Description

Aug. 15, 1933. WILLIAMS 1,922,998
COMBINED PAN SCRAPER, SHOVEL, AND BROOM Filed March 9. 1952 ATTO R N EY Patented Aug. 15, 1933 UNITED STATES COMBINED PAN SCRAPER, SHOVEL, AND BROOM Jacob Williams, Flushing, N. Y.
Application March 9, 1932. Serial No. 597,769
2 Claims. (01. 15-111) My present invention has reference to a combination tool, and my object is the provision of a combined shovel, broom and scraper of such construction and arrangement that the scraper and brush may be used simultaneously, one in advance of the other, or which may be used one indepenent of the other and further wherein neither the scraper nor the brush will interfere with the operation of the shovel.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a similar view with parts in section showing the device inverted with respect to' the disclosure in Figure 1 and likewise showing the device employed as a combined scraper and brush.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the improvement.
The shovel member 1 of my improved combination tool has its bottom, at its outer end, sharpened to provide a scraper 2. The rear end of the shovel is extended at an angle with respect to the bottom thereof to afford a back 3 and this back is reinforced by inner and outer angle plates 5 and 6, respectively, the said plates being riveted or otherwise secured to the rear portion of the bottom and the back 3 ofthe shovel. The shovel is also provided with angle sides '7 and the back thereof is formed with a round opening.
The inner angle plate 6 is bent to afford a U- shaped portion 8 that receives therein the upper or outer edge of the back 3 and from thence the said plate is continued for a determined distance, and this portion 9 is arched in cross section. The inner wall of the arched portion 9 registers with a round opening in the rear or back of the shovel and the outer reinforcing plate 5 is also formed with an extension 10 which is arched in cross section and which registers with the opening 11 in the back 3. There is passed through the sockets afforded by the members 9 and 10 and likewise through the opening 11 a handle 12 secured in the socket members 9 and 10 by rivets or like elements 13 and the inner end of the handle is coneshaped, as at 15, and is designed to be received in a similar-shaped opening in the head 16 that carries the brush bristles 17.
The sides 7, at the rear of the shovel are formed with substantially rectangular extensions 18 that have passed through the outer corners thereof bolt members 19 that enter the brush head 16.
The brush is thus firmly supported on the shovel at the rear thereof, and the ends of the brush head are in contact with the sides of the shovel and one of the corners of the said head is in contact with the rear or back of the shovel. It is to be noted that the brush and its head are of substantially rectangular formation and as the brush is of a length equaling the distance between the sides of the shovel it is comparatively long. Also the brush is comparatively wide.
The tool is employed as a shovel as disclosed by Figure 1 in the drawing. The tool is employed as a combined scraper and brush when in the position disclosed by Figure 2. When the device is thus arranged it will be noted that the outer or active face of the brush is in direct contact with the floor surface and likewise the scraper end 2 of the shovel l is in similar contact with the floor surface. Because of the size of the brush the same serves as a support for the shovel and either a light or a heavier scraping and brushing action is imparted by the pressure of the operator on the handle 12 in manipulating the device, but in either of such actions the brush follows the depth in the floor made by the sharpened edge 2 of the shovel and will be in the same plane as that of the said edge 2. Obviously by tilting or canting the tool the same may be employed singly as a scraper or in brushing operations and it is thought that when the foregoing description has been read in connection with the drawings the simplicity and advantages of the improvement will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
Having described the invention, I claim:-
1. A combination tool comprising a shovel having its outer edge sharpened and provided with angle sides and a back, a substantially rectangular brush having a head fixed between the sides, means onthe shovel to reinforce the back thereof and engaged by one of the corners of the head, a handle carried by the back and entering the head of the brush, and the active face of the bristles of the brush being of a length to contact with a floor surface in a plane with the sharpened edge of the shovel when the device is inverted to provide a combined scraper and brush.
2. A combination tool for the purpose set forth, comprising a shovel having a fiat bottom whose outer edge is sharpened, a right angular back, sides having their rear portions of rectangular formation and their upper edges, from their said rear portions inclined toward the sharpened edge of the body, inner and outer reinforcing plates secured to the back and to the bottom of the shovel, said plates having rearwardly extending portions affording a socket, a substantially rectangular brush having its head received between and secured to the rectangular ends of the sides, and a handle member received through and secured to the socket and entering the head of the brush.
