Description

FLY SHEET FOR LOOSE LEAF RING BOOKS Filed April 30, 1931 KKZETQ 045 M ETIE=EL fnvernar' Patented May 30, 1933 UNITED STATES COMPANY, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS FLY SHEET non LOOSE LEAF RING BOOKS Application filed April 30,
My invention relates to loose leaf books of the ring type, and has for its object to so locate the ring openings in the fly sheets that there can not only be no cramping of the sheets against the rings when the book is closed, but there can be no overlapping of the inner edges of such sheets.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a fly sheet having circular ring openings Figure 2 is an end elevation'of a loose leaf ring book showing the position a fly sheet assumes when closing such book that is equipped with fly sheets like those shown at Figure 1- Figure 3 shows a fly sheet having elongated openings that overcome the defect shown at Figure 2 Figure 4 is an end view of a loose leaf ring book showing how the fly sheets like that shown at Figure 3 become overlapped at their inner edges so as to interfere with the closing of the book- Figure 5 shows a fly sheet having openings that overcome the defect noted at Figure l- Figure 6 is a top view of a portion of a loose leaf ring book with the rings sectioned and having fly sheets like that shown at Figure 7, and Figures 7 and 8 show modified forms of my fly sheet.
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
This invention relates solely to the fly sheets which are made of fiber or other stifl material and are placed on the two outer sides of the filler of a loose leaf ring book to facilitate the raising of the filler sheets when the book is closed.
Referring to Figure 1, the fly sheet 1 has circular openings 2, and when the book is closed said fly sheet will cramp against the rings 0, as shown at Figure 2.
When a loose leaf ring book has fly sheets like that designated by the numeral 3 with elongated alined openings 4, the defect noted at Figure 2 will be overcome, but, during the manipulation of the book such sheets frequently become overlapped at their inner edges, thus interfering with the ready closing of the book, as clearly shown at Figure 4.
1931; Serial No. 534,111.
My invention overcomes the disadvantages above referred to by providing a fly sheet 5- PATENT OFFICE:
JOHN SCHADE, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSTGNOR T0 NATIOlV-AL BLANK BOOK A Referring to Figures 6 and 7, the openings 6 contact only with the inner surfaces of the rings and the openings 7 contact with the outer surfaces of the rings.
The same result wouldfollow if the openings were formed as is shown at Figures 5 and 8, and it will be noted that, referring to Figures 5, 7 and 8, the distance between a line a drawn along the inner ends of one set of openings and a line Z) drawn along the outer ends of the other set of openings, is approximately the thickness of the wire from which the rings are made.
It will be evident that the arrangement of these openings may vary so long as one set of openings has contact only with the outer surfaces of the rings and the other set has contact only with the inner surfaces of said rings. 1
What is claimed is:
1. A fly sheet for loose leaf ring books, having two sets of elongated openings near the inner edge thereof, the openings of one set being parallel to those of the other set the distance between a line drawn tangent to the inner ends of one set of openings and a line drawn tangent to the outer ends of the other set of openings approximating the thickness of the wire used in the ring.
2. A fly sheet for loose leaf ring books, having two sets of parallel elongated openings formed at its inner edge, theopenings of the two sets combined being in staggered relation to each other, the distance between a line drawn tangent to the inner end portions of one set and a line drawn tangent to the outer end portions of the other set being approximately equal to the diameter of the rings.
3. In a loose leaf ring book comprising separable rings adapted tobe opened and closed whereby fly sheets may be removed from or placed on said rings, the hereindescribed improvement comprising 'a fly sheet for engagvot ing said rings, said fly sheet having two sets of elongated openings that are parallel to each other and to the rings, one set of said openings being punched nearer the inner edge of the sheet than the other set, the edges of one set of said openings contacting only with the outer surface of the rings which they engage while the edges of the other set of openings contact only with the inner surface of the rings which they engage.
4c. In a loose leaf ring book comprising separable rings adapted to be opened and closed whereby fly sheets may be removed from or placed on said rings, the hereindescribed improvement comprising a fly sheet for engaging said rings, said fly sheet having two sets of openings punched therein, the distance from the inner edge of the sheet to the inner edge of one set of openings being greater than the distance between the inner edge of said sheet and the inner edge of the other set of openings, whereby in operation one, set of openings contacts only with the inner surfaces of the rings they engage while the outer edge of the other set of openings contacts only with the outer surfaces of the rings they engage. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
JOHN SCHADE.
