Description

    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
  • This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application Serial No. 60/249,499 filed Nov. 17, 2000.[0001]
  • TECHNICAL FIELD
  • This invention relates to vehicle seats having an adjustable seat cushion and back rest with a central seating surface and a central seat back that may be shifted to modify the support level of the central seating surface and central seat back relative to adjacent side support portions of the seat cushion and back rest. [0002]
  • BACKGROUND ART
  • Seats for vehicles were traditionally formed by interconnected spring support elements covered by padding material and upholstery. Vehicle seat construction has been simplified by utilizing structural foam supported by frames or rigid panels that are covered by fabric, vinyl or leather upholstery. [0003]
  • Vehicle seats may be provided with various adjustment mechanisms to move the seats forward or rearward by means of manual or power seat position adjustment mechanisms. Vehicle seats may also be provided with mechanisms that permit the seats to be raised and lowered. Another common adjustment mechanism is a tilt adjustment that controls the angle of orientation of the seat back relative to the seat cushion. Some seats also offer adjustable bolster sections that provide limited adjustability of the seat for supporting the small of the back of an occupant. [0004]
  • There is a need for a vehicle seat that has a greater degree of adjustability allowing for adjustment of the seat geometry for sport driving or normal driving. In particular, there is a need to be able to adjust the central portions of the seating surface and the seat back relative to the sides of the seat that are contoured to provide lateral support for a person seated on the seat. Generally, the relationship of the central portions of the seating surface and back rest are fixed relative to adjacent side support portions that are raised relative to the central portion and diverge from the central portions. Sport driving seats are more concave and have central portions that are flanked by more pronounced side supports that wrap around the seat occupant providing substantial resistance to lateral forces. Seats designed for normal driving are less concave and provide more space between lateral sides that permit the occupant of the seat to have a greater range of motion because they are not confined by the side supports. [0005]
  • The above problems and disadvantages are addressed by the present invention that answers the long-felt need of providing a vehicle seat that is adjustable to be well suited to sport driving and normal driving situations as summarized below. [0006]
  • DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION
  • According to one aspect of the present invention, a vehicle seat is provided that defines an adjustable depth occupant accommodating area. The vehicle seat comprises a seat cushion portion and a back rest portion. A central portion of a back rest pad forms a part of the occupant accommodating area that is moveable and includes actuators for changing the position of at least one section of the central portion of the back rest pad. A pair of side support portions form a part of the occupant accommodating area that are adjacent the central portion and diverge laterally outwardly are progressively raised as they diverge from the central portion. The actuators are provided to change the position of the central portion of the back rest pad and provide a broader occupant accommodating area between the side supports for normal driving. Conversely, the actuators may change the position of the central portion of the back rest pad to provide a narrower occupant accommodating area between the side supports for sport driving. [0007]
  • According to another aspect of the present invention, a central portion of a seat cushion pad that forms a part of the occupant accommodating area may also have actuators for changing the position of at least one section of the central portion of the seat cushion pad. A pair of side support portions form a part of the occupant accommodating area that are adjacent to the central portion and diverge laterally outwardly and are progressively raised as they diverge from the central portion. Actuators are used to change the position of the central portion to provide a broader occupant accommodating area between side supports for normal driving. Conversely, for sport driving, the position of the central portion may be changed to provide a narrow occupant accommodating area between the side support portions. [0008]
  • The invention may include an adjustment mechanism for both the central portion of the seat cushion pad and the central portion of the back rest pad. [0009]
  • According to the invention, the actuators may take various forms. Examples of some actuators include eccentric rollers, broad surface area pneumatic bladders, pivoting linkages operated by linear actuators such as pneumatic cylinders, wedges slidable behind the central portion of the seat back or seat cushion, or localized pneumatically expandable elements. [0010]
  • According to the invention, the actuators may be positioned in various locations. In the back rest portion, the actuators may be located in the upper part of the central portion, lower part of the central portion, or in both the upper and lower parts of the central portion. In the seat cushion, the actuators may be located in the front part of the central portion, back part of the central portion, or in both the front and back parts of the central portion. [0011]
  • According to yet another feature of the invention, the actuators may be manually adjusted by a switch. The actuators may also be automatically adjusted in response to sensors in the seat for detecting lateral acceleration forces, or automatically adjusted depending upon the pressure applied to the seat by an occupant as sensed by sensors in the seat, or automatically adjusted according to a pre-set memory position set by the occupant. [0012]
  • According to another aspect of the invention, a headrest may be provided above the central portion of the back rest portion with the central portion being movable relative to the headrest. Alternatively, an adjustable headrest may be provided to permit adjustment of the headrest to correspond to adjustments in the position of the central portion of the back rest pad. [0013]
  • These and other aspects and advantages of the present invention will be better understood in view of the attached drawings and following detailed description of the illustrated modes of practicing the invention.[0014]
