1 Claim.
This invention relates to a supercharger for carburetors of internal combustion engines, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby air from the fan of the motor 5 and forward motion of the vehicle is introduced into the air inlet of the carburetor which acts to greatly increase vaporization of the fuel and makes for more complete combustion and thus increases the efficiency of the engine.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of portions of an internal combustion motor of a motor vehicle showing the invention in use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through a portion of the invention and showing the same attached to the inlet of a carburetor.
In this drawing, the letter A indicates an internal combustion motor, the carburetor of which is shown at B and the fan at F. In carrying out my invention, I provide a tubular member 1 of considerable length and having its rear end of goose-neck shape with its extremity connected to the air inlet 2 of the carburetor. The forward portions of the member 1 curve upwardly with its front end gradually increasing in area to form the enlarged spout-like portion 3 which is located in rear of the fan F so that air from the fan will enter the member, and thus pass into the carburetor and the air produced by the forward motion of the vehicle will also enter the member. The front end of the member is covered by a screen 4 to prevent dirt and the like entering the member and the member may be supported from the top of. the motor by means of a bracket 5.
The lower part of the member 1 is formed with an inverted dome-shaped depending part 6 having a small vent 7 in its lower end so that any water entering the member will pass into the part 6 and discharge through the vent 7. A spherical valve 8, preferably formed of cork is located in themember 6, and normally closes the vent, so that no air can pass therefrom, but if any water collects in the part 6, the valve will raise so that such water can escape.
This device will deliver air under pressure to the air inlet of the carburetor and utilizes the regular fan of the motor and the forward motion of the vehicle to produce the pressure. The device will greatly increase vaporization of the fuel and increases combustion so that the engine speed is increased, the consumption of fuel reduced, and the motor run smoother at all speeds, than it will when the device is not in use.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:-
In combination with an internal combustion motor of a motor vehicle including a carburetor and fan, a tubular member having its rear end curving upwardly and forwardly with its extremity connected with the air intake of the carburetor, the front portion of the member curving upwardly with its front portion enlarged and opening out adjacent the rear part of the fan, a screen covering the said front end, the remaining part of the tubular member being bowed downwardly and having a depending portion at its lowest point, of substantially inverted dome shape and terminating in a depending discharge nipple, said depending portion forming a water collecting chamber and a buoyant valve in said depending part.
