Description

T. E. BROWN SHARPENING DEVICE Jan. 12, 1937.
Jeodorefifirowza 4 9 Filed Nov. 8, 1935 Patented Jan. 12, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,067,594 SHARPENING DEVICE I Theodore E. Brown, Berwyn, 111.
Application November 8, 1935, Serial No. 48,830
' SClaims. (o1.51--1s7) This invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices for sharpening knives, razors, scissors, and other like cutting tools, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character in which the sharpening elements may be readily removed.
A further object is to provide an improved, simple, and efiicient device of this character embodying a body to which the sharpening elements are secured for ready detachment, without the use of nails, screws, or the like, and which body is provided with handles at the ends thereof, thereby adapting the device for ready use by either right or left handed persons, the body being provided with sharpening elements on each side thereof, so that either side of the sharpener may be employed.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional View taken on line 2--2, Figure 1, on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 3-3, Figure 1, on an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a. detail perspective View of one of the fastening clips.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral l0 designates generally a body portion which may be constructed of any suitable material, but preferably wood, and is comparatively thin with relation to its width.
The body may be of any desired length and the extremities thereof are preferably shaped to form handles II, either one or both of which may be provided with an opening l2 by means of which the device may be suspended from the wall.
Within the body portion and opening through opposite faces thereof, are grooves [3 which extend transversely thereacross and open through opposite faces thereof. Both ends of each of 50 these grooves are preferably open and the grooves may be arranged at any suitable point with respect to the length of the body, but they are preferably disposed adjacent the lower ends of the handles l l.
The sharpening elements M which are preferably in the form of flexible strips, may be formed of any suitable material, such as emery paper, sandpaper, or the like, and one of these strips is arranged adjacent each of the opposite faces of the body Ill. The strips are preferably of a, size and configuration to conform to the contour of the body l0 and are of such a length that the ends thereof will project over the respective grooves I 3, and a clip I6, preferably of a substantially U shaped formation having spring jaws I1, is provided for securing the sharpening strips 64 in position. The clips are placed in position by engaging over one of the edges of the body so as to force the ends I5 of the strips 14 into the grooves I3. The grooves l3 being open at both ends, renders it possible to place the clip in position from either side of the body, and when in position, the end I 5 of the strip will be disposed between the jaws ll of the clip and the bottoms of the respective grooves IS.
The grooves I3 are preferably of a width slightly greater than the width of the jaws I'l so as not to injure or cut the strips M by the placing of the jaws ll of the clip, in position.
The jaws I! are also preferably of a length slightly less than the width of the body l0, so that the extremities of the jaws I! will not project beyond the edge of the body Ill.
The grooves 13 are also of such a depth and the jaws ll of the spring clip l6 are of such a thickness that when the clips are in position, the upper or outer surfaces of the clips will be substantially flush with the adjacent portions of the body.
With this improved construction it will be manifest that the device may be held by either handle II and either surface may be employed for the sharpening operation,
By the provision of the two handles H, it is' also manifest that when one edge of the sharpening elements [4 becomes worn, the device may be turned around and held by the other handle II to position the other edge to be used in the sharpening operation.
By the detachability of the clips I6 and the sharpening strips M, it will be manifest that the latter may be readily renewed when worn.
While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is:--
1. A sharpening device of the character described embodying an elongated substantially rectangular body comparatively thin with relation to its width, a handle at the end of said body, there being a groove of substantial width opening through the face of the body adjacent said handle and extending transverse to the longitudinal dimension of said body, a flexible strip ofashar-peningi material contacting; the face of the :bodyg: with a itsg'end ,extendingg-voverte said groove, a freely removable substantially U-shaped therebetween and the bottoms of the grooves, the arms resilient and portions thereof being normally spaced from each other for a distance less than the thickness of the body between the bottoms of the grooves whereby the stress created in the arms when the latter are seated in the grooves will force the flexible strips against the bottoms of the grooves.
3. A sharpening device of the character de- ..scr ibed'embodying an elongated body comparaatively narrow; with respectto its; length; and provided in opposite faces with open grooves of subspring clip, the arms of said clip being of a sub-;- c stantial width extending thereacross transverse stantial width, one of the arms of the clip seatedin and substantially filling said groove and -ex tending across said face of the body witl1- the outer face of said arm substantially'fiiish "with the face of said body, thersaid -flexible strip being disposed between said clip and therhottom of the groove, the arms of the clip: urged trans versly ofithevlongitudinalidimension:ofcsaid body, and.;the:connecting-:portion Of the clip between said arms "contacting-a longitudinal edge-:ofsaid strip 1and:.also=:of thezsaid body.
