invINaBARKA v, or PHILADELPHIA, riinnsz nvnlvm NHfPLE Application filed August 19', 1931; sem No. 5 5 8; 1 2 5.
This invention relates to nipples used on nursing bottles and more particularly to a nipple having a stopper portion whichfits in the interior of the bottle and a skirt portion which fits around the exterior of the bottle neck.-
In nipples of this character, as at present made when being removed or applied, the
skirt portion is first bent upwardly andthen down again to hug the bottle. neck. After being used for a" considerable time it has been found that a tear develops along a circular line where the sharp bending takes place. To overcome this difficulty 1 propose to form the nipple so' thatinstead of] bending sharply at one place the bending? will be through a substantial wide are so that no particular point will have to take up all the wearing stress. it
It- 's therefore the object of the invention to provide a nipple which will not breakor tear under constant bending of the wall whentaken on and off the bottle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a series of thinned circular sections in the wall so that the bending of the wall will not be limited to one particular point but to a large area and thus allow the wall to describe a comparatively wide circle when the nipple is taken off or being put on the bottle.
My 1nventi0n consists in certain other.
novel features and combinations such as will be more fully described hereinafter and par- 7 ticularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing' t Figure 1 is a cross section of a nipple shown attached to the nursing bottle.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the skirt portion of the nipple turned up.
Referring now to the drawing in detail;
numeral 1 designates the nipple comprising arelatively thin upper portion 2 and a thick stopper portion 3 which fits in the neck ofv the bottle B. Formed in the stopper portionis a circular channel 4. The outside wall 5 of this channel is provided with a series of parallel grooves=6 forming comparatively thin wall sections 7 between the bottom of each groove and the outside surface of the nipple. The purpose of this arrangement is to allow the 'outside wall 5of; the channel to bend through a. relative wide curve as shown in Figure 2 'when'theski-rt portion, 8 of the nipple is turned upiand ing up all thebending movements. Y
thus relieve any particular point fromtaki- I It will thus be see that a ip e v pr on a simple and novel method of the life of a nipple without adding to the cost of, the article. The only additional Qcosti to make. this type nipple is to'prepare ,thef mold. for this purpose.-;;Afterqthe mold is made the nipple can beinadewithout great; erco'st than the nipples now on the market.
There has thus been provided a imple and efficient" device of the fi d de b and for {the purpose specified. v I
' It isobvious'that many minor changesv maybe made in theforrn "and construction of the invention fwithout departing from the 3 material principles involved. I, do. not
therefore desire to confine the invention to the exact formfherein shown and described but 1 I desire to include all" forms which pro erly come within the scope claimed. avinghus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is-' "In a nipple of the class described, the combinjation ofa body member havingarelatively thin upperportion and a her, a circular chamber between said stopper member, and-saidthin outer wall member; the inside face of said thin outer wall member forming the chamber provided with a plurality of parallel corrugations horia zontallydisposed dividing said .wall mem her into thin and'thick wall sections, eachfl-"l' of said corrugated wall sections adapted f to, take up aportion of the bendingstrainl when thenipple is put on and takenlofi" a 1 bottle; the lower end ofsaid thin outer wall member being sharply restrictedforming a shoulder portion which is adapted to against the undersideof a bottle flange. In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature. I IRVING BARKAN.
