Description
J. NEWMAN.
Implement for Filling Cartridge-Shells ,No. 200,149. Patented Feb-12,1878.
JZBSZ: I 690922501":
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES NEWMAN, OF AMENIA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENTS FOR'FILLING CARTRIDGE-SHELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,149, dated February 12, 1878; application filed January 21, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES NEWMAN, of the town of Amenia, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Filling Cartridge-Shells, of which the following, in connection with the drawings herein referred to, and which form a part of this specification, is suficient to give a full and clear understanding.
In the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my device in position for filling the charger.- Fig. 2 is a similar view with the funnel inserted in the mouth of a shell, and the charger in position for pouring the powder into the funnel.
1n the use of the ordinary charger there is great liability of spilling a portion of the powder in the act of pouring the same into the shell, which is a serious detriment in longrange shooting, where great accuracy in the measurement of the charge is required in order to get good results; and to this end I provide a funnel, which I attach to the ordinary charger by ahinge, in such a manner that the charger may be turned into such position relatively to the funnel as to pour its contents into'the funnel.
The tube or outlet of the funnel is of such size as to fit within the mouth of the shell, and when placed in such position all liability of spilling the powder is obviated.
The operation of the device is as follows: The charger is filled with powder from a flask, or with a spoon, or in any suitable manner, and any surplus powder is carefully stroked ofi. The funnel is then inserted into the mouth of the shell, and the charger is turned into the position shown in Fig. 2, when the powder is poured into the funnel, and is thereby conducted into the shell without liability of waste.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, A indicates the funnel; B, the charger; C, the handle or support of the charger, and D the shell to be filled.
The handle G is provided with a spring loop or ring, 0, of a size to receive and hold the charger during its manipulation. The funnel A is connected to the loop 0 by a hinge, d, so as to allow the movement of the funnel relatively to the charger, as shown in the drawing, for the purpose already set forth.
I am aware that the charger, the handle provided with the spring-loop, and the funnel, separately, are not new but'I am not aware that they have ever been combined in the manner shown; and
I therefore claim- 1. The combination of a funnel, a charger, and a supporting-handle, connected together in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the handle G, provided with loop 0, and the funnel A, when the parts are connected by a hinge which allows them to be turned relatively to each other, as shown and described.
JAS. NEWMAN.
