Description
June 30, 1936. w. c. HIE RING BAG FRAME Filed May 11, 1954 ATTORNEY Patented June 30, 1936 EJNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE BAG FRAME Application May 11, 1934, Serial No. 725,135
2 Claims.
This invention relates to frames for use in ladies hand bags and the like.
There has been manufactured a considerable number of hand bag frames having upwardly opening channeled frame members, the bag covering material being inserted between the walls of the channels of the frame members. The frame members are generally U-shaped and provided with mitered corners to facilitate bending of the channeled strip into the U-shape. Frequently in the manufacture of the frame members, the channel strip breaks at the mitered corners and the frame has to be rejected. Such frames are also liable to be broken at the mitered corners during the process of attaching bag covering material thereto. The outwardly opening channeled frame members have also been objectionable in that the inner walls of adjacent :frame members present sharp edges upon which 'the hands are liable to be cut during the attaching of bag covering material to the frame, or when the bag is being used.
It is an object of this invention, to provide a .bag frame having outwardly opening channelled frame members, the inner walls of each of said frame members having their edges provided with a bead which strengthens the frame member and prevents breakage at the mitered corners, and also eliminates sharp edges on the frame mem- 30 bers.
A further object is to provide a bag frame having outwardly opening channelled frame members, the inner walls of which are provided with a peripheral bead to which can be conveniently attached means for fastening the frame members to each other, said beads also enhancing the ornamental appearance of the frame members.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag provided with a frame embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view partly in section, showing details of the frame and the manner in which bag covering material is attached thereto,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a hand bag frame embodying the invention, and also showing the manner in which fastening elements can be attached to the frame members, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view, partly in section, showing the inner walls of the bag frame members provided with a closed bead, as distinguished from the open bead shown in the other views.
Referring to the drawing, my improved hand 5 bag frame is shown to comprise two hingedly connected outwardly opening channelled frame members I and 2, each member being preferably U-shaped and having corners mitered at 3 to enable the formation of right angular corners 10 which are substantially undistorted. The inner wall of each frame member has its free edge provided with a peripheral bead 5 which opens downwardly into the channel, so that the adjacent surfaces of the inner walls of the frame 5 members are substantially smooth. The bead is considerably strengthens the inner walls and prevents breakage at the mitered corners during the formation of the frame members, or during the attaching of hand bag covering material to 20 the frame member.
Hand bag covering material is attached to the frame members by inserting the material in the channels as shown in Fig. 2, after which the outer walls 6 of the frame members are crimped inwardly towards the inner walls 4 to securely clamp the material in place.
The bead 5 presents a surface to which fastening means can be conveniently and readily attached.
In Fig. 2 the beads are perforated at I to receive rivets of a fastening device 9.
In Fig. 3 is shown another method of attaching a fastening device or ornamental plate to the frame members. According to this modification the fastening device is attached to a plate II] which has a portion thereof bent to form a channel I I. The plate Ill is inserted in a frame member so that the walls 12 of channel H abuts the bead 5, and the wall [3 engages the outer wall 6 of the frame member. The plate l0 may be secured to the frame member by soldering, spot welding or other suitable means.
In Fig. 1 there is shown attache-d to a bead 5 a latching device 15 which can be convenient- 4,5 ly snapped over the head 5 of the adjacent frame member to hold the two frame members together.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a bag frame in which the walls of the frame members are considerably increased in strength and provided with means to improve the appearance of the frame members, at the same time enabling fastening devices or or namental means to be conveniently attached to the frame members.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously embodimentsmay be constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope herein considered and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a hand bag frame, a pair of outwardly opening channelled frame members hingedl'y connected, beads formed about the edges of adjacent inner walls of said frame members, and a fastening element secured'to'orie o f'said frame members, said element having apl-ate bent to form a channel abutting the bead to prevent upward movement of the element, said plate engaging the outer wall of said frame member to prevent lateral movement of the element.
2. In a hand bag, a frame comprising a pair of outwardly opening channelled frame members hingedly connected, the inner wall of said frame members extending above the outer wall thereof and having the upper edge bent towards said outer wall to form a bead, bag covering material positioned in 'said frame member below said bead, and clamped securely to said frame member by the outer wall thereof, and fastening elemerits positioned in said channeled frame members and having portions abutting said beads and 'ioute'r'walls to prevent upward and lateral move- "merit thereof.
