- A
bassinet 20 constructed in accordance with the teachings of the invention is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The illustratedbassinet 20 includes afabric floor 22, twomesh side panels 24, and twomesh end panels 26. Thefabric floor 22,side panels 24, andend panels 26 define aninterior pocket 28 suitable for receiving an infant. - To provide support to the
fabric floor 22, thebassinet 20 is provided withfloor support bars 30. Thesefloor support bars 30 are held in place byfabric strips 32, which are sewn onto thefabric floor 22 to define tubes ortunnels 34. Thebassinet 20 also includes criss-crossing support straps 36, 38 (FIG. 2). The sewn-instraps 36 run from oneside mesh panel 24, along thefabric floor 22 and up the opposingside mesh panel 24. Similarly, the sewn-insupport straps 38 run from oneend mesh panel 26, along thefabric floor 22, and up the opposingend mesh panel 26. - The upper edges40 of the
end panels 26 containfabric extensions 42. Thefabric extensions 42 definesuspension support tubes 44 in whichsuspension support rods 46 are disposed (FIG. 2). The upper edges 40 of theend panels 26 also include shape stabilizers 48 (FIG. 1). These shape stabilizers 48 prevent themesh side panels 24 from collapsing into theinterior pocket 28. - The
upper edges 50 of theside panels 24 includeplastic clips 52. Theclips 52 are used to attach thebassinet 20 to theplay yard 54 as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. Theclips 52 have a C-shaped cross-section, and are sized to be easily attached to theupper rails 56 of theplay yard 54. - The
play yard 54 shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 includes twoend mesh panels 58, twoside mesh panels 60, and afabric floor 62 that together define an interior volume orpocket 64. Support for theend mesh panels 58 is provided by endupper rails 66 and endlower rails 68. Support for theside mesh panels 60 is provided by sideupper rails 56 and sidelower rails 70. Sideupper rails 56 run along theupper edges 72 of theside panels 60. Endupper rails 66 run along theupper edges 74 of theend mesh panels 58. Likewise, the sidelower rails 70 of theside panels 60 run along thelower edges 76 of theside panels 60. The endlower rails 68 of theend panels 58 run along thelower edges 78 of theend panels 58. When theplay yard 54 is erected, theupper rails lower rails corner rails 81 which are mounted onlegs 80. - The
corner rails 81, sideupper rails 56, and endupper rails 66 are joined atcorner cover plates 82. Thesecover plates 82 define channels 84 (FIGS. 5 and 6). Thechannels 84 are dimensioned to receive the opposite ends of thesuspension support rods 46 of thebassinet 20. - To utilize
bassinet 20, it is placed in theinterior volume 64 of the erected play yard 54 (FIGS. 3 and 4). As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, thebassinet 20 can be suspended in theinterior volume 64 of theplay yard 54 by coupling theclips 52 to theircorresponding side rails 56 and by placing thefabric extensions 42 over the endupper rail 66 of theend mesh panels 58 of theplay yard 54. Thefabric extensions 42 have a length such that they can each rest upon a respective one of theupper edges 74 of theplay yard 54 while theircorresponding support rod 46 is inserted into thechannels 84 of thecorner cover plates 82 of theplay yard 54. After thesupport rods 46 are properly disposed in thechannels 84 of thecorner cover plates 82, thebassinet 20 is suspended in theinterior volume 64 of theplay yard 54. Thesupport rods 46, as shown in FIG. 6, are then moved upward into a locked position inside thechannels 84. The weight of in thebassinet 20 has the effect of biasing therods 46 into thechannels 84 thereby ensuring thebassinet 20 remains in secure engagement with thechannels 84 of thecorner cover plates 82 of theplay yard 54. With thebassinet 20 securely suspended on all four sides, a removable paddedfloor 86 can be placed in thepocket 28 where it rests on top of thefabric floor 22 and the floor support bars 30. The removable paddedfloor 86 is provided to give the infant added comfort when he/she is inside thebassinet 20. - As shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, each
floor support bar 30 comprises at least two separable portions, namely, amale portion 88 and afemale portion 90. Themale portion 88 has a slightly taperedend 92 that is slidably engagable with theopen end 94 of thefemale portion 90. Themale portion 88 and thefemale portion 90 are secured together by aspring element 96 disposed within thefloor support bar 30. Oneend 98 of thespring element 96 is secured within themale portion 88 of thefloor support bar 30. Theopposite end 100 of thespring element 96 is secured within thefemale portion 90 of thefloor support bar 30. Theend 98 of thespring element 96 that is secured within themale portion 88 of thefloor support bar 30 is attached at anend 102 opposite thetapered end 92. Likewise, theend 100 of thespring element 96 that is secured within thefemale portion 90 of thefloor support bar 30 is attached at anend 104 opposite theopen end 94. Of course different securing positions and different lengths ofspring elements 96 can be utilized without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. - As shown in FIG. 7, the spring constant, length and securing positions of the
spring element 96 are selected such that the tension of thespring element 96 causes thetapered end 92 of themale portion 88 to matingly engage with theopen end 94 of thefemale portion 90 when the twoportions portions floor support bar 30 themale portion 88 and thefemale portion 90 must be separated from one another by stretching thespring element 96 such that thetapered end 92 of themale portion 88 is no longer in contact with theopen end 94 of the female portion 90 (FIG. 8). To maintain separation, themale portion 88 andfemale portion 90 must then be taken out of alignment, for example, by bringing theends - Preferably, the
fabric cover 33 is sufficiently tightly fit to the twoportions floor support bar 30 so that it functions to guide the twoportions portions bar 30 are aligned, they automatically connect under the influence of thespring element 96 may be employed without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. - The
spring element 96 can be implemented in many ways without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. For example, thespring element 96 can be implemented by an elastic cord as shown in the drawings. Preferably, however, thespring element 96 is implemented by a coil spring. Regardless of how thespring element 96 is implemented, it preferably functions to prevent the male andfemale portions portions tubes 30 together into the interlocked position when they are aligned. - Preferably the
support rods 30 are permanently fixed to thefabric floor 22. This permanent attachment can be achieved in many ways without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. In the illustratedbassinet 20, thesupport rods 30 are fixed to the floor by partially entrapping it with the fabric strips which, together with thefloor 22 itself, definetunnels 34. In the preferred implementation, the securement is further assisted by a screw connecting one end ofrod 30 to the associatedfabric strip 32. A similar approach is taken with respect to theextensions 42 andsupport rods 46. Specifically, one or more screws are utilized to permanently secure thesupport rods 46 within thesuspension support tubes 44. This permanent securement of therods 46 to theextensions 42 and thesupport rods 30 to thefloor 22 is advantageous in the illustratedbassinet 20 because it eliminates the possibility of lost parts by ensuring all of the structural components (except, perhaps, the padded floor 86) remain connected whether the bassinet is erected or collapsed for storage. - As shown in FIGS. 1 and 9, each
support bar 30 is preferably secured to thefloor 22 by three fabric strips, namely, twoend strips 32 and amiddle strip 33. A space or separation is preferably provided between eachend strip 32 and themiddle strip 33. As a result, a section of eachportion support bar 30 is exposed when the padded floor is removed to enable a user to grasp thoseportions support bar 30. - As shown in FIG. 1, the
middle strip 33 is located over the joint between theseparable portions support bar 30. Thus, themiddle strip 33 functions as a joint cover to largely eliminate the pinch point formed by the joint. It also functions to align theportions support bar 30 and to prevent thoseportions - FIG. 9 illustrates the
bassinet 20 in the process of being folded for portable storage. Themale portions 88 of the floor support bars 30 are disengaged from the correspondingfemale portions 90. The ends 102, 104 of the floor support bars 30 are then brought into proximity with one another. Preferably, thebassinet 20 and the floor support bars 30 are constructed such that the floor support bars 30 can be disengaged while they are still disposed within thefabric tunnels 34. In the illustratedbassinet 20, the fabric nature of thewalls floor 22, and the length of the support bars enable such disengagement. Persons of ordinary skill in the art will, however, readily appreciate that thebassinet 20 can be constructed to permit and/or require removal of thefloor support bar 30 from thetunnels 34 of thefloor 22 for separating the male andfemale components floor tunnels 34 to reduce the likelihood of lost parts and/or misuse of the bassinet. - From the foregoing, persons of ordinary skill in the art will readily appreciate that the illustrated bassinet advantageously includes permanently affixed support bars30. To permit enhanced collapsibility of the
bassinet 20, the support bars 30 include at least partially separable sections or segments. These segments are adapted to automatically align and engage one another to form the rigid support bars 30 when thebassinet 20 is put on a play yard and/or thefloor 22 is flattened. - Persons of ordinary skill in the art will further appreciate that, when assembled, except for the padded floor, all of the structural members (e.g., the
support tubes 30, 46) of thebassinet 20 are inaccessible to an infant disposed in thebassinet 20. - Although certain floor supports and bassinets constructed in accordance with the teachings of the invention have been described herein, the scope of coverage of this patent is not limited thereto. On the contrary, this patent covers all embodiments of the teachings of the invention fairly falling within the scope of the appended claims either literally or under the doctrine of equivalents.
