pack 10 in a closed condition. Shown is one of shoulder strap 51 and waist strap 52. A shoulder strap 51 is placed over each shoulder, mounting back pack 10 on the wearer's back, and waist strap 52 is secured around the waist.
  • FIG. 7 shows the back of [0025] back pack 10 with back panel 19, side panels 11 and 12, and front panels 13 and 14 in a flat open position. Each of panels 14, 11, 19, 12 and 13 have support panels (not illustrated) sewed withing them to add strength and support to the panels. Brace and support straps 44 and 43 are shown extending horizontally across all the panels, and straps 45 and 46 extend at an angle from strap 44 to strap 43. The two parts of buckles 40, 41 and 42 are shown at their respective ends of straps 44, 47 and 43. Shoulder straps 51 are shown in a partial view. A pocket 95 extends down the length of back panel 19, and provides a pocket for inserting such items as a level 4 bullet proof carbon fiber panel, or corrugated plastic or card board panel may be used for additional the structural support, and to help hold the backpack 10 in a vertical position in the locker. Pocket 95 may also be used to carry books, notebooks, or a notebook computer.
  • FIG. 8 shows [0026] pack 10 mounted in a school locker 100. Back panel 19 is placed against the back of the inside of locker 100. Front panels 13 and 14 are opened against the inside sides of locker 100. Side panels 11 and 12 will be angled from the back of the locker and back panel 19 to the sides of the locker and front panels 13 and 14. This permits back pack 10 to stand in a vertical and opened position in locker 100. The side pockets or compartments 31 and 30 on the left side and pockets 27, 28 and 29 on the right side are accessible in this position. The compartments 38 and 36, for holding papers, notebooks and books are also accessible. Top panel 15 and strap 25 are shown in a raised position.
  • The material for [0027] backpack 10 may be cloth, plastic or other flexible materials. Backpack 10 has been described for use in carrying and storing school supplies, but is adaptable for other uses for carrying sport, picnic and other objects for camping.

Claims (18)

What is claimed:
1. A backpack for carrying objects and storing the objects in a open and accessible manner in a locker, comprising.
a back panel,
two side panels moveably attached to the back panel
two front panels, one each moveably attached to one of said side panels;
a plurality of storage compartments attached to and in said back and front panels; and
a top panel moveably attached to said back panel for securing said front panels when closed in front of said back panel.
2. The backpack according to claim 1, including a pair of shoulder straps attached to said back panel.
3. The backpack according to claim 1, including a waist strap attached to said back panel.
4. The backpack according to claim 1, including a plurality of storage pockets in said two side panels.
5. The backpack according to claim 1, including at least one storage pocket in said back panel.
6. The backpack according to claim 1, wherein said back panel has a pocket for inserting at least one of a level 4 bullet proof carbon fiber panel, corrugated plastic/card board panel for additional structural support, books, notebooks, and a notebook computer.
7. The backpack according to claim 6, wherein said support panel is selected from one of a level 4 bullet proof carbon fiber panel, a corrugated plastic panel and a cardboard panel.
8. The backpack according to claim 1, including at least one securing strap for holding said front panels in a closed position.
9. The backpack according to claim 1, wherein said top panel is held securely down by at least one hook and loop fastener.
10. A backpack for carrying objects and storing the objects in a open and accessible manner in a locker, comprising.
a back panel,
two side panels moveably attached to the back panel
two front panels, one each moveably attached to one of said side panels;
a plurality of storage compartments attached to and in said back and front panels;
a top panel moveably attached to said back panel for securing said front panels when closed in front of said back panel; and
a pair of should straps attached to said back panel.
11. The backpack according to claim 10, including a waist strap attached to said back panel.
12. The backpack according to claim 10, including a plurality of storage pockets in said two side panels.
13. The backpack according to claim 10, including at least one storage pocket in said back panel.
14. The backpack according to claim 10, wherein said back panel has a pocket for inserting at least one of a level 4 bullet proof carbon fiber panel, corrugated plastic/card board panel for additional structural support, books, notebooks, and a notebook computer.
15. The backpack according to claim 14, wherein said support panel is selected from one of a level 4 bullet proof carbon fiber panel, a corrugated plastic panel and a cardboard panel.
16. The backpack according to claim 10, including at least one securing strap for holding said front panels in a closed position.
17. The backpack according to claim 10, wherein said top panel is held securely down by at least one hook and loop fastener.
18. A backpack for carrying objects and storing the objects in a open and accessible manner in a locker, comprising.
a back panel,
two side panels moveably attached to the back panel
two front panels, one each moveably attached to one of said side panels;
a plurality of storage compartments attached to and in said back and front panels;
a top panel moveably attached to said back panel for securing said front panels when closed in front of said back panel; and
a pair of should straps and a waist strap attached to said back panel.
